Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

good whatever, PM ? No, I am not going to Fondy on Sat.. If you go, find me an India Blue Peahen.. Not more that $75.oo.. would like it if she is old enough to lay eggs next spring..

Yes , about the women on C-list.. they call themselves something or other farm..

We butchered 3 Tom turkeys and 2 roosters.. Elvis is no longer in the building.. I am going to have to find a larger scalding pot for turkeys.. I just barely had room to swish the biggest boy around.. the plucker handled even the large one very well..

Now, until one or more of them starts to strutt, we have about 7 hens left,, and old Tom and about 10 juveniles..
Now, without those rebelious young toms , all the turkeys went into the coop without being chased, tonight..
The 9 geese are always last to go in.. I just clap and hollor and they go in..
One of the peahens goes in with the turkeys and the other one goes in with the guineas..

my most recent batch of quail eggs are showing no sign of hatching,, thae last batch is due on Nov 1 along with the maran eggs..

well i better get to bed,, have to be up by 8 AM.. a guy is coming to pick up the plucker for the weekend..

Hi All!

BCC... I noticed you... just didn't have anything to say

sorry

BBP.... You were worried about mixing an 800 lb batch? Don't remember how many chickens you have... but that's only 16 bags of pre-made.

tiki... even in areas where CWD is prevalent, it is rather rare. Oddly, even deer with CWD can be consumed if processed properly. It is only a danger to other members of the deer family (moose, elk, etc.) and not to humans or other animals. They only want you to send the head in for testing if you suspect it may have CWD and that is only to track and keep records of the
disease. The reason they want to eradicate herds that have CWD is so it dose not spread to healthy herds, and thinning healthy herds means less chance that members of a healthy herd will wonder into infected areas. Hope that helped.
Wow, that was a close call on the cat meds! Dukes tranquillizers didn't knock me out... but I was tired!

Jim... did you wind up taking a "nap" then couldn't sleep again? I hate that when I do that! Well, hope you got up in time to get the plucker out to that guy.

Well, Jasmine I think is over her broodiness! She was off the nest and on the roost when I went to close up. I promised her she could hatch some eggs in the spring.

It was kind of early but I let the new bird I got from Jim "out" in the shed part and the door to the shed blew open so they got to mingle a bit. Guess they join the flock soon.

Well, nothing more "new"... just busy.

Night All!

Along with that naughty fm, was just thinking about her very creative pumpkins. Hint Hint! So many great people have disappeared. So many only check in once in awhile. I truely miss them. I have a pretty good idea why so many are AWOL.

But it is an open forum so anything goes.

Can I say "hi" if I'm not technically from Wisconsin? I live in Minnesota, but just over the border near Hastings, and it doesn't seem as though Minnesota's board is as active... so hi!

And I'm kind of passively looking for hens to buy, as I figure some of us are de-flocking for the winter. I'm adding on to my coop space, so I have room for more, but I'm super particular about what I want and haven't found anything yet (been checking Craigslist about every day...). I'm looking for good dual purpose hens, preferably heavier ones like Cornish (I need to breed in a little more meat). I don't need roosters- I have two great ones.

Yeah, good frosty morning. I forgot to check the weather last night and when my DH got home (well after dark) he mentioned it was going to get down to like 25. I have a still flourishing patch of frost hardy greens- kale, chard, spinach, etc, but I keep meaning to cover it with plastic and forgetting. I worried that 25 would be too cold for even the hardiest, so I ran out in the freezing dark and covered them. Brrr! My plan (if they survived last night- they were pretty frozen when I got down there) is to keep them alive as long as possible so we can keep eating fresh greens.

And speaking of cold, I have a silkie who decided to go broody two days ago. I gave her two barred rock cross eggs to hatch, but I'm wary. 1) it's cold and getting colder. 2) this is my first broody hen. 3) I tried to move her out of the coop and into a dog crate in the garage and she wasn't having it- she wouldn't sit on the eggs (different eggs) and just stood there for like a day. But as soon as I put her back in the coop she went straight back to sitting (on nothing, BTW). So I gave her the two eggs she has now. Her nest is in the back corner of the coop behind the water, on the ground. She nests there with the other two bantams. But I'm worried that she won't be able to defend the chicks from the bigger chickens once they hatch. We'll see- I may end up moving them after they hatch. I did notice yesterday that she seems to be co-brooding with my red frizzle bantam, which is totally cute.

Morning all, Tiki I'd say he ought to be grateful you show up at all !!! 800-1000 birds to vacinate is ALOT !!! Try not to spill since I'm sure you won't have much left to spare !! lol

Thanks for playing the game, btw you can't change the words, ie toast to toasted, just keep a word and add a word. So I'll fix it and here we go again.

I want to see the creative pumpkins !!!!

good morning, No, I was not in bed.. I was still up this morning..
and no, I did not get up when the guy picked up the plucker. Annie offered to get me up, but he said he could load it himself.. I heard his truck start when he left , that's when I got up.. excellent timing on my part, eh?..

we don"t take into account how old a turkey is.. Royal palms do not get very big.. When it is obvious that we have too many Toms,, Off with their heads !! at 5 months, we would be luck to have one dress out over 10 pounds.. They are not plump and round like the butterballs in the stores.. They are more torpedo shaped like the wild ones.. But they do not have that gamey turkey flavor like the store bought ones.. I do not like turkey, but my mouth waters when I think of eating one of the RP's..

Brandislee, I used to live in Rochester , and then moved to Pine City to go to "Hobo College".. That is what they used to call the Voc Tech here in Wausau, because it was right next to the railroad tracks.. I have an associates degree in Mechanical Drafting from Minn.. It doesn't matter if you are not a Packer backer, we need somebody to pick on.. watch out for TO (TerriO) though.. I think she is a passionate football fan..

don't worry about your hen and chicks.. clucks have a natural ability to act mean..

I hear Sally upstairs.. gotta go.. we are going to make horseradish sauce today.. the first time for both of us..
