That sounds like something is disturbing them in the early morning. It could be any number of things. Rats, 'possums, raccoons, hawks, skunk, coyote. I live in a pretty urban environment and I've seen everything in that list except for coyote in my yard.

I live in england the only thing that can disturb them are rats and foxes for what I know and my house is pretty new it's on the outskirts and in the plains it's probably mice since next to them my canrie house is and there was mice problem before however the house is placed on higher ground so not sure
