Will Muscovy Females Fly Away?

Mine free ranged just fine in my mom's backyard in her subdivision, and they had a pen to go into when I wasn't home, and their small coop to sleep in. I had five back then. My three girls play in the mud in the backyard here, i dug small trenches, so the water flows for them under the fence. Technically, they're free ranging here too inside the enclosed back yard.

You're talking about irresponsible owners, not about ppl that care about their pets. Ducks do not need to be free ranged, they can be in an enclosed area protected and digging up the ground, eating what they find...

I'm trying to figure out how the muscovy is considered a nuisance, since it was dumped at a pond. All I ever see them doing is swimming, eating stuff off the ground, sleeping, raping and plundering, or just being chill. And if anyone says anything about their poop, I gotta say that's the lamest excuse I've ever heard since their poo is water soluble and can be removed easier then any mammal's. I can see them landing on a parked car or something, and upsetting ppl because their nails scratch and they poop on it. I guess I just dont get as upset about stuff as most ppl.

That all being said, the OP asked about flying and wing clipping - not to be told she shouldn't have the pet she already does because you sound as if you're assuming she will be irresponsible because she lives in the city limits and can not free range constantly.

She is taking care of her muscovy, building it a run to keep it safe, learning about clipping wings to keep it safe, and is trying.

I'm saying they become a nuisance to the people in subdivisions when people leave them at ponds because it was in an article just posted about a subdivision. They called them a nuisance, I didn't...

Most HOA's don't allow livestock animals in VA because they have had issues with people owning livestock then getting complaints.

I'm allowed to have my opinion if livestock should be in subdivisions. I don't care how nice or responsible a person is with their livestock animals, they don't belong in subdivisions. There are some things that I have learned as I've become older and owned my own property. You CANT have everything you want.

If you're a responsible duck owner then good for you :clapi don't like seeing animals be put in situations then they are the ones who suffer in the end. A subdivision just killed hundreds of muscovy due to them invading the subdivision due to certain owners allowing just a few to free range... they started breeding and it caused a nuisance to the subdivision.

If the OP can care for them properly then that's fine...

I'm putting what happens in reality when ducks are allowed in subdivisions and allowed to free range.

Clip their wings that's all I can say and also keep them in a run so they cannot leave the property. You don't want them damaging the neighbors property.

I'm glad I live where they are considered what they are, fowl, and not livestock. The town I live in is very specific as to what is considered livestock - and it's basically herding animals - cattle, horses, sheep, goats, ect.. and chickens/ducks and all other birds go under fowl. With livestock, they are not allowed to be within 30 feet of the main residence, and you have to have about a half acre per animal. Whereas fowl have to be in an enclosed area, no distance restrictions, and kept sanitary if you have 10 or more. And they are not allowed to wander the streets. Another reason for me to stay where I'm at...

I thought it was funny to have an officer <whom I called for an unrelated reason> tell me that he doesn't think I'm allowed to have that many <3> ducks within city limits, and I quoted the ordinance to him... he called the building inspector on me because he didn't believe or know the ordinances. Building inspector laughed at him, and loved how my girls cuddled up to me cause of the dork neighbor scaring them. Speedy on my shoulder, beedee on my arm, and sugar on my lap. :lau:love:yesss:

I only clip 1 x a year right after they have their big molt in the fall and grow back in their flight feathers, that clipping last till next molt the following fall.

Since your in a populated area probably best not to risk it.

For myself? When I owned female scovies yes they were flight able but I free ranged so it did help and it was a big flock so they liked being able to get up from the drakes.

We used to have a few roof walkers which was funny because we have multiple skylights and they’d look in lol
