Yep....I like them so much better than store bought. I know they have had a good life and enjoyed healthy foods. I try to do this about every 6 months. I believe that is their purpose on Earth. They are here to feed us. My purpose is to give them a good life first!

This is my favorite reply to this thread. I don't have it in me to butcher animals I raise. But this reply I can respect and relate to.

The original post and first couple of replies seemed odd to me, maybe a cultural thing, but made me question the intent. Just sayin'.

I haven't processed any of mine yet. I gave away 7 roosters today because I had way too many roosters. I WISH I could process them - and I hope that someday I will be able to do it. That's a goal of mine because I want to be more self-sufficient and raise/grow as much of our food as possible.

Here we go again. This guy is a troll plain and simple. Yes I would raise, kill and eat my own chickens, since they are more healthy than the ones from factory farms and I know they've been raised humanely. A LOT of us would do the same. Not everyone is going to side with you and say "OMG NO I would not kill my chickens!!!!!!!!!!" Different strokes for different folks.

We plan on getting ours processed professionally. We're raising a beef cow and will have it processed at a meat processing plant as well. It just doesn't make sense for us to buy all the equipment and spend the time to process them ourselves, vs. paying $1 or so per bird for processing. See if this is an option for you....

There is much to be said for knowing where your food comes from. In our case, it has been fun beyond belief to teach our kids how to properly care for the animals, take responsibility for them, track their costs and produce. And, they have a huge sense of pride when they contribute to our livelihood.

If thread-starter is a troll, it is unfortunate. Humanely raising your food, controlling your own standards of hygiene and ensuring a low-stress passing of your flock is certainly not wrong. I will not judge those that can't bring theirselves to "do the deed." Likewise, I won't be judged by them for my willingness to "do the deed."

I DO have a problem with someone that neglects his/her flock, abuses his/her animals, kills the livestock in an inadequate manner, etc.

It is nothing like saying murder is wrong but hiring a hit man is fine!

Have you eaten horse? Would you? Why or why not? People around the world eat horse every day.

Have you eaten dog? Would you? Why or why not? People around the world eat dog every day.

I have eaten horse, they sell it in the grocery stores in Switzerland and I must say it was phenomenal. I would eat it again in a heartbeat. Though, if I owned a horse I would probably not eat it. I would love for someone to eat it, but I probably wouldn't.

I believe that when people make a connection with an animal they, naturally, have reservations when it comes to consuming the animal with which they have had a relationship.

If the person said they could never kill any chicken (theirs or otherwise) but they eat chicken, now that is like saying murder is wrong but hiring a hit man is OK. And when your talking about chicken murder or chicken hit-man, neither one is wrong!

ETA: I have four backyard, city hens and I am planning on eating them. Though it does depend on how long they produce eggs and how long I live in city. If I can get out of town and into some property before these hens reach their end I will probably let them live out their lives wherever we move. Since at that point I will definitely have a tractor full of meat birds and a big coop of layers. I figure letting my city hens live out their days on a nice piece of land is the least I can do for cooping them up in a little backyard for years! Though if we are ready to get new layers before we move then our current flock will be processed and eaten by my family.
I've eaten both horse & dog when visiting cultures where this was the norm. What else ya got?

Yeah, its a troll,

But that doesn't mean that its a bad question. I thought it was a great question. I was actually really interested in seeing every-ones responses. What does surprise me is how few people here would not slaughter their layers. Its almost a unanimous response in favor of the choppy chop.

This is a great point by PDXcluck,

Americans waste food like no one else on the planet, especially kids and teens. Its common for my 14 year old daughter to throw away half of her Chicken dinner or shepherds Pie. And I have been guilty of it too, but when you raise the animal and send that animal to slaughter. You have a connection with it, and you aren't going to simply throw it out. You respect it more.

If memory serves, you've gone down this exact same road before on this forum, haven't you?

That's what I was thinking...
