Wild Weekend at Speckledhen's Chicken Asylum! PICS!

I think Cetawin got distracted by eleventy-jillion bags of feed and such that had to be unloaded, plus spoiling all the new arrivals, plus making sure that the spoiled millies behavior was analyzed by a so-called millie expert...

Yes to all of the above. The birds LOVE their new knockout scratch ... shame I only bought 100 lbs because Thor and the girls thought they were in chicken heaven when he tasted it and called them to it. If you have access to it...BUY IT it is a great mixture. speckledhen can give you the specifics on it I think it is a gamebird feed but basically a rooster food.

Okay so for my pics...

The seed blocks I baked for Cyn's birds...

I have to get pictures of all my new babies from Cyn and Lori...it was a great weekend and I feel like it was too short. I would have loved even more time with both of these wonderful ladies, their family and their birds.

I am so happy she loves them and is eating them.

Tell everyone else I shall visit again and bring goodies with me again.

Oh, for heaven sake, look at that sweet little Tiny!!! I love it!

There is my Isaac!

I love that boy. Where are the Del girls? Did you forget them? Shadow is a beauty, isn't she? Very very nice!

What is this knockout scratch? Something you buy or make? What is the recipe for those seed cakes/blocks you made?

wegotchickens has some gorgeous birds too! I love those Lavender D'Uccles. I do really love Lavenders. The Butterscotch is very beautiful too. Now, can you make some barred butterscotch or barred butterscotch?

Absolutely gorgeous... I must find some mille fleur d'uccles near here, must be somewhere...

*already on a project involving EEs and Silkies, and another project with OEGBs*

Never enough time in the day!

Just had a brain spasm... one of my "mutt" chicks is from a BO rooster over a BR hen... s/he (though I suspect a He) has dark-and-light hackles like the BR but the most wonderful gold-and-white barring on its wings. I must get a picture and post it here for everyone to oogle.

I did not forget the Del girls...only one would come close enough for a picture and I was mad at her...that was Georgie and she was busy stalking Dutch's wattles and I had to thunk her beak a couple of times...so no picture for her. I also did not take pictures of anyone who was molting...there is an unwritten chicken law about doing that so no pics of Gypsy and several others. I also did not get one of Nora the puffed up broody who was in her nest being well puffed up.

This is the normal recipe for my seed blocks but I changed it up a bit for taking to Cyn's which is noted

3 Cups of Hen scratch
1 Cup of whole wheat flour
1/2 Cup flaxseed flour
1/2 Cup grits
1/2 Cup of medium ground cornmeal
1 - 2 Cups of rolled oats
1 TBL of honey
Plenty of hot water

Optional: wild bird seed, millet, groats, winter wheat berries etc etc.

I mixed it all together and poured into well greased baking pans and baked at 350 degrees for about 1 1/2 hours...until it was hard to the touch and browned.

For Cyn's I added grapeseed oil (a couple Tablespoons), dropped the oats, grits and cornmeal and added a couple duck eggs for the extra protein (molting girls and boys down there in GA)

The Knockout is by Faithway and comes in 50lb it 13% protein 3.6% fat 6% fiber I will snap a picture of this stuff tomorrow and post it for you...it is a great mix and they love it as a little treat in the morning and evening.

Tiny is absolutely adorable and she is an excellent trainer of humans. She had all of us listening to her, picking her up, carrying her and letting her have her way.

That Shadow is a danged mess. Such a princess! She has a special rock by the feeder to stand on so she can reach it and she chased Tiny off of HER ROCK. LOL

Kathy, this is the Knockout Game Bird Feed I use as a scratch--it's been changed recently and they added a touch more whole kernal corn to it, to bring the protein level from 13% to 12%, but it's still the best thing I know of to use as scratch and has 11 grains, they say. They love it and it's the main part of Zane's feed.
