As to the color of eggs changing, it is right that they won't change from blue to brown or brown to white, but brown eggs will get lighter as the hen starts laying larger eggs and more quickly. It's the same with the dark egg layers like Marans, Welsumers and Penedesencas: when hens first start laying, the eggs are very dark, and then they tend to stabilize at a somewhat lighter color. (The brown on the shell is deposited as it moves through the hen's system; the faster it goes, the less brown is laid down.) Some illnesses and medications can cause egg color to lighten, too. (Don't worry... I'm not suggesting your hen is sick!)
Those old Jiffy-Way egg scales were great low cost items that were very popular with back yard chicken raisers since way back in the 1930s. They were easy to use, easy to read and being made of all metal parts would last forever. Unfortunately they don't make them anymore. The new replacement for the Jiffy-Way costs around $65.00. There were so many of them in use its pretty easy to find then for sale as collectibles. eBay is a good source.
Well, today was kind of sad.
I found a few splatters of dried egg yolk on the wall by the roost.
Egg eaters?
I didn't get any eggs today, but hopefully it was just a soft shell egg that slipped out during the night and the girls ate it. Maybe? I hope?
I guess I'll see what happens tomorrow.
I took two of my precious eggs to my grandma yesterday.
She thought they were great.
Small, but great. Only two? Great. "But LOOK at the 2 DOZEN eggs the neighbor gave me. Green and brown and white. They're nice eggs! Yours are OK too sweetie. Have a cookie." Great?
