Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Ok, It's official. I have 9 bantam cochins that I hatched from the egg auction. I paid for extra's. They were suppose to be all lavenders !!!!! Well, they are not. After talking with the person she said she has since gotten rid of her lavenders because the split to lavender roo that was in with her lavender hens wasn't giving her the correct type or whatever.
First of all I said I only wanted to participate in the egg chain if I could get only out of her lavender pen. At that time she said she had a lavender roo !!! Now it was a lavender split

 and people are getting lavenders, blues and blacks !!! So for one that ticks me off. I only wanted the lavenders. What the criminy do these people think because it is an egg chain that it doesn't really matter what they say ????

Ok now for the good part !!!!!! I have ONE hen and EIGHT ROOSTERS !!!!! DUCK !!!

Ok, I spouted off now. Thanks for listening. Supposedly they are all split to lavender. The pictures she sent me are very nice light lavenders of the hens !!!

Anyway, I don't even know if I want to try to breed them to see if I get any lavenders. My luck I'll get all black roosters etc. The hen is blue and I have of course plenty blue and black roosters to choose from for Daddy.
I wanted to breed the lavender cochins to a lavende silkie to get lavender silkie/cochns. They are adorable !!
Oh and to top it off I placed an order with Ideal for lavende silkies. Got 4, 3 died (had a perfect one too with a vaulted skull and everything) and of course that one didn't make it !!
The ONE and only that I have left has the 5 toes, dark skin but isn't that fluffy !! AND it is a ROOOOOOOSTER !!!

I have a very nice Lavender Rooster that is in with some black hens right now so I don't want to use him for my project. Might just use Ideal boy. That way if the hen carries the lavendr gene I should get some lavender crosses !!! I hope !!

My two lavender Orpingtons one is a Rooster for sure and I think the other one is a hen. They feathered in kind of weird. Hen still doesn't have much of a tail yet. Then I have some black one, One Rooster and a coupld of hens but don't laugh, I'm not sure they are Orpingtons or Austrslorps ???? I ordered a few of them from Ideal for me and the neighbor and they got some roosters by accident too !!! Geez, I can't even order pullets from a hatchery and I get ROOSTERS !!
I give up !!
Tomorrow is another trip to the feed store for 1000 lbs !!!

I think I'll have to furnish roosters for next years chicken dinner bash !!!
Ok, having a cup then back to chores, or should I say counting roosters AGAIN !!!

FT, I think, but don't quote me on this, that black orps will just be black. But Aussies have a greenish sheen to their black feathers, that I do know is fact. Also, orps are more loosely feathered, making them look bigger, while the feathers on an Aussie are more smooth against their bodies. HTH

I would love your T3, TO, but aren't you getting a Dom roo from FT? Did you still want Moose?

ETA-I think BBP would be the one to ask about black orps, FT.

Good afternoooooon all! I am quickly writing a post cause...I dont know whay I am on here again! Came in to get dinner going and then I am off to take a ride....wait for it....ON MY HORSE! Well, If I can catch him...they are out on the pasture and evidently all the burrs have not been harvested by their manes and tails because he looks worse than the pick I posted of him before I cleaned him up last time!!! I am doing those pony rides for that fund raiser and better get him clean! Prolly should ride him to to get the "ya-yas" out! Hate to have a little kid on him when he decides that he is an donkey!

CC I would love to trade for Moose...I dont know if FT is bringing her Dom down...are you FT? I dont really need to get rid of any Tobies and I only need one Dom...I do only have Elaine...she probably wouldnt appreciate 2 suitors! I really want some more Dominique hens! Anybody have them?
I raised my prices for eggs to $2.50 today where my daughter delivers them...I almost died when I saw how much my feed bill was!!! Yes Elaine...we will be butchering soon!
OK I need to go--I wanted to post a pic of my ameracaunas feathered legs but I couldnt catch one...oh yeah...I only have 1 pigeon left now...that owl must be getting fat!

FT-there isn't really an easy, quick way to tell Australorps and Orpingtons apart. The black orps have the same feather, beak, shank and bottom of the feet color. The Orpingtons have a shorter neck and much puffier butt. They look much larger than the Australorps. I think the Ausralorp hens have longer tail featherss

hi all, I mowed around the garden today.. most of the other grass has stopped growing,, I have about 8 birch stumps to dig out.. I let a guy come in and cut them all down for his firewood.. Once the stumps rot a bit, they just pop out of the ground with a little help from the tractor loader..

I am waiting for the pork chops to get done.. I am hungry tonight.

I just had the first quail hatch,, 58 more to go..

the turkey is still laying about an egg a day.. we are giving them to a friend.. she is new to hatching and cannot stand to see an egg not hatch..

speaking of weird dreams.. last night I dreamed that I ate a giant marshmallow.. this morning my pillow was gone..

Thank you for replying !!! I thought I must be nuts that I can't tell the difference !!! The lavender orps aren't as fluffy as my buff's of course because they are a project I guess. I got them on the egg chain or aucction. Don't remember.
I'll have to get pictures. I have one hen that had an injured leg since she was young. She managed to survive and her leg is almost on backwards. Think that is either an Australorpor orpington. I will breed her since she was injured I believe. She wasn't hatched that way.

TO yes i plan on brining you a Roo or ten !!!

Howdy, all! Kristip, your daughter with chicks pictures are adorable. She's just beaming!

Been busy - went to a vineyard on Sat. & picked 120+ lbs. of grapes for fresh eating, juice, wine, sorbet and pies. Took some time to get those squared away. Froze a lot to deal with later and have 5 gallon bags in the frig waiting for me to decide what I want to do second (DH got the wine started). Pear butter's going in the crockpot and I have a recipe for spiced pickled pears I want to try tomorrow.

Sure am glad we didn't get hit with frost! I have a few large beautiful tomatoes turning color. Another year of disappointment in the garden - just have to accept that I don't get enough sun to really have a productive garden and what I am successful with the critters (squirrel and chipmunks) get before me. But I'll keep trying! Have 6 (?) types of beautiful garlic to get planted this week & 1/2 of a double driveway full of perennials, too. Sure hope I find the energy and motivation to get 'er done!

TO, you sure confuse the HE-double-hockey sticks out of me every time you talk about Elaine (the chicken). Maybe you chould call her Chicken Elaine? I swear, if my hubby ever gets on this site with you talking about hooking Elaine up -- I'm gonna have some explaining to do (like he'll believe you named your chicken after me!) Re: chicken processing -- yes, we have to get a date set, October's flying!

Got to run - enjoy the sunshine this week!

Hey all...typing with one hand cause I am eating my PORK CHOPS!!! Jim you copycat! This is too hard.....

Here you go DrH--http://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=580968&p=1 a contest for your birds!

So I started this posr a LOOONG time ago and now I am back to finish...I was eating delicious chops made with squash, onion and apples that I found of FB this week. Pretty good--I will definitely add more spice if I make it again though...I prefer chops that are browned too...with maybe a crunchy topping. How did you have yours Jim and were they good? Here are mine just before going into the oven:

THe recipe called for Acorn squash but that is too boring!

Well--I had to take a picture of this:
46457_img_4048.jpg

Yes that is my horse again!!! I am itchy and welted from picking burrs once again. I am renting a brush mower and will mow all that down next week...this is ridiculous! He is sporting a new hairdo. I decided to roach his mane so that there wouldnt be so much for them to stick to! He looks like a quarterhorse now!

Hey I had a surprise when I went out this morning. Here is Mama hen with her fourth clutch for the year!
46457_img_4045.jpg

THe light chick is just huge! THis afternoon I heard some peeping from the yard where she was and I found another two chicks that had hatched and fallen from the nest into the hay feeder. One was dead but the other one I tucked underneath her. I wonder if she was just staying in that spot all day waiting for the other chicks to jump down? Her nest was tucked under the huge mound of hay in the barn open to the outside and above the hay rack. I have no idea how she got in and out of there for 3 weeks!

Well I need to get outside and turn my horse loose. I had grand plans of going for a ride after supper but I am too beat! Maybe I will go for a morning ride....Sweet dreams! Terri O
