Why not just let her go broody, continue to take the eggs away everyday. She will come out of it on her own. You are dealing with mother nature here. What kind of chicken is it again?

Maybe put some none fertile eggs under her and keep removing the fertile ones. After she realizes they arent'going to hatch she will give up.

I personally don't break up a broody hen. Do make sure she is eating and drinking however.

Good Luck.

Carol= yes we can chat tomorrow. I am home with the kids. Only outing I might do is to town to grab hay from my friends house.
FT- I guess I am not sure how long she could be broody. Almost a month now and I am not sure how much she is eating/drinking. She is a 6/7 month old Buff Orp. She lost her litter mate at 18 weeks. She does not have fertile eggs since we have no rooster- is it normal to be broody (without being a silkie lol) without a rooster. Sorry still new to chickens so figuring it all out.

Hoping to have a bigger coop in next year or two and then have a roo and more chickens of course!! Loving my hens

Totally normal. Some breeds are known to be broody and Orps are one of them. Alone with Silkies and cochins and I'm sure tons of others.
It ia a natural instinct to go broody. Has nothing to do with loosing a littermate or being exposed to a rooster or not. If they lay eggs they want to sit.
You can take her off the nest and put her by the food and water a couple times a day. Broody hens can get thinner but most of the time they do get up and eat and drink without problems. Just keep an eye on her. As long as you aren't trying to hatch just take her off the nest to eat and drink.

Good evening!
FT said..."Check out this mummy pizza recipe!" I only saw regular pizza...no mummy and no yummy...and no recipe either! What did you mean?
Hi again Kris...sorry that I havent checked with my neighbor about the lop yet...is it OK if the bunny has one ear up and one down? I know that my B&W lop is the Daddy but I think his are regular rabbits. Mine lookd just like the one FT sent the pic of but with black instead of butterscotch. Cute rabbit! I think the problem is that you gave her "baby" aspirin...I dont think that is aspirin any more...just give her a tablet right down the throat...should break the fever! I just read what FT said about letting her be broody if she wants to be broody. I have a white hen that was broody for her 4th week last week...this week she is off doing chicken things. She sure kept the plastic egg in "her nest" nice and warm for that month...I think they do eventually figure it out...some get pretty darn skinny while doing it though!
Nice garlic Elaine...I hope yours grows just as pretty ! Mine is always TINY! what did she do with the wood ashes? Could you elaborate please?
Raiq--we have 2 standard pear trees and I agree that it is very hard to harvest any that are higher than 15' or so. The trees were here when we got the place though so we didnt have a choice...I would definitely go with dwarfs if I were to do it over again!

I am kinda feeling like one of you night owls tonight! I had a friend stop over at 5:30. We talked non-stop for three and a half hours!!! (I know that is hard to believe) She is the one that brought that Morgan horse here for me 2 Januarys ago. Her therapist told her that until she "made it right" with me she would never be able to move on with her life. She was very broken up about doing what she did to me and actually thought I would belittle her or be so mad I would punch her or something! Me! Well, hate to disappoint anyone but I am just NOT like that at all! So we had a great talk and hopefully will see each other again soon. She also wants to pay me what she owes me and for what I have into the horse and get her back. I think that will be a whole bunch of money...stay tuned for the next episode!

So yesterday I found out that my daughter's friend had her baby and named him Phoenix Scott. (I think it sounds like a movie star) Today I was telling my elderly gentleman the baby's name and he said, "Kleenex Scott?" Oh yeah...you are right Jim, You just cant make this stuff up!

BTW...welcome back! I sure hope it wasnt me that criticized you...I would hate to see you get MEAN!

I do like a bit of ribbing though...all in good fun I say!

With that I think I will hit the hay...I get to cook tomorrow and I have no idea why I made such a complicated meal! I think I will go for easier ones from now on! THe shopper person doesnt realize that I cook from scratch and it is hard to make some of the recipes I list with nothing to make them with! Example: I listed mushroom chicken chili...yeah, she didnt get any mushrooms. See what I mean?

Nighty-night and sweet dreams to all! Terri O

(PS) one of the son's of a client got me an "Extraordinary Chickens" calendar for a little present today! It has GREAT pics! What a sweet heart!

TO - I bartered ash wood not wood ash. We had an ash tree cut down and I gave her most of it but kept a bit back for camping, backyard fires, etc. It just sat in the corner of the lot since it was cut and I wanted it gone... Sorry for the confusion.

Thanks Elaine I will look into that. I'll check with my supplier and see if they have any left. (funny story~ One year I tried planting garlic from the groery store.
tongue.png
That didnt get too far. Yeah they put some chemicals on it to keep it from sprouting I guess.

) Maybe I could get some organic garlic from the Just Local Foods store. My Chard has pretty much wilted away after this last weeks weather. Maybe I will put some plastic over it and see if it grows back. Mmmmmm love that in eggs with onions.

I dont like how the hens get so thin when they are broody, especially in the fall/winter. Last winter I had a silkie pullet who must have been broody at least 2 months. Cheese!!!! I broke her up every day twice a day. Just couldnt get her to use those legs. Boy did she get thin. You could also try getting a chick from somewhere and slipping under her when she is sleeping.

on the calender. I was checking out one of their books at the library. They have some really awesome chicken pictures.

Sounds like that rice pudding of yours is really good.

what a game, last one tomorrow.. we want texas to win..

I found a pair of blue laced red wyandottes up in Winter.. I contacted the people.. sent them a photo of my rooster to make sure we were talking same breed.. I offered to trade a pair of royal palms for the chickens.. the woman replied to me that it could possibly be a trade. but she started her reply, "Our rooster is much prettier than yours." what the heII ? I wasn't challenging what her rooster looked like.. I just didn't want to drive 200 miles for the wrong kind of chicken.. I deleted her emails and will find some hens somewhere else.. and she can go to heII for her royal palms..I wanted only hens anyhow.. BTW I was going to butcher her rooster .. Mine gives me pullets..

going to get a snack and a beer and head to bed..

butchering here tomorrow. and then going to Edgar for butchering on Saturday// then on Sunday going to make some horseradish sauce..

I had an Italian sausage venison patty on a toasted English muffin today.. Brent's recipe.. awesome good !!!! I made one for Mom too.. she ate the whole thing !! normally she takes about 3 bites and she is "too full to eat anymore"..

I think my snack just might be another one.. Yeah, that's it..

..........jiminwisc...........

BBP...
Maybe I have blood hungry chickens because I've been feeding Purina feeds. They don't have any animal products. I only bought Flock Raiser because I get a discount where I work. I prefer Kent feeds. Something with a little fish meal is nice.

We don't have Kent feed here (that I know of) But yea, Layana is for when you can't get to the better stuff. I like animal protein too! So many people don't realize chickens are omnivores! If they don't get the right protein they will find it "other places" which means if they can't free range... it could mean other chickens! That's a hard lesson for new chicken owners to learn!

kris...I tried plastic eggs with my broody, with her it didn't take long to figure out but I hear it works with some. But then she's a stubborn broody! Last spring she went broody 4 times in 3 months! I finally just gave her some fertile eggs

Good luck!

BigZ.... I love venison no mater how old! Bambi is nice and tender but a big buck has more flavor! I don't mind a slightly "gamey" taste, If it taste too much like beef.... what's the point? Sausage, is a good way to use tough meat but I also like to can it. When you can it it gets nice and tender and is great in stew or a strogenoff (sp?)!

Jim... I used to chuckle at my mom when she did dumb stuff like put her purse in the fridge... She said "You laugh now but some day..." I said "yep, I know, that's what I'm laughing about!"

Hubby came home and said someone asked if we have any meat chickens, they would like 5 dressed, if we had them

I need a much bigger coop! I didn't even get meaties for us because I didn't have the room! At least DH is looking for extra coop space!

Good Morning All! Glad your back Jim! I too hope it wasn't something I said

Best thing you can do is ignore me. Most people do. BCC good to hear your alive!
ya.gif
We miss ya on here! Along with a lot of other people Hint Hint! Even though I was busy yesterday it didn't seem like I accomplished much. Sat down at the end of the day and realized I couldn't cross anything off my list. Maybe the list wasn't detailed enough.
