The "buttercream" my mom made was crisco, sugar, flavor, and a bit of water.

Ick.

I just bought my first cake decorating equiptment and made my first cake-- it was a hit! Please share photos. I LOVE those wild-looking cakes decorated with fondant with squirly gigs going in every direction. People are so creative!

I also have to find 10x confectioners' sugar since the kind I have right now is something different. I've heard I can get it at Costco or at Spartan Stores.

i thought all powdered sugar was 10x ? it usually says it right on the box.

i have the Bakers & Chefs brand from Sam's Club. it says 10x ultra-fine.

*shivers* butter cream .... ick.

I make an icing using whipped cream and/or Cool Whip and instant pudding mix. Its wonderful!

Butter cream is just toooooooo sweet for me.

Newnanchic, your cakes are really cool! The fondant wedding cake is beautiful. The one I love the most, though, is the corset cake; was that for a wedding shower or bachelorette party?

I'm really looking forward to learning how to make the roses.

Lady_Jayne, the instructor warned us that all powdered sugar wasn't the same. Apparently, if it doesn't explicitly say "10x" on the package, it's not 10x. Me? I didn't even know there were different kinds...

Oh well, I'm hoping to be less of a "cake n00b" very soon!

Okay, you guys, this is so cruel. Cake with that butter cream frosting is my downfall, and you all know that I'm on a "diet" or lifestyle change, or whatever this is. Those cakes are so great. Now, I will go make a boxed cake and sit here and eat the batter, JUST KIDDIN, well, maybe not.
