Will this chicken-door work?

Don't think a coon can't scale a metal wall. Those things are pretty darn resourceful creatures.

And then there is the proverbial chicken hawk.

"You gotta - I say, you gotta keep on your toes. Toes, that is."

Do you have silkies? This just won't work for them.. Mine would TRY to fly out, but would end up landing hard on the ground.

Raccoons are sneaky.. They might be able to reach it.. I've seen them problem solve.

The reason that there has not been a lot of response maybe that you on trying something new to everyone else too. So let us know how it works out.

How high off the ground do you plan for this door?

I think you would have to train them to go back in through that hole, by having a ramp or ladder for a while, which would also teach any predators... and yes, an owl or hawk would go through the hole. If it was me, I'd be putting a live trap at the mouth of the hole every night, which defeats the whole point of not having to go close the door in the first place.

Just when you think you are smarter than a varmit, you find out you were wrong. We have found out that if there is a place where a critter can get in, it will. Its better to have all entry points closed.
