Why won’t my chicks go back into the coop at night?

Nice looking flock! Welcome to Backyard chickens

I helped teach my young chickens to roost by going out after it was totally dark and placing them on their roost. I had to do this several times but they eventually got it. Maybe they would have gotten it on their own but it was winter and I didn't like them huddling on the damp ground. I had a different group of young chickens that had been raised with a light and always gravitated to the brightest spot in the coop at night, which wasn't the roost. For them, I would place a solar lawn light by the roost, making it the brightest spot.

Interesting idea. At this point I’ll try anything!

SUCCESS! Well, kinda... I waited until full dark and they trickled in one by one over the course of an hour. :yesss: Only one stayed outside and had to be retrieved. I found it with a flashlight huddled in a corner between the fence and their kiddie pool dust bath. It was shaking and petrified! Poor dummy! Should have followed everyone else. Thank you all for all your great advice and suggestions! :hugs

It’s a big 12x12 shed with 2 south facing windows. Lots of light in there during the day. I don’t think the ramp to get into the coop is too steep. I even put skid/safety tape and “traction” bumps on it to make sure it wasn’t too slippery. View attachment 1387511Theu obiously don’t have a problem playing on it. They just won’t use it to go in at night! :hmm
The ramp looks good.
Are the windows open for ventilation or just for light?
