Haven't read through this thread yet, just the first post. We're just a few miles from the Carr Fire here in Redding, California.
Have you ever had to evacuate with chickens before? I started a preparation discussion months ago, but dumb me. I'm good at talking things up, not so good at actual preparation.
I have things I need to go and do. Please post any ideas or your own experiences here. Spot fires from embers are starting to ignite. If we have to evacuate, we're unsure of how that works, where we'll need to go, how to manage this with almost no spare funds.
I'll call the local Red Cross and sheriff's office, the animal shelter and see if my calls will be answered. Now is not the time to be figuring this out.
You don't own all that guilt you're carrying.... you did what you could. So sorry things happened the way they did.I am absolutely devastated to announce this, just totally crushed. I'm here in the forums, offering help where I can and encouraging preparedness, but did I prepare for the inevitability of wildfire and evacuation?
NO.
When we saw a massive wall of fire crest a ridge behind our home and rapidly burn down that mountain, and heard exploding propane tanks like we were in a war zone, we stopped what we were doing, grabbed five of our eight cats, the four dogs, and evacuated.
And now in this extreme heat and with a fire storm raging out of control, my darling flock is there all by themselves. They have tons of water and food and some shade shelter, but stupid me should have left the gate open so they can shelter under the deck from the heat. They've been doing that all summer.
I called the sheriff's office and requested someone go and get our cats and chickens, or at least open the door to the chicken yard. But with thousands evacuating, that's not going to happen. Somehow, so far anyway, our teeny dead end road has escaped fire. I don't know how that's even possible.
I'm near Simmons Road off of Placer. You can look that up on a map if you're interested in tracking this fire. The entire road above Buenaventura has been blocked. If you leave, you can't go back.
Please pray for my animals. I let them down. I had time to do something, but based on what I was learning about the fire, we thought we had time to prepare. We didn't.
Thank you.
Wait, you mean the Carr Fire? This just happened to you? You lost two dogs in the fire? Oh, my god. Where are you now? Do you need any help? Tell me what you're needing. If they lift the evacuation order and let us go home, I can offer you some help.Haven't read through this thread yet, just the first post.
I got burned out of old Shasta in the middle of the night, so quickly that I lost all of my birds, along with my home. I evacuated I to town where I thought it was safe. Took my 4 dogs with me. While out running errands and getting dinner, the place I evacuated to also burned to the ground. Only 2 of my dogs have survived, as I could not get through the road closures to save them.

I am so sorry for your losses, both home and animals.Haven't read through this thread yet, just the first post.

It was absolutely amazing, and it's a story that has lifted up others, too. The good news stories are hard to come by right now. They broke a window to get inside our home. If the house survives, Liberty Mutual will repair or replace the door, and we don't care about vandals.
Please continue to pray for my flock. They're totally exposed to predators now, but they also have the deep, refrigerated shade under the deck from the crazy heat and a fighting chance should the fire jump across Placer.
