Hello
My chicks are 3 weeks old, and they are feathering out, some of their upper wing bone's look bare, is this normal, and should I put red lights in their brooder so they don't think that they can pick? Right now I have 2 250 heat lights, and 1 250 heat light, they are outside and it is cold here.

Yes it's normal for some chicks to feather out slowly across the wing bows. It's really normal with some baby roos

If you are having a problem with pecking red lights can help.

Some of mine look awful, like they ran through a lawn mower. It can vary depending on breed, but expect bare spots until they are a bit older. It's always a good idea to observe their behavior, and gritsar makes a great suggestion re. red lights to make sure everything's mellow in the brooder.

Hope that helps!
