My Coop
My Coop
I just have to get this off me.

Every time my chickens do something "bad" (aka climb on the hay in the barn, get into the yard, crawl under the gates) my family yells at me. LIKE IT'S MY FAULT??? LIKE I MAKE THEM DO IT??? I CAN'T HELP IT!!!!!! And yet if I say so, they get madder at me. WHY DO THEY DO IT??!!! SHOULD I GET FURIOUS AT MY SISTER WHEN HER COW GETS IN THE POTATO PATCH?? She must be at fault. She must have made the cow do it. Who else??

Sorry everyone. I don't know if there's anyone out there who understands... but I took the chance. I hate it.

Time to confine them to a coop and run. That way they are limited where they will go. They can not yell at you for your chickens' natural instinct to go out and forage.

You may not be "making" them do it but when we own animals, their behavior becomes our responsibility. It is my responsibility to keep my dog restrained on my property or on a leash when off property. It is my responsibility to make sure my horse stays in his pasture. And it is my responsibility to make sure my chickens aren't going places or doing things they shouldn't. You may not be making your chickens do things that are unwelcome, but by letting them roam and not containing them, you are allowing them to, and since this is clearly causing friction, it might be time to do something about it.

Well see.. We don't want them in a run. We want them to be free-ranged, so they're (supposed to be) out in the field with the cow, acting as manure spreaders. But they like to hang out in the barn a lot. And I can't help it.
