I am a newbie at chicken owning and I was wondering some good tips to winterize my coop to keep my girls warm. I also could use some good tips on how to keep their water from freezing. Would a fish filter work because they are constantly circulating the water and it would act like a river and rivers never freeze because they're constantly moving.

Don't know your location, but even here in the midlands of SC a fish tank filter/pump would not work. We don't have below freezing temps for extended periods of time (3 days or so), but when we do, even my backyard fountain would freeze and it's pump was rated at 850 gph.

A stock tank deicer would be best for keeping the water thawed. Winterizing a coop is fairly easy. Give it a good clean out, make sure its well ventilated but not drafty. Make sure your roosts are wide enough that your chickens can cover their entire foot with their feathers when hunkered down. And there you go, coop winterized!

I just went to menards and picked up a heated pet bowl. They have 1 and 5 quarts if either would be adequate for your needs. Reviews are overall very good. A few duds. If you need larger amounts of water, look to see if you can find any small pond pumps on sale. I once dabbled in that hobby here in northern Illinois. The pump did well overwinter. I was in a rental property too, so the preformed pond wasn’t even dug below the frost line as I didn’t want to create an extensive return to the way it was job. Ice did form, but nowhere near as not having a pump and I’m sure you could break it up occasionally instead of all the time. Many fish survived.
