wind chill ~ single digets ~need warming foods

Our thermometer reads -15

and that of course isn't with the windchill!!! I did leave lights on last night (have 2 red 250 watt bulbs), our coop is insulated when built, and have a large heated dog dish for water, which works great, and their feeders are full. It's 0700 and am way too cold to go and check.

The temps are hovering around freezing this morning which is noticibly warmer than the past couple weeks. The sun is shining, but we're having 30+ mph winds with gale force gusts. The windows are rattling and small branches are flying off the trees all over the yard.

I just looked out my window and saw all of our chickens outside in the run dust bathing and scratching around, and being their usual silly selves. They don't seem to even notice the winds or temps at all.

Ohhh Yeahhh, Our girl grabbed the little sun there was yesterday and basked in the rays. Today the sun is in and out, but the girls are all enjoying the zero wind.
The temp is mid 20's and I'm relieved. I sure love these girlies and Earl., but remember my dads words, "They are Farm Animals... don't name them" needless to say they are all named and loved. AND he would die if he knew I gave them Bag Balm messages and warm water cocktails last night. Oh well

We are on the other side of the state and we got to -10. I have heated dog bowls too. 1 in coop and 1 in run. I open pop door in moring and close at night and they prefer to go out in it. Part of run is blocked from wind, and then they go in and out of coop. My coop is insulated, but with venting it only stays a degree or two warmer inside. I do not use any type of heat or lights, and they are all doing fine.
