Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

She sure is hatching those chicks late in the year. Good thing its abnormally warm, for now.

Tiki, I'm pretty sure the silkie/cochin I got from you is a rooster. The darn thing puffs up and jumps at my hand when I try to pick it up.

Thanks Elaine... she loves her chickens. Can i ask for your pear butter receipe... sounds wonderful! And I have a bunch of ugly pears that need the skin taken off so good for these things!

OMG Jim you are too funny!!
FT- Can you bring me one of your lav split orp bantam roos?? AND one of Jims ameracauna pullets.. I seriously need one that lays colored eggs.. mine lays boring light brown ones...

TO- speaking of making horses look purdy.. I gotta do that tomorrow to Prince.

I made Chicken and Sausage Jambalya for dinner tonight... good stuff and enough left over for Dear H to take to lunch on Thurs.
I went with Joan to pick up her gelding from the trainers.. he is such a good horse.. HE NEEDS his own person.. he has had a month long of giving lessons, 90 days pro training.
And she only wants the cost of his training, or close to it, about 1200.. His mane when unbraided is down almost to his leg, maybe lower. He is double registered...
sigh, what a great horse!!

So I will probably have a spare frizzle bantam rooster, or my blue rooster I got.. HE just does NOT get along with anyone it seems.. I put him in the big stall with all the big chickens..
I also have a lonely -ish golden sea bright, do you think I should try to put her in with my seramas??? I have enlarged the little chick area since I only have the two cross bred chicks and the two seramas.
Night!
Carol

WCC I'll have to meet up with Jim to get the Ameraucana's. The bantam lav split roos I have are cochins not orps.

Sure with the glass on our truck cap didn't shatter !!! I'm going to have to take the car down to Racine and put the chickens in the back seat!! I figure I would bring them to Madison with me on Friday unless I leave early enough on Thursday and meet up with you or TO on the interstate to drop off the birds. I still wanna meet up Friday to see your critters though.

Well, just got done with ham, tatoes and corn for supper, now time to tend to my silkies. Tomorrow another long day. My Aunt and Uncle want to meet up in Rhinelander for Lunch, 30 miles one way, then come back home, then go pick up chicken feed 45 miles in the opposite direction !!
th.gif
I really didn't want to go to Rhinelander tomorrow, with the weather being so nice I'd like to just stay home but they are in their late 80's and he is 90, still drives. I hate to not go, you never know !
So Thursday and Friday I swear I'm staying home !!!! I'll have to disconnect my own car battery. With my memory these days I'll forget that I did it and won't be able to go anyplace !!!
gig.gif

Oh and I've got a new trend to start too. How about feathers sticking out of the bottom of your pants leg ???? Yes, I tucked some feathers in my pants again tonight !!!
lau.gif
Ok Jim, the reason I did it in the first place was after I pulled the whole rear end feathers off the guinea by accident I wanted to save the feathers but didn't want to break the quills or damage them by putting them in my pockets. Remember it was a huge huge hunk of feathers !!
And I had to start rounding up the guineas for the night so that is why I tucked them between my undies and my jeans !!! After all the running around chasing guineas I forgot about them and later that night found them everywhere !!!
lau.gif

Anyway tonight I saw some beautiful stripped feathers, pokadotted guinea feathers on the ground so I started picking them up. Then I decided to start picking up apples on the ground to give to the chickens. Well didn't know what to do with the feathers again so in the pants they went. Being very careful to put them on the outside of my undies and inside my jeans.
So I'm picking up apples and as I was walking I see a beautiful feather that I thought was stuck to my shoe !!! I bend down to get it and it wasn't on my shoe, it was sticking out of my pant leg !!!
lau.gif
Wondered how it got there until another one appeared. Kinda like those plastic bag dispensers that you make where you shove the plastic bags in the top and pull them out the bottom !!!
lau.gif
Well, now I guess I am a walking feather dispensor !!!
gig.gif

Reminds me of a girl I worked with. We were sitting at our desks and I looked over at her and saw something sticking out of her pant leg. Luckily for her it was just a sock and not her dirty laundry !!!
gig.gif

Chased Guineas around all night AGAIN, those white ones I got from Jim I think are the instigators !
lau.gif
Caught a few with the big fish net, a couple of others gently by their legs while they were roosting. Carried 5 at a time in the net !! AhhhHHH ! Guess you can call me the Guinea Whisperer !! I gave them all a kiss and a talkn to before I threw them into Camper #3 !!!

ETA After I dispensed the feathers out my pant leg I decided to shove them in my bra, they ought to stay there !!!

I'm back.... so tired & hurting last night I didn't even realize I didn't post!
hu.gif

Coyotes are going nuts tonight... I would say less than a 1/2 mile away! Still have a cat out
hmm.png
hope she come in soon. Ruddy's been out 3 times since 9:00 checking out the yard... good dog!

Carol... Those seramas look like like they're going to be pretty birds! Looks like you got allot of work done in those stall/coops! My girls were laying in some large flower pots.

BigZ... With all the bug eating critters around here you would think there wouldn't be an insect in sight! However, the bugs way out number all the other creatures on earth. I recently read this on a bug info site...
Recent figures indicate that there are more than 200 million insects for each human on the planet! A recent article in The New York Times claimed that the world holds 300 pounds of insects for every pound of humans.

Yep, it's a loosing battle!
hide.gif
SIS....Yep, we need to cut (at least the front) at least one more time.
hu.gif

DrH.... You ever going to get those shelves done? Seems like you were talking about them for weeks!

Kris....Cute pic of your girl and her friends.

Robin.... I feel for you and your work hours! I spent way, way too many years working at gas stations! Filled in for people who were "sick" when I was way sicker than they were, worked over 24 hours straight and been robbed more than once. Yep.... lots of stories there!
th.gif

FT.... Glad you put the "D" back in DH.... no matter what it means at the time
lau.gif
I swear you can put on more miles in a week than I do all year!
th.gif
There's a nifty little invention that's been around for years. You can put all kinds of stuff in it (even feathers) and is built into allot of clothes... it's called a pocket!
gig.gif
But then we wouldn't here of your "feather tails"
lau.gif

TO.... OMG! Your horse had a bur rug on him!!! That is about as thick as I've ever seen and I've seen some bad ones! Hope you get the bur field under better control for next year! Yep, I would have cut at that point too. What was the tail like? Good Luck with it! That white "chipmunk" chick sure is pretty...hope the one you found makes it! Hope you get a ride in!

What was with all the pork Tue.? We had pork cutlets w/mushroom gravy, potatoes and asparagus!

Things are going well getting DS#1 settled in. Talked to almost all his case workers. Still need to get some stuff from storage, it's rented in "her" name and have to go through her to get his stuff.
hmm.png
She's fairly co-operative but slow. The cat and the dog are slowly getting used to this place. They're both kinda scared of Ruddy but it's getting a bit better. Took all I had to keep from laughing this afternoon.... Ruddy snapped at Shadow and before I could even yell at him he went to his "Time out"!
lau.gif
He is trainable... just wish he'd Stop doing things that get him in trouble in the first place!

Went to the feed store today.... I think they may need to start putting defibrillators next to the check out!
ep.gif
DH is trying to think of ways to grow our own chicken food on less than an acre.
roll.png
Don't know how some of you with allot more critters are doing it. Ouch!
sickbyc.gif

Lacey and the kids are doing well.

OK.... later than I thought, must start TRYING to get to sleep sooner! Night!

Good Morning All! Did a lot of reading this morning but now all I can think of is FT transforming into some type of trans-species crossbreed.
lau.gif
I picture her riding around on her atv necked but with a million feathers glued on. People would be driving by and they'd say did you see that? Nope I didn't see nothin! Yup Cind think it has been weeks talking about those shelves. Yesterday was pretty much a bust too. Coulda put a revolving door on the end of the driveway. Had more company yesterday than I do in a month. Donny was here for an hour and I never get anything done while he's here. He's one of those people that when your walking somewhere you end up way off the intended destination. He walks right into you like one leg is shorter than the other. And he can't stand off to one side or in one place he has the uncanny knack of standing right where you have to go.
roll.png
It's like a game of chess with him. You move and so does he, always blocking your next move. I yell at him and tell him to get the he(( out of my way but that doesn't last for more than few seconds. I have 2 more braces to add and then cut the plywood THEN the shelves will be done then I will
duc.gif
about them. Headin up nort Thurs. aft.
celebrate.gif
Making B'fast burrito's and a noodle salad then cutting the lumber and restacking the shelves then mow the lawn then then then then. Yup it's time to go nort!
hide.gif
Looks like your DD loves her chickens kristip. That's so cool! Gee TO your even a good person in your dreams! Don't have time to type up that thread but assume it's for worst looking moult. Peatwo is sulking Donny didn't help. He told him he looked like a girl. His response was a low and quiet burr burr burr. Poor lil buddy. Gonna get hot today!!!!!

Good morning...yes DrH it is the worst molt contest. THe have some pretty bad looking chickens on there right now! I cant be in that contest...mine all seem to be molting slowly...wouldnt knowit for the amount of feathers laying about...WAIT! Where were you last night FT? DOnt be seeding my yard with any more feathers than I already have please!

Got up a half hour earlier today..the dogs were still sleeping! I woke them up and made them go outside...not often I get to wake THEM up! Yesterday they were howling at 8--or maybe that was the day before? Supposed too go to lunch with BFF. We were planning on going to Mariachi--a really good Mexican place in town but my stomach is a rumblin' this morning....not too sure I should be going anywhere if you know what I mean!
sickbyc.gif

I tried to catch my one remaining loose pigeon last night. Wouldnt you know he was roosting above the swampy place on the shed. I didnt have proper shoes on to go in there so I left him out....havent been down today yet to see if the owl got him or not! He was tucked into the eve pretty good....

I think I am going to put some beans in the SC today and can them up later in the day. They are so quick to use then and so much better and cheaper than the canned ones in the store.

I made vanilla pear butter this year...the house smelled WONDERFUL! What I did was clean up the pears and chop them up. (I actually used my squeezo so I skipped this step) Put them into a slow cooker with a vanilla bean that you have opened and scraped. Cook on hi with the cover ajar so the liquid evaporates. After it cooks down a bit add sugar to taste. Switch to low and let her cook until it's done. That's it! No burning on the bottom. THe site said to check for fruit butter doneness you take a little amount and put it on a plate. After a little bit if it doesnt have a watery ring around it then it is ready. I canned my apple butter this year but froze the pear...I ran out of jars! Oh yeah, I added a little cardamom to mine...I like that with pears.

Looks like it's going to be a nice day! Wonder if I will get anything done?

Have a good one! Terri O

Well I typed a lengthy message last night and POOF -- it was gone! hate that! I'm going to start typing my messages in my email program and then copy and insert onto BYC - otherwise it's too frustrating for me.

Pear Butter: I don't follow a recipe because it's so simple. I do check online recipes to get reminded of what spices to use. A lot of recipes call for sugar and I never add it as I think it makes it way too sweet (like eating straight sugar.) Yesterday I processed a grocery bag of pears. Here's what I did.

Add a little bit of water to the bottom of the crockpot - just enough to cover the bottom and turn it on low.

Wash, peel and core pears. Use a melon ball maker for the coring - that makes it super fast and efficient without a lot of waste. Some pears have a really grainy texture to them. Generally you can see it as a circle around the seeds, you want to take that out, too, so your pear butter isn't grainy. Melon baller accomplishes both at the same time!

Cut up the cored pears into the crock pot & add cover. When the pears have cooked enough to soften, take a potato masher to them, or you can also run them through your food processor or use a hand mixer. Sometimes I like it chunky other times I make it smooth like baby food. (If the pears have too much liquid, just remove the cover and let them cook longer and the excess will evaporate.) After they were cooked the way I wanted them, I turned the crockpot off and added 2 teaspoons of cinnamon and 1/4 teaspoon of ground cloves. Super easy & delish!

Elaine

P.S. TO your pear butter soumds good, too!

good morning all, I have a little work outside to do..

2 quail hatched.. otherwise it is quiet in the bator.. I am wondering if anything else is going to hatch.. Annie and I are wondering if the two quails that were so beat up that we put into a different cage, didn't happen to be both of the roosters..?

are quail hens like black widows ?

good news from a lady I sold some americauna chicks to... Hers are laying blue eggs.. I am still waiting.. all of mine seem to be stunted .. i never saw such slow growing. slow maturing chickens.. I am not messing around with them in the future..
when these are gone, they're gone....

DrH, doesn't it seem that the simplest job can take forever to get done ? Like me bringing that trailer load of lumber around the garage to the front ? 5 minutes, tops. but it still isn't done.

I just told Annie how lucky you Southerners were, Pear trees.. I tried some but they just don't make it up in the Nort',, She just went out to pick the grapes.. then it is wine time.. grape and blackberry.. I should have made some rhuebarb, but I didn't.. I still have a few bottles left..

for the next bash we should bring some of the ho-made wines.eh?

..........jiminwisc..........
