Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Morning All....good luck with momma CC...When that first peep pokes his head out from under mom your gonna flip!

For folks that don't know this....when you breed one pure bred to another different pure breed it's called crossbreeding and actually creates a hybrid with tons of vigor and good utility qualities. This is true for first generation breeding....now if you take one of those hens CC and breed it back to the same pure bred breed of rooster and then take one of those hens etc, and continue that series for eight generations it's called grading and will breed true again. This adds new genes to the breed....hope that made sense. It takes eight breeding cycles for this to work. Not that anyone cares...just sayen.

First froze and cracked egg this morning...I'll add it to the afternoon treat for the flock. My son gave me a package of beef tounge that's roasting for the treat today.

When in comes to electricity...I know how to plug stuff in...does that count as knowledge?

Later... bigz

Thanks for the advice on mites. I believe they're northern fowl mites. I've done 2 doses of eprinex. When it gets above freezing I'll spray down the coop, change the bedding and dust in a permethrin. I have one hen that's infested. I dusted her yesterday. What if they get on my parrotlet? Scary.

BBP that is a scary thought for sure !!! I better check my parrots too !!!

Sad news here, I lost one of my lavender split chicks. It was weak to begin with and the other chicks were heartless and stepped on it. I took it out and tryed to help it but no luck. Then one of my silkies that had gone broody I found dead on it's nest.
Well, got a phone call so gotta go. Been reading but to pooped to post !!

Will be back.

Congrats on your broody momma hatching some babies for you! Can't wait to see pictures.

Apparently my Brinesa super Ovaview has arrived, but we missed the mail carrier for signature. Will have to pick it up tomorrow. You know whats funny though... There were only tire tracks to my mailbox and not to my door where a person would have to go to get my signature... (a thick layer of snow makes detective work quite easy). Hhhhmmmm... Didn't want to get out of the car me thinks...

Don't even get me started on the lazy postal carriers. Gee, I wonder why the post office is billions of $$$ in debt? Maybe paying useless people to be even lazier, maybe?
Whenever I had a package that required a siggy, they ALWAYS had that notice on my mail saying they tried delivering it but noone was home. Ok, yes, I was home. No, you didn't try to deliver it, otherwise why are the notices mixed in my mail down at the curb & not on the front door, hmmmm?????????????? And the worst part was, it was in the summertime! I could see it happening once, maybe twice, but it was 4 times so I contacted the post office. They replied to me & said they spoke to my carrier & he swore he came to the door each time. Yeah right. And I've got a bridge to sell ya.

My Brinsea incubator is supposed to be delivered here on Monday, and it requires a siggy too. But at least it's getting delivered by UPS. That carrier rocks!

FT, I am so sorry to hear about your losses, and TO too. Can't remember if I said that already? That is so sad.

Thanks for the breeding info, Bigz. That is fascinating how they have figured all that out.

DrH, better to be little B than Queen B.

Still hearing peeping, more often & a little louder, but no little heads popping out yet.

It's been snowing like crazy out down here. Supposed to get 3-6".

So glad DH brought Alice in.

Good afternoon! Really really snowy here! DH is home early and is going out to clear the driveway...he walked in about 15 mins after me and scared the sh!t out of me! Not too used to folks walking in at 3! The truck he is using for work doent have working 4WD so he said he was "white knuckled" all the way home. Since that accident he had in January 2 years ago he is pretty paranoid about driving in icy/snowy conditions. I kind of like that because he is much more cautious driving now that he KNOWS what can happen (in a split second no less!)

SO I guess I am all alone again tonight...Hockey game again. DD25 is meeting him at the game I think and then she and DD19 and her BF are going back to the Dells...at least that is how I understood it! I am going to make my Thai soup anyhow...it will be nice to sip it tonight and watch a movie--MY CHOICE!

Now that I am warmed up from shoveling I can put my coveralls on and go and fill waterers. I shoveled just a little path and the steps to the house right when I got home. If I let the dogs out they mach it all down and it is that much harder to do! I brought a bunch of feed home from the mill too so I have to sled that down to the barn. I LOVE my ice fishing sled that I bought just for the purpose of dragging feed. I can always use it as a dual purpose conveyance if I ever get to go ice fishing too! I am glad I got the heavier duty one...I cant remember how many times it has gotten away from me and hit the gate post! Kind of hard to stop 300# of feed sliding down a hill!

Later! Terri O

Did you mention what Brinsea model you are getting CC ?

I have a new octagon advance 20 that I'm gonna use for the first time this spring. Maybe we can set a April fools day set together. That way the hatch will be close to may and warmer brooding temps in my garage. Just a thought.

Oh yes... I forgot to mention to Bigz how his breeding tidbit was very interesting! You are quite the knowledge fairy of all things chicken. If I make it to the chicken stock I will assuredly bow down to your Chicken greatness!!!
