Thanks guys, seems pretty unanimous. Sad though. Means he has to go. Not sure about the other one either. She's supposed to be a speckled Sussex but I don't think she is! She's the same age as this one but a lot smaller and feathers are completely different so hopefully she's a girl! Will have to see about getting another one for company. Does anyone have opinions on point of lay hens? So I know what I'm getting..?

What are you asking? When hens lay? Mine are 4 months old and they haven't laid yet, but all chickens are different.

Agree it's a cockerel, I'm thinking maybe a partridge Rock.

If you're looking at buying birds older than 6 ish weeks, see if you can get pics and post them here. We can usually tell gender at that point, much younger and it gets tricky.

More if it's a good idea to get chickens at point of lay. Obviously we got these birds quite young. I wanted older so I knew what I was getting but was told by several people that getting them younger is better so you can make sure they're used to being handled. Just wondered what you guys thought was best, younger or older birds?
