winterizing for a peahen

I haven't used the Rooster Booster wormer, but after a quick search for the ingredients, not sure I would put much faith in it OR want to use it.

It's a little irritating that the manufacturer's website doesn't seem to clearly & prominently list the active ingredients.

I did find some information, finally, on another website.

http://www.mypetchicken.com/catalog...Booster-Triple-Action-Multi-Wormer-p1399.aspx

It's apparently a "continuous feed" medication, so includes very low doses of the two active ingredients: Hygromycin B, 400 grams per ton; Bacitracin Methylene Disalicylate, 400 grams per ton -- Hygromycin B is an antibiotic. I found more about it here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hygromycin_B

Bacitracin Methylene Disalicylate is an antibiotic feed additive (growth enhancer) used to improve weight gain. I found more information here:

http://zxadditives.com/en/zootechnical-additives/152-bacitracin-methylene-disalicylate

The FAQ page for Rooster Booster states it can take up to 6 weeks to work. It looks to me like a recipe for creating antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria, and after reading up on the ingredients, it is not something I would choose to give my critters under any circumstances. I personally don't object to treating a sick animal with antibiotics, but this sort of continuous feed, low-level antibiotic dosing is exactly the sort of thing which creates antibiotic resistance, and since I use Bacitracin on humans here to combat minor skin infections, I wouldn't want to be creating Bacitracin-resistant bacteria in my backyard

Seems to me there are safer, more effective ways to worm both peas and chickens... I would suggest Rooster Booster wormer should be consigned to the history books.

I pasted stuff below that I copied from the "My Pet Chicken" catalog (link above) where I found the actual ingredients, but who knows if it will show up in the message when I post this... If you don't see the info below, try the link above.

And welcome to the Peafowl forum!

New and very exciting! Rooster Booster's Triple Action Multi-Wormer contains Hygromicin B--the only FDA-approved wormer on the market--which means you never have to worry about "withdrawing" eggs while you're treating your flock. It protects against the three major worms that affect poultry: round worms, cecal worms and capillary worms. (It works in turkeys, ducks, geese, pigeons and quail, too! It is safe for use on hens and will not affect unhatched eggs.)

It ALSO contains active ingredients that treat chronic respiratory disease, air sac infection, mud fever and infectious enteritis (blue comb), and vitamins, minerals and amino acids to help keep your chickens in tip-top shape.

Manufacturer's Dosage Instructions: Top dress one (1/3 ounce) scoop for every one pound of feed or mix one 1.25lb container with 50 lbs of feed. (Here at MPC, we top dress our 22lb hanging feeder with three scoops, for three days in a row, at the beginning of every month to make sure every hen gets some, to effectively interrupt the worm life cycle.)
