Thursday morning, 2 of my dogs dug out from under my fence. Actually, my 9 month old husky is probably the culprit, my 2 yr old Border collie never has. Both of them were gone, who knows how long before I realized it, possibly up to a half hour.

Neither dog is vicious, both are very friendly, loving, sweet girls. After hours of tramping through literally over 100 acres of woods, our 9 month old husky came home. There's been no sign of our Border Collie, Fiona.

Fiona is MY dog, she's helped me through some real tragedies that I've been through over the last 2 1/2 years. I know some are probably rolling their eyes but I've told this dog things that I felt I couldn't tell anyone else.

I've been out every day, in the pouring rain, my husband dragging me in at night fall because we have bear, coyote, and cougar here. But at the break of dawn, I'm right back out trying to find my girl. We've been to every neighbor's house within 5 miles. We've called the humane society, my husband went to the humane society today, called animal control, and there's no sign of my girl anywhere.

You all know what I'm thinking? She went on some farmer's land and he SSS! My heart is torn out of my chest thinking that I failed her, that I'm an irresponsible pet owner, that I should have had her tied inside the fenced in area.

If just one of you went through the torment that I'm going through right now, you would think first. You know what? Even if she was shot by a farmer because she chased his chicken or bothered his cattle, at least I would know and I wouldn't be making myself sick worrying and crying all day and night long.

Please, please think before you SSS!

Oh Laurie. Dont think the worst. Maybe she found a friendly face who was willing to give her a snack and hang onto her until she finds you.

Watch the lost and found ads in the Bristol Courier. She is probably missing you as much as you are missing her.

oh baby I am soooo sorry. Border collies are like children, I understand. Maybe she is in some ones back yard safe and waiting to be found, you are really jumping to conclusions. Border collies are seldom the ones shot most farmers and ranchers know their value even though they are chicken chasers.
Keep looking.

Just telling you this to cheer you up. I had an elderly cocker spaniel mix shelter dog named George. His collar said George
I am Deaf

Two of my dogs escaped the yard and George must have followed. The young dogs came back- George did not! I was frantic but at least he had a collar with id. Two days passed and I was sick, couldn't sleep. Finally I answered the phone and someone on the other end screamed into the phone: " I WANT TO SPEAK TO GEORGE, I THINK I HAVE HIS DOG". I calmly explained that is was George the dog that was deaf and we had a good laugh. When I picked him up several miles away I was stunned that he had picked a house with a porch and cedar exterior that looked just like mine. The guy said when he got home from work George was stretched out sunning in front of the door. At least his eye sight was good I guess. He passed on about 6 months later, boy do I miss him!
I hope your dog comes home soon, did he have a collar?

. . . or she could have lost her tags and taken in by a passing motorist who thought she was a stray and decided to keep her. Even if the worst has happened, I'm sure she had a rip roaring good time beforehand.

I'm sorry you're going through this. I've been through the same thing. I don't think it's a valid argument against SSS, but you shouldn't blame yourself, nor necessarily think the worst. My neighbor lost a border collie and found her eight months later at a man's house a few miles away. The man had liked her looks and had decided to keep her, claiming she had no tags when he found her (whether that's true or not is not something I want to dwell on). Even when the odds are totally against it, there's always a sliver of hope.

I would suggest going to the shelter to make sure she isn't there. Although the staff does really try to help it is best if you go yourself to make sure.

And definitely try shelters in surrounding towns and counties in case someone found her further away than you'd expect. I would also contact border collie rescue and place a missing ad on Petfinder. They do more than just adoptions.
