why when i tell people i raiseandkillmyownchickenmeatdotheycallmecrazy

No problem Lordofchickens,in fact it reminded me of the last venison roast in my freezer...Yummy. I wish I could convince my Mom, maybe if I can raise cornishX, that would look more like the ones in plastic wrap, lol.

The Princess will not eat venison. (Of course she does not know that the meat loaf, meatballs, and meat sauce that I make all are made with venison.

If you raised Cornish X, sure, I'd call ya crazy.

Well, not crazy, but, I just wouldn't think it is all that exciting.

8 weeks and in the freezer.whats not to love. i raise dual pupose breeds. Also making my own D/P breed working on it for 2 1/2 years. bye cockrals tastey. if your wonder in i have no life. hahahahaha

I'm a dual purpose kind of person. Araucanas and Araucana crosses being my favorite at the moment. Their lack of tail really helps breast meat increase due to the lack of balance from a non-existant tail, and thus the birds use a lot of their wings and breast to balance. Also, they're a pretty fast grower and taste wonderful. Plus they're a very unique and awesome bird, and the blue eggs always are a treat.

I'm always working on different crosses and purebred experiments for meat and dual purpose; It's not that I don't have a life though, the poultry and produce/gardens IS my life.

Well, most of my life anyway.

Hi, Illia! Sorry, I am on an Android phone and can't figure out how to quote with it. Just wanted to tell you that some of your posts helped me to come to a decision to raw feed my dog. Don't mean to hi-jack, just cool to me that I can raise food for myself and my pets.

Sorry if I hi-jacked OP. Just love the thought of raising livestock for human family and furry family too.

it is my life too i was just trying to be funny. i would not have it any other way it is my sanity. i love this stuff i am 25 and thats what i do for fun raise my livestock and grow vegatables /flowers,shrubs,etc. i raise AMERICAN BREEDS AND HAVE A FEW ARAUCANAS HATCHERY STOCK my goal is a big hen 8-10 pounds that lays well to using Jeresy giant genes and more american breeds . my aracaunas are 6 monthes they should be laying and are not i am tried of waiting for the first blue egg

Hatchery stock and Araucanas don't mix.

- As hatcheries don't have real Araucanas. Unless your birds have no tails and no beards but instead tufts (upward curling feathers on side of head) and they lay only blue to blue-green eggs, they're not Araucanas.

The thing is, if you want a hen who weighs 8-10 lbs you really don't need to throw in Jersey Giants, you just need to veer away from hatchery stock. Hatcheries don't breed for dual purpose or size, they breed for egg production. Trust me, if you got a non-hatchery hen of a breed who you're normally used to seeing weigh 5-7 lbs, you'll be amazed at the weight of the non-hatchery ones.

French Marans, Plymouth Rocks, Cornish, Sussex, Orpingtons, - Just a few to name that you can find very nice examples of when looking through show lines or imported lines. I have a Sussex hen who's easily over 8 lbs and my Marans roosters easily finish over 9 lbs when butchered at 8 months or older.

Cornish (the real ones) when from good stock aren't huge birds when you compare them to Jersey Giants or the sort, but they pack a lot more meat on their bodies than most large breeds. They were after all the original meat bird. . . . Before the Cornish X came into view.
