Why would a rooster take care of some baby chicks?

My D'anver roo flogged me for making his chicks peep :lau:love while I did not appreciate the flogging, I love the sentiment. {I did not let him get away with it though, I caught him and football held him while I finished checking their food and water}

I can induce it with some regularity. See thread below where it came to be accidentally. All roosters I have messed with have the capacity to bond with chicks. When I was a kid it was frequently seen when a cock and hen were single mated in fly-pens used to hold older and higher value brood stock. Cockerels / stags in mature feather are capable of same. Shortly I will be setting up a round of it for classroom demonstrations.
