Hatchery stock and Araucanas don't mix.
- As hatcheries don't have real Araucanas. Unless your birds have no tails and no beards but instead tufts (upward curling feathers on side of head) and they lay only blue to blue-green eggs, they're not Araucanas.
The thing is, if you want a hen who weighs 8-10 lbs you really don't need to throw in Jersey Giants, you just need to veer away from hatchery stock. Hatcheries don't breed for dual purpose or size, they breed for egg production. Trust me, if you got a non-hatchery hen of a breed who you're normally used to seeing weigh 5-7 lbs, you'll be amazed at the weight of the non-hatchery ones.
French Marans, Plymouth Rocks, Cornish, Sussex, Orpingtons, - Just a few to name that you can find very nice examples of when looking through show lines or imported lines. I have a Sussex hen who's easily over 8 lbs and my Marans roosters easily finish over 9 lbs when butchered at 8 months or older.
Cornish (
the real ones) when from good stock aren't huge birds when you compare them to Jersey Giants or the sort, but they pack a lot more meat on their bodies than most large breeds. They were after all the original meat bird. . . . Before the Cornish X came into view.
