Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

LOL..raim...not a problem. We still watched a decent flick I'm thinkin...I'll check out the new link tomorrow. You'll have to catch up with what we viewed raim!

5% seven dust BBP...remove waterers and feed from the coop first....dust the coop and the nest boxes.....use a cheap face mask and dust the flock outside if you can one at a time simply to stay upwind away from the dust residue....gonna need to repeat in 5-7 days cause of new vermin eggs hatching. Blood suckin sap suckers is truly what i call them. They live on the bird and thrive in cooler weather and can only live off the bird for a month. Keep the coop dusted a couple times a year and you won't have a problem. These are the worst vermin for the flock.. (northern fowl mite) .worse than red mites. Good Luck.

Hey all
I hate this cold BBBRRRRRRRRRRRRrrrrrrr weather, why on earth I live here is a question I ponder at this time every year........
Otherwise I love it here, I just do NOT love this below zero stuff, I'm getting too old and it takes it's toll in worry about my animals that are outside as well.
I did plug in the heat lamp and blanket the horses, the barn dog burrows in the hay, until it warms up, but I still worry very much and make myself go out every couple hours to check on everyone. My son says I'm a worry wart, but well It's my responsibility to care for them and they can't help it if mother nature is sometimes awful.... I'm seriously worried about my chickies because they are roosting now and the light is basically useless, but I left it on just in case anyone is cold and gets down to warm up. I thought about hanging it over the roosting poles, but how to make it big, as in long enough to make a difference, even if I run 2 heat lamps I don't think it would cover the entire roost. any suggestions from you old chicken farmers on how to help keep them warm? I use sawdust as bedding and there's about 6 or so inches in there, over concrete, 1/2 inch stall mats, and a layer of sand that I bed with in warm weather. we built a lean too to cover the pop door to block the wind because the door is on the west side and it's always windy here. but it's still very Ccold out there. and some of my girls are missing love feathers because my boys are rambunctious newbie Roosters. argggg
Anyway we are still kicking up here just CCCCcccccoooollllddddddddddddd....... stay warm y'all. Kim

Thanks for the bday wishes! :)

Sorry, it looks like I won't be on much any more. Even less than before. I don't know why this site is so slow for me now.....:( One page takes minutes to load! And I have Charter....and that's fast. Oh well.

Hope all is well with you. I see a few had some losses and now is the time for the mites. I still get about doz. or so a day. Even my one female duck is still laying with just natural light. But the eggs are frozen. :/ oh well. The dogs love them just the same. It's actually kinda cool! I can peel the frozen duck eggs. It's pretty cool inside. Kinda see through. Try it some time.

With it being so mild up til now, I've had a chance to clean some of the woods. Been having fires. I just love winter campfires!

Talk to you's soon!

You think you're all worried about your chickens? At least yours aren't as stupid as mine apparently are.
barnie.gif
I'm watching them right now on the cameras. One orp is up on the roost, on the opposite side from the heat bulb. My PR is in the nest box furthest from the heat bulb. My roo is sleeping on the FLOOR in the corner by the pop door. And my other orp & the non-broody aussie are both out in the carport still foraging around. It's minus frakkin' 2* out there! Stupid chickens!

My old banty roo is directly under the heat lamp, BTW. No wonder he's lived to be 9. He's actually got a clue!

Stay warm, everyone, don't stress too much about your birds, hope you get the bugs under control, so sorry about your losses and thank you all for the good luck wishes. I will TRY to get some sleep this evening. And sweet dreams, all!

I had told a long story about my friend in Rosendale...and thanks for the right link RAIM--which house was yours? Cant remember what all else...just that when I got in the first sentence I read was MLH offer to come and help...I had literally just gotten off the phone with my friend down the road who I called to see if she could pop over to help me move some sheep and goats! Since che couldnt I just rebedded with LOTS of hay and if they dont eat it all tonight perhaps any babies that are born tonight can snuggle down in....

I am heading off to bed! Sweet dreams all...Terri O

(PS) FM--there is a bunch of stuff about resetting your computer and the new system...perhaps you can check that out and rejoin us? I have charter too and the pages load immediately! I really havent seen any difference with THAT part of the site! (My frustrations lie elsewhere! LOL!)

Chilly Morning to all!

Make a temp pop door for the chickens... Also hung a 250w heat lamp high enough over the roost to cover 3/4 of the two top rails. Have not been out there yet - sun is still not up yet. My coop is just too big for only 13 chickens. I guess I'll HAVE to add a few more... LOL I've also decided that I'm gonna make two separate breeding pens (won't be part of the coop).

I was reading yesterday that mites are a BIG problem in the winter... That doesn't make any sense to me but I guess it's true. I'm gonna run out and get some Sevin today just in case.

As far as making this site go faster. Find the "Disk Cleanup" feature. I think it's under accessories when you click the start button down in the left hand corner. (I moved my Disk Cleanup button to my start-up screen - right next to the Internet button) - I also downloaded "Google Chrome" and use that as a browser instead of Internet Explorer or Firefox. It seems to run a lot faster and the Hackers don't have it figured out yet, so you don't get all the spyware...etc.

You can also download AVG - a free app (there is a version that you can pay for, I used it last year but found really no difference than the free version) I'm using the free version this year.

Between occasionally Defragging, Disk clean-up, and AVG - You will find the site runs soooo much faster than the last one. If anyone has any questions, please feel free to PM me and I'll try to walk you through it. I'm no computer expert but I;m able to keep this old (8 years) computer running pretty fast. (Knock on wood)... It's time for a new one, I know....

Not sure what's on the agenda today... Right now, it's coffee, surfing and reading the news...

Stay warm, Stay Happy !!!!!

Tom

Good Morning All! TO

it seems like goats and sheep have a high mortality rate all the time? Several of the kids sprouted tail and wing feathers last night. Oh how fast they grow! Feed jar is empty again.

Tomski have thought many times that if I ever build a cabin it's going to be as much 12V and off grid as possible. So much more and it's gone again. Sounds like jim will be on soon with all the upgrading he's doing. Anyone north of me. good news! It was 0 at sunset -10 at 9 PM, -14 at 3 AM, 0 at 6 AM, and is now +4. Must be a southerly wind. Have a long list of to do today better get goin.

I Have my garage wired with 12V lights. I use an 60w solar panel with a deep cycle BIG battery that was made to take a solar charge. I was using an inverter to convert to 110 and then using the CFL's but found that the inverter was just sucking up too much energy/wattage. So I went with the 12v florescent tubes. I also have the back shed and numerous other areas wired 12v using solar panels and the gas less deep cycle batteries.

I have a 15' flat ended "Scanoe" that I rigged with a a 80W panel, hooked to a battery that runs my 60lb thrust trolling motor ALL day long (on a sunny day) It's a blast cruising/trolling around the river in complete silence...LOL I get some pretty weird looks too. The Panel is raised up on aluminum angle stock and also acts as a shade to keep me out of the sun. Takes me about 5 min to set everything up once I get the canoe off the truck...

I love goofing around with solar... Be nice when the Panels drop a little more in pricing.

You DO need a regulator between the panel and battery though.... I learned the hard way! LOL

TO my house wasn't on the video (2miles away), but Bambo bend is in the background! It's the HOTTEST spot around to see the sturgeon roll.
also IDK how you guys (and gals) lose what you were typing? I just don't get it?
AND, lol, TO as far as HS (homeschool) goes, my 2 oldest kids go to public school and I home school the 3 younger ones. I works for us! NOW if we could just get rid of the sick bugs in this house! driving my CRAZY! pretty soon I'm gonna turn off the heat and FREEZE those buggers!

BigZ, I will have to watch that other show so I know what you guys are talking about lol
I can't WAIT till "spring" to separate all of our birds (ps I took count, 60ish) I wanna mix that frizzle with the silkie (to get a sizzle?)
