Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Elaine- I usually go to the garden show every year with my mother in law to get ready for spring, but my mom is in town this weekend. Actually it will be nice because she is watching our kids on Saturday so we can go to the dells and hit the outlet malls and get a nice dinner out. cant wait to have a little time away from the kids. My mom tries to come every other month to watch them as she is only a few hours away, but with winter and colds and such, she has not been up since Thanksgiving. We are all anxious to see her. She and her boyfriend come up tomorrow and we are heading to the kids museum.

Say... I know someone on here has Lavender Orpingtons ( think so...) any opportunity for hatching eggs? We are going to fill Carol's hovabator up!

Oh those big chicks look like they got some great personality Dr H... EE's and Lorps? I do see some roos in there too! Cuteness

Good morning--you are right DrH--those are some seriously ugly chickens! (they look just like the ones I get around here!

) Looks like you have at least a FEW hens LOL! May they be great egg layers for you.
Carol--thanks for the link you passed on to Elaine. I emailed them t ask my question...hopefully someone will be looking for a place to keep a hive or three! I really would like to have bees again...I love to watch them!
Well--I have much to do and then off to work...have a great day everyone! Terri O

Morning all!!
Waiting for the lazies to get their feathered butts in gear and lay their eggs. Lots of cackle but nothing to show for it...Silly things...Maybe I need to get out the Betty Crocker manual and remind them that beef is not the only thing for diner.....
Valerie was all mean and crankie this morning too. She's not been laying the last few days so I'm hoping she was just laying her egg and not going broody.
Ah, yes, I have determined that Bubba The Barbarian would have been named Abby (as in Abby Normal) if he was a she. BTB has decided to steal socks and drag them around the house. He then flops down and death shakes the sock and then guts it. Then he has to drag his "kill" onto one of our chairs to keep it away from marauding dogs. Then he takes it, drags it around some more and kills it again. I don't know which is funnier, his antics or the dog that goes bonkers while the cat "teases" him with the sock...Never should have let dh get our cat at a chicken swap....

bf4-See.....told ya so! Mealworms are the best chicken tamer downers! LOL Your post made me laugh..good thing I finished my coffee!

DrH-Wow you sure have a bunch of roosters it looks like. Atleast you got a couple of hens.....

Oh and Happy Birthday to those who are celebrating! Congrats!!

Well, have go to F&F to get shavings to clean out the coop. I think Buzzy will get some fresh shaving today too. Had to move her around to fit the other brooder pen in the coop and her shaving are looking a little ragged. She is one fat pheasant...
Cheers!

good morning, I turned the last incubator off last night. tossed about 20 eggs..all clears..

A friend sent me a lead on a peahen. I am going to go get her tomorrow.. IDK what kind she is, but she is just over two years old.. should lay eggs, I hope..

somebody asked me if I was going to start selling puppies.. No, not full time; I just want one to raise from a pup from Nora.. IDK what I would do with the rest of the pups.. prolly train them and sell them..

have to get a half ton of feed again, today..

Hey Jim... I had to look up dogs that could guard chickens. Idk if I should even be thinking about it since I don't have many chickens yet! But can the guard dogs be left outside, un chained and not run off? We've had terrible luck with our outside dogs running off. Then they had to be in a kennel. We finally said no more to kenneling all the time and rehomed them. What say you, oh wise one? Can there be a chicken guard dog who can be trusted with smaller children AND not run off???

yes.... but it does not just happen... there is training involved..

You have to decide what you want from the dog and then let the dog know in no uncertain terms.
and you have to be consistent.

everybody involved with dog has to agree on the terms.. that is a problem here in my household with Ken involved.. He thinks dogs should be fed snacks from the dinner table.. I think dogs should be outside or at least lying on the floor away from the table..

Jim could see where that would be a problem with the training. I'm tellin ya shock collar is the way to go. Love that episode of Cheers where Cliff is wired. Dance Mail man

MLH Abby could be short for Abigail, gotta love Mel Brooks! BTB sounds like he's providing a lot of entertainment for all!

I agree with you on this.....I just wish that we could find the no uncertian terms that our Irish Setter could understand and comply with! Our Aussie pup pays no attention to the chicks at all-she just wants the attention. Our Irish on the other hand given the chance would take one right out of our hands!

We don't leave either dog along with the chickens.

Well CC and TO..... I candled the school eggs today. Of the 5 lavender Orps, I have 3 currently viable,1 is clear and 1 had a blood ring. With the Marans eggs I have 4 viable, 2 clears, and 3 questionable. I left them all in except the one with the blood ring. I only kept 2 Wheatens for me and those are the 2 clear eggs! No possible Wheatens here. Hoping you got the good ones TO!

I will say my Ovaview candler is SO worth the $35! I could see in the Orps eggs clearly, and was able to see decently on the maran eggs as well. I am saying to CC... Go candle dang it! You'll be able to see nice veins and I'm hoping you get 4 viables at least!!!
