Will hens kill older chicks once they start laying again?

Bantam has been a good mama to her 5 week old chick, then this morning we found the chick dead and she had also laid an egg. Did she kill the chick because she laid a new egg?

Mother and chicks by the nature of their bond are well integrated. I would be shocked if the mother is the culprit. Are the group being housed separately or with the flock? What size is their enclosure? Are there signs of physical injury on the chick that died or could there be another cause?

Mother and chick were housed separate from the flock. Their enclosure is a 4x6 coop. No wounds or injuries on the chick. She only had two eggs that hatched. The first one died on day two. The one that we found dead this morning was 5 weeks old, but still very small. Maybe the size of a small kiwi. I just thought it odd, because the little chick seemed strong and healthy, but we find it dead the same time mother starts laying again.
