"Yes, Thorn, they may. You can show them around camp if you wish." he replied.

The crimson speck on the horizon came increasingly closer, behind it was a black one, now identifiable as birds. "Remind me again why you've brought me all the way out here?" one asked, in an impatient tone. "You'll see." the other replied blandly. "I've been following you for hours and I would like to know why-" "Patience! You will soon see." hissed the other. The first one opened his beak as to make a remark but did not. "Oh, no. No, no, no..." he spluttered, "Problem?" the other asked, giving him an intent glance. "We're going to live with some primitive forest chickens?" the other blurted. "They're not primitive," the other answered, "I was once one of them, if you recall." he snapped. "Right, yeah..." the other mumbled, deciding by now it was best to shut his beak.

Moon laid her head gently against the egg, laughing in her heart, she closed her eyes and listened. It was alive inside, she could hear it peeping, her little eggs were hatching. She could barely contain her joy and found herself smiling like she hadn't smiled in years. She wanted to scream it to the world, she never thought she would see the day when her chicks hatched, never thought she'd get this far. Now if only he was here, then things would be complete. She like most everyone else had the dream of a perfect family, a mate, a few chicks and a nice home. But long ago she had resigned to the fact that the perfect life wasn't hers and that she would make due just fine with what was given her.
So many things to plan now, so much work! Earlier, on one of her searches, she had found a possible home. It was not perfect and she was still looking but it would do if she could find no other. A small hollow hidden in the brambles, not the prettiest but as safe as one could hope for out here. She could clean it out, work on some sort of door to keep the insects and other small pests at bay. It really wasn't ba--, her thought pattern was interrupted by a loud peep. Finally, one had of her eggs had pipped, wouldn't be long now.
"Hello baby" she churred, "Welcome to the world"

All was right at that moment, her babies warm and safe, it was just like a dream.
The one had zipped around and was resting while the second chipped away at it's shell. She carefully stood as not to disturb them and gently pulled her left leg up and over. Hungry and cramped, she still didn't want to leave but forced herself too.
She jumped down, crossing her eyes and swearing softly as her ankles cracked. Wheezing, she let out her breath heavily and hobbled over to her food stash, the sun was setting now and she would not be up again till mid afternoon tomorrow. Sour berries were all that remained of her stash, they were not bad or unhealthy, just sour tasting. She choked down a few, promising to get up a little earlier and hunt for something else, perhaps make a run for Wc. She was still unsure if she should even tell those in Wc. She wanted to tell them all, but Red was still off and telling one would mean the word would get out somehow. Flower was still there too, at least to her knowledge, little snake, little evil snake. I cannot risk it.
It had changed so much, but she left first, she could not blame them, most of them at least. Es on the other hand, falling for a worm, hook, line and sinker.
She brushed away the thoughts and rolled her eyes, bowing to the setting sun she turned and smiled, heading back to her babies.
There they lay, still safe and warm, she set herself gently on top. The frogs and night birds starting their lullaby, the occasional forest beast joining in. She smiled again as the last ray of sun disappeared behind the forests veil, leaving the land cloaked in twilight.

She woke with a start, her heart thudding rapidly. It was dark, it was night now, the spring new leaves on trees obscuring the stars and the moon. Fear coursed through her and for the life of her, she couldn't figure why. She checked her eggs, gently with her beak, they fine. One peeped at her touch and her hackles rose, quickly she removed her beak. The fear was so bad now it hurt, it burned, she wanted to fly off into the dark. Then it hit her, no noise, not a sound. Dark silence greeted her, the frogs the birds--- A leaf crackled. Her head rushed around, she couldn't see in the dark. Thoughts blended and swam, she was dizzy and her gizzard felt ill. She was a sitting target, she couldn't abandon the nest. Everything told her to run, to fly towards the star light, to get out of there.
A mouse, it's a mouse, a rabbit or a deer.... A deer, it h-has to be.
The more she told herself, the more she did not believe it.
A single frog resumed it's call from a long ways away.

"Thank you," she clucked. Thorntalon bowed her head and walked back to the medicine den.

CycloneTail saw the birds on the horizon come closer and perked up, ready to fight if needed.
