Mine live roughly the same life year-round: the coop door opens, they can go out if they want to or stay in if they want to. There certainly isn't much forage for them in the winter but the exercise getting out is good for them, and they need the mental stimulation too. Being confined for long periods leads to boredom, which leads to behavioral issues like feather picking.

We have nice winter weeds. Let them do their thing. Scratching, digging, bathing, eating surprise things.
