Winter water?

I have chickens and we found this old heated chicken waterer you just put a 100 watt light bulb in it and the chickens water will not freeze

We're using a baby pig waterer bolted to the side of the coop. It's removable from the frame, very washable and holds 1 gallon so it works great for our 5 chickens! It's enough water for 3 days. You could put it on a heat source too, as the frame is metal. We looked FOREVER to find something small enough that they couldn't poop in.

That is exactly what I was hoping to find when I logged into BYC today!

Last year I broke more waterers than I care to think about with the ice and all. I'm going to check this out; right now!

Wow, Why didin't I think of this? I was raised with pigs! LOL Seriously though, I maybe able to find something like this in full metal, than an old coffee cup warmer would work like a charm.

I am using a 5 gallon bucket for my 8 hens, with 4 nipples in the bottom of the bucket. I plan on punching a hole in the lid and installing a 150W aquarium heater set to it's lowest setting. They're cheap ($15 at walmart), safe (designed to be submersed with aquatic livestock), and simple.

It stays relatively warm in the coop overnight, due to the hen's heat output and the lack of drafts in the coop. I haven't yet seen it drop below zero (it's already been frost at nights up here in Eastern Canada), but it's always been 5 or more degrees C warmer in the coop than the external temperature.

I saw a great idea yesterday (but can't find it now to link to)
They took one of the heated dog bowls and one of the small water-ers (like used in a brooder). They cut the rim off of the base so it was just the bottle above and the screw on base below - no 'dish' to catch the water.
Then they epoxied it inside the dog dish. The bottle provides more water than the bowl can hold all at once so it lasts longer. Also, the bottle takes up a good portion of the middle of the bowl so they can't walk in it. The bowl keeps it all nice and warm so none of it freezes.
Sounds like a good solution for a small flock - IF you have electricity at the coop.
The only tricky part was being very careful to find an adhesive that was water proof/non-toxic/heat resistant.

Yes, we settled on this because we couldn't fit a standard waterer in the coop and still leave them enough space to hang out in on cold days. I was walking around the feed store just so depressed because I imagined myself cleaning the coop out every second day when they tipped over the chick waterer. (Besides the fact I had to fill it every day and it got filled with poop even sitting up on a box.) We mounted it high enough that they can drink from it, but still hang out underneath it if they want. (The coop is 3x4') We were a little worried it wouldn't hold up under the weight, but it's solid as a rock!
