Where's my late night buddy? FT... are you sleeping?

Good Icy/Snowy Morning Everyone! KNA I've had hens lay twice in one day but they were pretty far apart. She's definitely not egg bound. Have to get the Ford started today one way or another. Flooded the crap out it all day yesterday might have to pull the plugs to clean them. Bf4 isn't that cool when they respond to you! Makes ya feel special.

I started my day on a very sad note. lil B died last night. Think she got trampled.

Sucks! Bf4 losses are hard on a caring person but it happens. All you can do is your best. Then all the second guessing begins. Should I have done this or that? You beat yourself up all the time. Hope you can handle it!

Good morning! Looks like the January thaw is on! THe poop in the yard is becoming visible...
sickbyc.gif
I better get out and do some scooping soon...while it is still kinda frozen--those of you with dogs know how gross it is in spring....
So sad to hear about lil B DrH! Sure was a cute one...it is hard when you are the smallest of a bunch for sure! I hope you get your tractor running today...should go--sure is warm enough here!

AngieB you are absolutely right about the crack "disappearing." As the contents of the egg thaw they shrink down and the crack goes away. You can still see it if you candle it though. If the egg was clean when you picked it up you could use it for cakes or breads; but the crack could have let in bacteria...especially if it looked as messy as some of my eggs do, so I wouldnt use it for soft boiled. I generally give them back to the chickens. Sometimes I will step on them right in the coop...they seem to love them partially frozen! Eggsicles anyone?
Cind---I think more people should know the ways of the egg packing places (and how those production chickens are kept) Then we would be selling eggs like mad! Too many people are like my parents though--"I dont want to know!" Drives me NUTS! They sure like to take my eggs home though...

I think RAIM asked about selling hatching eggs? I certainly would charge more for them if you have to do more work and you are guaranteeing fertility/hatchability. When I have eggs for hatching I keep them on the counter and flip them a couple times a day; but as you know, even refrigerated and "store" eggs can hatch!

Well I think that is all for now...going to do some other reading for a bit and then off to work for me. It is snowing here presently, I bet the roads will be a joy! Speaking of...glad you didnt get in an accident with another car! Also glad that you Grandson was already home! How scary!
Have a fantastic day everyone! Terri O

Dr h ...sorry about Little b... so many losses lately

I have another sinus infection so under the weather... Off to another specialist tomorrow. Ready for my solo chick to go outside but need to wait for march to make sure she is if enough. She keeps jumping out of my basement mini coop or using the silkies as a step up to get out.

So as i am planning for summer.. Thought I would do a refresher on what breeds everyone has that might be willing to sell? I would love standard sized cochin or Wyandotte? Maybe even a rock? Need some good layers and lovers for us!

staywarm and dry... And excuse my typing on the iPad... Spacebar does not always work

Angie, I hope Wally is feeling better. It sounds like you're doing everything right. All I can suggest now is just keep an eye on him, or if you can, bring him in the house for a couple of days, keep him warm & pamper him. When he perks up, put him back out in the coop in a pet taxi or cage for a few days so your other roo gets used to seeing him again. Or if you were planning on giving him away anyway, just keep him in until the gal can come & get him.

TO, that is interesting about the solid yolk. I found one of those out in my coop this summer. Freaked me out! And I'm glad noone ate it either.

I'm thinking it came out of one of my PRs, but I don't know for sure. Awwww, cute chick pic. What kind is the hen? She has some pretty coloring.

Yes! Sacked Eli for the 6th time! Man, I dislike the Giants. I can't believe they won.

Good link, Tom. Glad you posted it.

Great post for post #16000, TO!

Yikes! SusieJ, I'm glad you are ok. Scary for sure.

Sounds like he isn't gonna be too thrilled about it either.

Ang, that was too funny about the crack!

Yes, if you get any eggs that have cracked, either toss them or cook them up for your chickens. If you have some that froze but the shell is intact, you can still use them but I'd use them up first. HTH.

So, FT, you gonna take my extra roos from this hatch?

Well, still only 5 fuzz butts as far as I can tell. Dang, they're cute! I went in there a little while ago & started talking to Alice. Suddenly 2 little peepers popped their heads out, one from under each wing. I almost died of laughter. And naturally my camera was out here next to my puter because I was uploading pics.

Oh, and one little story: I woke up this morning to find DH sitting in front of the chickie cage, sipping on his coffee watching the little ones & mamma. Now THAT was a Kodak moment!

Finally! I typed this up last night, but the screen locked up & wouldn't let me post this.

Dr H: Sorry to hear about LilB!!!

TerriO: Thats exactly what I did-fed it back to the chickens

We got about 3 inches of snow overnight and its still coming down...glad I took the day off. I've spent close to an hour out there trying to sweep/scrap the ice off the bird netting over the run-insanity LOL....but I really don't want it pulling down and trying to reattach it again.

I think Wally looks a lil better today, although he is still sleeping alot....crossing my fingers that he is on the mend.

I would also like to know what Day old breeds anyone will have to sell late spring?

Awwww, DrH, I am so sorry to hear about lil B!

My first 2 chickens were banties (still have one!). After getting some LF, those little ones always made me a little nervous. I was always afraid the big ones would somehow hurt those little shrimps.
Hey, if I get that aussie roo from TO, would you want any aussie chicks, DrH? My bator comes today!
yesss.gif

KNA, I've had hens lay 2 eggs in a day also, The first one usually is normal, but the second one is usually a softer shelled one because it got released early & didn't have time to form a shell. I don't think it is anything to worry about unless it becomes a pattern.

Ok I was in the middle of doing a spell check and lost my post !!

So, here I go in a shorter version.

Cind so sorry about Sissy. Hopefully if she comes back to me she comes back as a hen !! A little yellow/gray bantam turken hatched yesterday while I was at the baby shower !!
love.gif
If it is a hen I will call her Sissy.
hugs.gif
Sorry for your loss. And Dr Ha sorry for your loss too
hugs.gif

Ate way to much sugar at the baby shower yesterday. The home made cake was eggcellent so had to have a second piece. Found a hair on it though. Gross. At my nieces birthday party my Aunt found a hair in the bakery cake too !! Gross. What is it with baby cakes and hair ???

Oh I forgot to tell ya all I got 2lbs of carrots for $.49 at Aldli's the other day. So bought 20 bags. Cooked some up for the dogs, chickens and may actually eat something healthy myself. Plan on making a pork roast and venison roast today with beacon on top. Makes good gravy !!

Did something stupid. I put 3 EE eggs in the bator last night. They are fathered by either one of the Lavender Roos or an Australorp Roo. So they will be mutts. Sure hope they come out Hens and EE'rs and not brown layers. Either way they will be split to lavender or 50/50 % chance of it.

I put 1 bantam turken, 5 lavender split 1 dutch bantam egg in lock down last night. Still have a bunch of paint silkier eggs in the bator.
I think from now on I'm only going to set eggs on the 1st thru the 9Th of the month. Will make it easier for me to calculate the lock down and hatch dates in my old head.
old.gif

1 + 18 = 19Th for lock down. 1 + 21 = 22ND for hatch !!! I don't want to have to carry over into the next month. This old brain has no short term memory left !!!
Maybe I should share this tip with Jim, that is if he can still add in his head
old.gif
gig.gif
Sorry Jim couldn't resist !!! Are you in here yet ???
