Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Sunny And Cold...How's mom doing CC? Does she have that special look in her eye? It's amazing how they actually communicate to their peeps in the shell. I hope everything goes well....

Jim said it's cold by him too. That sure doesen't suprise me!

Venzun heart roasting in the oven for the flock. Gonna cut it into small pieces and make a nice warm layer mash with the broth and meat...the flock is gonna love it for sure. They love the warm meals on cold days, just like us.

My flock also gets the cereal and the crumbs at the bottom of the potato chips too. It's funny how we love to watch them eat.

Stay Safe And Warm.. bigz

If they know that you are binging them stuff like that you'd better wear protection! My birds practically attack me when I am carrying anything that even resembles a plastic bag! Yes they will eat it, fight over it and look really disappointed when you run out! LOL!
I just heard that the FDA or somebody is trying to take Honey Smacks off of the shelves or at least change it's labeling because it is 60% sugar! Not an ideal thing to be marketing to kids! (you might take a closer look at those fruit loops and lucky charms too....)

I actually spend an hour outside with the birds today! The sun feels great...but I am sure glad I have warm coveralls! I remember going out for chores before I had them...then I started milking cows at a dairy. It was do darn cold in there before the cows came in...I did the AM shift starting at 4. This was in '99 and 2000...remember how COLD that winter was? Anyhow, all the employees had them and I broke down and got some...WOW--what a difference from just wearing jeans (even flannel lined ones!) Yesterday I had my coat unzipped cause I was sweating! Man, I think I should charge WALLS for this service announcement!

Off to make my soup...Mushroom Buckwheat. The buckwheat groats are supposed to taste like barley...we shall see! Later--Terri O

Sunny & cold here too. No glint in the eye yet. Just a whole lot of broody stink.

She's looking a little pale in the face, comb & wattles, though. I'm not liking that at all. She hasn't eaten or drank too much lately, or crapped, for that matter. She was liking her oatmeal & banana, but not today. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that all goes well. I set up a brooder box just in case too.

yes I heard that about Honey smacks this week actually... maybe that is why my friend gave it to me. Yes I refuse to do the chocolate cereals so they feel like it is candy... but lucky charms ( the #1 cereal in our household) has whole grains with those marshmellows so actually one of the better ones of the sweet ones. My kids only get cereal 2 times a week and those are the mornings I have to go to work and cant make them a nice breakfast. I like to fill those bellys before they get to school. Next year will be tough when they are in school full days and I will be working 4 days instead of 2. Gotta get back to the real world. And my kids dont like oatmeal... so they get lots of eggs and french toast. There is a reason there is a big demand from friends for my eggs and never enough to sell. We keep a dozen adn a half eggs for us and one to sell each week. Of course we will see how this summer goes now that I have 8 big girls ( 5 bantys of which only one is laying every other day for me right now) and we want to add a few more. Maybe I will warm up some milk and add a little to some cereal for the girls. That will make a nice warm mash and they may forgive me for closing the door.

Ah-h-h-h! Finally got caught up. Durned computer was down since Friday night. I've been having withdrawal pangs for 5 days now.

Got back on line this morning 'bout 10 and I've been trying to catch up on all the backlog of mail since about noon.

You all are important! This is the first subscribed thread I've bothered with yet. Got three others with 5 days missed. Sigh!

It's cold here down south, too. Getting out to the chickens hasn't been a problem 'cuz spouse is keeping a path open for me. I'm more afraid of falling than freezing so I really appreciate his efforts.

Silly girls rushed out when I stopped by to check for eggs (4 and still warm) a while ago. Then the pushing and shoving got rough. Once out, everyone did an about face and came back into the coop. Good! I'll probably be back out again today, but it's nice to know they are already 'put away' for the night if I don't.

Rusty Rabbit got a graham cracker treat, so he was happily munching away. He has no intention of traipsing outside in this kind of weather.

It is going to be cold again tonight. Perhaps our first below zero temps. Sure will be glad when the January thaw hits south-est, central-est Wisconsin.

Yep..I gotta comment on the insulated coveralls....mine hang by the backdoor inside the house and are used daily through winter. I wore out the wells I had makin firewood...in the springtime a couple years ago fleet had a sale on the Bernie Brand...really warm and tough as nails. I could never live without them.

They get pretty pale and light weight during the brood....it's a ton of fun to watch mom give her babys food with that special language they use, especially when the treats start coming there way.Scrambled eggs with the starter ration is a favorite first one around here. Getting cited for you CC!

I'll check out your link later raim...the grandkids are stopping for one of the pies SIS made today.

Later...bigz

Stopping in to warm up! Made some pasta for the gang, some odds n ends that weren't enough for a meal. They loved it!

I didn't bother letting them out so with the coop closed up all day and those south windows, the coop was a nice 39* at 2:00.

Sissy didn't eat on her own yet today but I got some down her. She just wants to sleep.

DH took a vacation day today for an appointment and get some stuff done. He went to Bristol and picked up some of that free cut scrap wood. Came home with a shipping crate full! He said it's easier for them to put a crate full on the truck so the last 2 loads we got the shipping crate too! *Think mini coops, brooders, storage!
ya.gif
* Cool... free wood AND project material! He figures he can get 1 a week! I like free! To keep on good terms with the crew there he said he was going to bring them some goodies from work now and then.

Speaking of stuff from DH's work....He brings out dated cereal and other stuff the chickens would like. They love those treats!

Catch you all later!

Thank you so much for sharing some of your wisdom, Bigz. I got the newbie jitters for sure. I've been checking on her every hour, prolly driving her batty.

Mom is eating better now. DH stopped to pick up some chick starter & a few other things so I tossed a small handful in her food bowl. She really liked it, but amazingly didn't garbage it all down. She seems to be pacing herself, which is probably a good thing. I shall continue to keep you all updated.

Mmmmm, that soup sounds tasty, TO! Can I come for dinner?

Here she is, complete with a bald spot thanks to Moose (that is why my girls now have aprons) and a little oatmeal on her beak. Piggy.

Nice pic of mom CC..thanks for sharing. She sure is lucky to have you guys under management. I think she gonna be extra spoiled after this. I know about that special broody fragrance
th.gif

Gonna be worth it though for sure!

I closed the pop hole in the covered run coop. I'll check on them early tomorrow and get that door open...just not quite the perfect ventilation that works best, in that coop...seems either to drafty when I open vents or to stuffy...works great with temps above 0 and the pop left open. This is nasty cold tonight.

Off to read raims link. bigz
