Wild quail nest

Hi - We have a wild quail nest by our house in the brush. We've watched the eggs increase day by day until there were 12 about 3 days ago. Since then, we haven't seen any new eggs and the quail aren't sitting on them (we've only seen the quail once this whole time). At what point do we assume the nest is abandoned?

I wish I had pics! They were across a large open area when I did see them, and they took off around a corner and disappeared. I thought the eggs were killdeer (we have tons of those) and that someone was pranking me when a new egg would appear every day.

Any pictures of the eggs? I never saw wild quail eggs before...

If you are in the US it is a felony to touch those eggs or nest without the proper permits.

Nope, quail aren't covered.

Nonnative species such as European starlings, rock (feral) pigeons, house sparrows, and mute swans as well as upland gamebirds such as grouse, turkey and quail are not protected under the MBTA.

There may be a state law, however.

Native quail are, if you read the quote you posted it says in the first word. Without knowing the species it's still a felony to touch the nest.

If you think the momma has truly abandoned the nest call your local wildlife office. They can send or refer you to somebody that has the permits and training to get the eggs, hatch, and release them. If you are in Arkansas I have all of above and more than willing to come rescue if you are local. Wild quail are becoming endangered and need to be saved. Too many predators or idiots destroy, don't know, or don't care and think it's cute to take their eggs. Wild turkeys are the same.

Thanks for the info, we have plenty of wild turkey and quail where I live. I will definitely try to keep them safe/leave them be in nature...do you know whether or not it’s illegal to touch/incubate wild finch eggs?
