Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

happy vets day .. I wasted the whole day.. felt good aboout it too..

I went to Menard's and bought a small ceramic heater for the chicken coop.. I want to make it just warm enough so that the water doesn't freeze.. I didn't think the built in thermostat would keep it cool enough, so the clerk showed me a thermostat that I didn't even know existed..it is called a (thermostatically controlled outlet).. It is like a two plug adapter that you plug into the outlet and then it has two outlets that control two heaters.. it has a built in thermostat that goes on at 35F and off at 45F..

I have the heater running now in my basement computer room.. It started out at 64F.. after 5 minutes it is up to 69F already ..Usually the incubators keep it warm down here, but they are not running any more this winter..
It just shut off and it is 70F.. less than 10 minutes ..

the heater was under $18.oo and the thermostat was just under 10.oo..

tomorrow I will set this up in the chicken coop.. If I like it, I will buy another one for the lean-to coop..

Hi all! Happy Veteran's Day to all of our great men and women that have served our country!

Jim--that is called a "thermo-cube" I have read about them on here before. Wanted to get some last year to keep my heaters a bit more efficient...less than 10 bucks!? I am going to check our Menard's tomorrow...The cheapest I found them on line for last year was $14--that would be ideal to not have to pay shipping either! I will be making the rounds tomorrow to pick up feed at TSC (worked so darn late today that I wasnt able to get my order in at my mill) I had to go to my neighbor's place and "steal" some corn for my waterfowl tonight! I couldnt remember where he had the corn so I got some steer feed--the geese liked it anyhow...maybe they will taste more like beef now?
gig.gif

Amy--was your pic the October one or the August one? Both were on that link and I wasnt sure that you had Polish...both pics were really nice though....

I hope it is a 2N that you wanted DrH! That was a very interesting site BIgZ--even though I am not really into tractors it was neat to see all the pics! Such a lot of $$$ invested in old things! My neighbor that has old John Deer stuff sold one of his old "rust piles" for 10 grand I believe! After his barn burnt down he needed cash and said he sold it for less than it was worth?
ep.gif
Yup--there certainly is some money in that stuff...wish I had one buried in my barn...

Glad you Vets took it easy today...you deserve it! Have a nice night and sweet dreams to all! Terri O

Henferno--is a white buttercup the same?...Can you call it a BUTTERcup?

OOPS, I forgot to say Happy Veterans Day to all you Vets. This is a special Day for those of you that have given so much for our freedom. Thank- YOU... Hope you had a grand day!

Refresh my memory Amy....did you get your polish from sandhill? If you did, how did they turn out to be in regards to layers....just wondering.

I'll have to check out those heaters Jim. It seems like a fair price for those. I wonder what the life is compared to a infared lamp? I carried water most of the winter last year. Sure would be nice not to have to do so often though.

I need tires for the back on my ranger. You can't find any lug or off road tire in 14" any where, so I'm thinkin I'll just get 2- 15" rims because you can find tires anywhere in 15's. Anyone know what the junk yards are charging for rims? I knew I'd miss those rims I let go when I junked my old ford with 15" rims that i thought I'd never need. Dang it anyway.

Glad you figured out what N you have Doc.

Be Safe, Have Fun... bigz

Well, I'm back !!!!

Jim you obviously don't sit down and study all of the Livestock catalogs like Jeffers do you???? Those thermo cubes also come with different temperature settings. They have one that works for summer temps too.

I have some of the thermo cubes, now for the life of me I can't remember if we used them. I think we did. We plugged the heat lamps into them that we hung above the waterers.

Yesterday I got a good deal on a 3 gallon waterer at the junk store called Peaceful Valley in Antigo. They buy overstock etc. They also buy all of Foster & Smith's returned and damaged items.

The woman didn't know how much to ask so I offered $5.00 for it. She called the owner and he didn't know what she was talking about. Anyway I said how about $6 and she said ok.
It sells for $20 at FleetFarm. It has a bent water tray but no biggie.

A few months ago I got a heated water hose there for $25. They sell for around $100 elsewhere. It still looked brand new, unopened.
Bad part about that place is there are no returns.
I saw they had a real nice large size George Forman Grilll for $10. We loved ours until it quit heating. I read the sticker on it that was from the store they got it from and the original price was $99. Then in small print it said that it "WON"T HEAT" !!!! WTH and they would sell it to you for $10. What would you do with it ??? So you have to watch what you buy there. They have alot of out dated pet supplies so you have to look at the expirations on them ad decide if you still think it would be good. I love going to that store, it is like going into your garage, never know what you will find.

Tonight we went to Fleet Farm. Picked up two game cams. One is the Moultrie 55 with a flash so I can get colored night time pictures and the other one is called a truth cam. Instead of infrared it has black light or ??? So there is no flash or red lights so it is good for using on people !!!! Thought if I start putting my eggs out front (if I ever get any) I would set it out and see just how honest my neighbors really are !!! LOL

Oh TO btw, can you send pictures and instructions on how you make those cookie tin water warmers please???? What size bulb do you put in there?

Can anybody reccommend a Homeowner company that will insure a hobby farm ????? Still looking.

I went to Crandon to deliver some eggs today. Had to back the car all the way out the long drive since we didn't plow and our driveway is getting narrower and narrower !!! I made it fine.
When we went to Antigo to Fleet Farm, DH drove, backed all the way out the driveway and kept backing before he turned !!! Got stuck in the snow bank across the road !!!! Wouldn't normally be a problem but because we are on a hill it was just steep enough for no traction on the front. So I had to climb out into the snowbank and get in the drivers seat so DH could push us out !!! I told him to hop in, I'll drive, I wanted a peaceful trip to town. His driving is well let's just say is scarey !!!

All the goats and ponies are getting along great and so are all of the new peafowl. I got the valbazen dewormer in the mail. I'm going to deworm them all seperately, that ought to be fun !!! I already have a start on my peafowl feather collection. When we were trying to get them out of the carrier I reached in and grabbed onto one hen, pulled out tons of her feathers (by accident) they came out so easy !! Poor girl !!

Well, gonna try to get to bed early tonight. I couldn't sleep last night, my neuropathy in my hands and arms was driving me nuts. It gets worse from driving !!!
I was really out of it this morning though when DH got up to go hunting. I asked him if he "liked the pumpkin pie"? He said "I didn't get any pumpkin pie !!" Then I said, "Me either ! " "There wasn't any !!!" LOL
lau.gif
Have no idea where that came from. Normally I only talk that goofy when I've taken an Ambien !!!

Ok, night all unless I think of something else that I just have to say !!! Oh yes and Happy Vetrans Day !! Oh and Congrats Amy, nice picture !!!

I know what you mean about "mom of everything" then if you "remind" too much your "nagging"

Amy... congrats!!! But yea, was it Aug. or Oct.?

Jim... glad you decided to "bundle up" for winter!
wink.png
yep, I think one of those cubes would come in handy! My chickens for winter have a heated dog bowl. I set it on cement blocks, worked good last year. For a "warm spot" I have an old oil filled heater I'll screen off like I did last year. Only problem is the coop is different so I'll have to find a new spot. Not warming the whole coop, just an area for them to "thaw out" in!

DrH... Glad you wood pile is going so well! As hot as DH likes it it'll be a wonder if we get through the winter! The free stuff we got from my son's neighbor got split pretty big so we'll have some good "long term" logs. We'll even have to "shave" a few down so the fit in the stove! That pallet wood is working good for getting a good hot fire going... just what I planed!
tongue.png
Gotta hug those good birds now and them
love.gif
Wish I had more time for that.

FT... sounds like you got some good deals! Years ago there was a store like that around here.... I miss it! Hope you catch something good on those cams!

As a repeat of yesterday... Not much to say here either however I do have a question. That guinea with the ouwie is hanging on. It eats and drinks well but is still badly swollen just under the eye and is pushing at the eye. I have it on Tetracycline Hydrochloride but am wondering if I should change to a different antibiotic. If so what and how much?

Here's some of the captions...

From DrH... "Are you listening to me? I don't think you ever listen to what I say. Cackle Cackle Cackle! "

TO... "Hey Whitey, I'm feelin' frisky tonight....(whispered)" The red in the back is saying, "Gloria, you are such a tramp! Be quiet and go to sleep!"

Amy..." Hey buddy, you better start laying some eggs before you end up in freezer camp. OR Whitey was beginning to think living in the henhouse was for the birds."

I was thinking... "I saw you with Lizzy today! You told me I was the only one! What dose she have that I don't?!" Lizzy in the back... "B!tch"

or...Her: "Did you scratch up that area I told you to? I didn't see YOU crow when that hawk went over!!! Where did you go this afternoon? Do these feathers make my butt look big?...."
Him: "B!tch"

I think we should do this now and then...what do you think?

Good Morning Everyone! Cind you gave me the morning chuckle. Do these feathers make my butt look big?
lau.gif
Was fine last night but woke up at 4 with a back ache I know the culprit it was a big forked block that was very hard to roll over onto the splitter even in the bucket. Ibu is helpin. Hope it loosens up I want to get more split today. Looks like a beautiful day in store hope everyone can get out and get some sun while it lasts! Found out yesterday that Btwo does not like being interupted in the nest box. WOW did I gret screamed at. She without a doubt Bit*hes daughter.

good morning, yeah, thermo cubes.. apparently everybody knows about them but me.. It was a well kept secret.

should be a nice day today.. going to pick all of the brussel sprouts for Annie..

a guy is supposed to come at 1PM to pick up the tractor snow bucket. He better show, I have been stalling other guys for him.

Sandi, I have one of those heated hoses.. the heat elemen does not go all the way to the end, so make sure you drain the water for the first 12 inches.. I also found that if you hang the hose and coil it, then tuck the end into the coil, it won't freeze shut.. but then, all of you prolly already know this, too..

Quote:
Nope I didnt know that !!! So you leave the hose plugged in all the time ? Makes sense.

Cind, love the captions !! Hears one to add.

" What do you mean you want to try again !!!! I just sat on that fricken nest for 28+ days and nothing !!!"
"So get off my back already !!! Besides I have a headache!"

Cind, you cold try tylan 50 or penicillin. I think the tylan 50 would be 1/4 cc injected but I have read on here that people give it orally. I know Tractor Supply carries it.

Fleet Farm, possibly Farm & Fleet carries the Penicillin G. That you would have to inject. Use a big needle cause it is very think.
I had all of this written down but can't find my notebook !!
Best to do a search. Did you post under emergency cures section? Would maybe help to post a picture of it too !!
You might want to hold her (very hard to do) and take your finger just below the eye and open the eye socket by sliding your finger down so you can see if there is anything lodged in there. Do the same thing on the upper eye lid. She may have gotten something in there like a bur or something while she way out and about. If you have any human eye soothing drops you could put that in, or saline solution. If there is something in there it would help flush it out.
Good luck with that. And as a word of caution, they are very powerful birds when trying to catch them. don't grab them by the tail, you will end up with a handful of feathers (if you do just shovve them in your pants or bra til you're done with original task
wink.png
)
You might want to do this at night so you can catch her eaiser.

I am fretting when I have to catch the peafowl, now talk about powerful !!!

That's it for now !!

I didn't know that either, Jim, about the thermo cubes or the heated hose.

I know they are pricey, but doesn't anyone use the heated base for poultry founts? They aren't cheap, but they last a long time & sure are convenient. I think it beats having to break up the frozen water all the time. Just my lowly opinion, for whatever it's worth.
hide.gif
We've been using one for about 5 years now, but we don't have nearly the amount of birds as alot of you do, so we got away with just buying one. What about those heating elements for bird baths? Would those work?

Hey, good news, everyone. Myrtle is starting to feel better. She's getting her energy back, albeit slowly. I've got her in with the bantams so she won't get bullied by the other reds. I think they were keeping her away from the food. I put some vitamins in her water, and have been putting cinnamin & some probiotics in her oatmeal, and cooking her an egg for some extra protein. So far, so good. And I really appreciate all the positive thoughts being sent her way, too. Somebody sure was right when they said that Cheeseheads are the best!

FT, that is a great caption. With that look on his face, she must be giving him the business. Yep, we're all a bunch of females on here, Doc!

Hope your back feels better.
