Winter without electricity in Alaska

I for one most certainly envy you. I would gladly go and live in a remote cabin where I'm off the grid. I wouldn't worry too much about the chickens as I'm sure they'll survive just fine as long as you're there to take certain precautions. In fact, I bet there are some other members on here who are in the same position as you are. Is solar power an option at all, or even wind power?

Above all.......best of luck and when you get a chance, let us know how you're getting on.

There is not enough sun in the winter to use a solar heater in Alaska. The angle is too low as well, the amount of actual power is not sufficient to make it even considerable. Never mind storage issues.

OH wow, Wolfwoman! I can't imagine not having running water or electricity.......I'd make a terrible pioneer. Is there a special reason for the move? Is it to become more green? Are you a naturalist? Or, is it to simply save money? Maybe it's an adventure?

Very sorry in advance if I have asked too many questions!

Where are you at in Alaska? I was In Cordova for 2 years.

I would enjoy living off the grid like you do.I am jealous and envious at the same time...Lucky Stiff!!

Snow and crushed ice should be fine for water.
For warmth. I like the dug in idea too. Maybe tarps or skins over a wood frame they moss and lichen then balsa bows. Once the snow cover is deep pile that on too. Maybe a high center vent for a chimney effect. Maybe during super cold weather, you could toss in some large rocks that were warmed in the fire. (You know like in a smoke sauna or sweat lodge.)

For the outside area I would construct a steep sided A frames out of saplings lashed at the peak and and braced in the center. Cover the whole thing with more balsa bows to shed the snow.

No internet.....

Honestly for me that is about the only thing that would be a sacrifice...

Why the move to the bush? Running a winter trap line?
