Why Orpingtons?

I like big fluffy chickens! You are very right in that some people like one breed and others another. I for one can't see what people see in showgirls and naked necks, but there are people who wouldn't have anything else. I got my first orps because as I said I like big fluffly chickens and I wanted more cold weather layers.

Look at my avatar. HE was supposed to be a big ole fluffy-butted SHE.

I do have my black australorp pullet that is getting fluffy-butted though.

I made my decision to buy an orp after doing a lot of research on hens and seeing how popular orps are based on their temperament and egg laying abilities.

Plain! Are you kidding?!?! They're gorgeous, fluffy, friendly chickens! What more could you want?!?! Just look as MissPrissy's and Speckledhens Orps. Nothing but gorgeous!!! I have 13 Blue Orp. eggs in my bator due to hatch Friday and can't wait!

They are gentle and lay big eggs and are soft and fluffy

And they dont tend to make a lot of noise like some of the other breeds

THEN, there are the threads of asking for a recomendation for a beginner chicken and Orpingtons would fit the bill for no feathers on feet and easy care(gentle)

Just remember, Joe, you said you wanted that rooster when I have a bunch of his sons to sell/give away, LOL. He produces some very nice ones with these two ladies of his. Gee, how much do you think the Suedenator is worth? If I sold him by the pound, it'd be alot, LOL. These continue to fill out and mature till they're almost two years old, and he's about a year and a half now. I believe he weighs about 12 lb. or so.

Its a sad fact of life that "plain old boring" is usually what works. WE love lurid, vivid and extravagant, but that is often the last thing we need.
Take boots vs. high heels, for example - you can wear boots anywhere, but try high heels out in the pasture or when chopping wood.
High-heels: zippy! fashionable! Near useless.
Boots: plain old boring. Infinitely useful

Orpingtons in all their various forms are the same way, the "boots" of the chicken world. No, they dont have feathers sticking out at all angles, naked necks or anything even remotely frilly or fashionable about them. NO, they aren't demanding, flighty or difficult to handle.

But they work. They are dependalble and can do anything you want of a chicken, from laying prodigious quantities of eggs to making decent table fair. They can grow quite large and will happily forage under almost any practical circumstances. They require little special treatment or worry. Give 'em the basics and leave 'em alone - they'll reward you.

Sure, "boring" isn't fun to look at or talk about, but those in the know will know, you know?
