Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Morning All!!
Well I have two chicks in the "chick t.v." upstairs in the now "chick room". I have two in the bator as they have not dried or shed their ambilicals yet.
I want to take the older chicks to the barn but there is now an cold going through the flocks.. and I don't want to risk any of the older jaerhon chicks.

There is a super odd thing going on with my van... the van's battery seemed to be drained, so after jumping it twice with a battery charger, I got a new battery...
Drove around with it that day, the next day.. poof same thing.. I tried to jump it with my truck.. with no luck.. so I assumed it was something else...
So it has sat for over a week, or possibly two now....
Today I went to close the two rear wing windows.. (stupid me has had them open during the last few storms...).. and on a whim decided to try to start it..
AND GUESS WHAT.... it started So now I am wondering if the new battery was drained... It seemed fine, lots of power for the windows, lights.. etc etc...
And no I didn't try to jump it with the battery charger since its up at the barn where the horses and chickens live....And its not mine...
So I am hoping for a ride to the auto parts store to have the new battery checked and possibly exchanged.
Sooo ODD...
Well off to do laundry and start on dishes...
ugh.. so domestic...

Good morning,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I think,,,,,,,,,,

Around 8:30 gathered some eggs, let the Marans and Fools Day hatch all out, watered the rabbits then came in to clean and pack the eggs. Stepped back outside on the deck hearing a bit of a ruckus,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Yeah,,,,this was checking out the brooder shack,,,,the ruckus was the rabbits freaking out, last year I had a female and cub raise He11 with my rabbits, finally had to get the State ppl to live trap and move them,,,,the cub had a nice "V" marking on his chest,,,,,,soooo,,,,,this could be the same culprit,,,,they were relocated about 35 miles from here.

It sniffed around, checked out the feeders, didn't do a **** thing when I blew a Acme whisel or when Jake barked at him, but he did finally move off when I fired the pistole a few times hitting the tree above him,,,,finally saw him crossing the road in front of the house,,,,,,,,,,,never had a problem until last year hope this isn't a "sign"

just another day in the Northwoods,,,,,,,,,oh yeah,,,,frost predicted tomorrow night

ugh... scary bear!

so trying to make a decision if I want to sign up for a local CSA farm share or if I can get enough veggies for ourselves. Last year I opted not to do a CSA and then the weeds and woodchucks took over and we spent so much at the grocery...and I would rather support local if I can. I found one that delivers local and is fairly decently priced. My beans, corn, onions and potatoes look good so far. Broccoli is coming up but do they look woosy and soft/floppy at first and harden up as they get bigger? Zuc, cucs and melon are not as strong looking as I would like them to be.
the small front garden has tomatoes that look ok, peppers that are not as big as I would like, carrots that have not come up yet...lettuce that looks good and some radishes that have lots of greens but not poking out yet. then again ds5 helped plant the seeds so they might be a little close together.

On a plus note I saw that the rainbow chard seeds we planted along the entire length of the coop are coming up! Pretty and food for the coop too.

So DH was complaining to me that the chickens are so noisy they are bugging him. Ok .. didnt have a problem a few months ago, but between the rooster that has started crowing (but is a silkie so how bad is it really) and my delaware Pirate... who talks when anyone is outside. Trying to get their attention and convince them to either give her a treat or let her out to dig in the garden for you to find worms. (funniest thing ever... she sits on my lap when I garden so she can help me dig) Very friendly chicken with the kids, but very noisy... I have to put my camera up to see how she is laying. Might be a deciding factor with her before the summer is over.

Chicken question... do chickens at POL often sit in the nest box on other chickens eggs and pretend they laid with the crazy egg laying song, or should I assume she is laying? I know she is close, but the comb is still not as red as everyone elses. She is 6 months old. I have not seen her lay but might be....

Oh and pretty certain that my three big hatchlings ( falcon the blue egg EE big bantam, Ewok the bantam brown leghorn, and wookie, the D'uccle) are all girls. They are 9 weeks old and no red in the small combs they have. ALl three are so sweet and follow us around like puppies. Hoping the cochin and silkies are girls too.
That is my life... garden, chicken and kiddos... with a little work and hubby tossed in!

Quote: I think I would try to find a place that sells the turner motor, timer and frames all as a kit.

you could possibly build the frame etc, but I don't think you would be saving that much $$$..

If the wafer seats on the micro switch button OK, I wouldn't worry about getting a new screw.. You are going to set it only once and leave it..

whatsa matter Dan ? couldn't hit it with three shots ?

I always thought that a bear's normal range was about 20 miles.. being kicked away by Mamma and searching for his own domain could easily have brought him back to you..

Not everybody has a pet bear..

You are now his pappa, so you should not hurt his feelings.. maybe put out a few extra treats so he won't be lonesome for his mamma..

One more time, and then I am going to scrounge up some lunch..

I tilled up a good chunk of the garden planted 2 rows of beans .. 9 hills of cukes.. still have the squash to do and the garden is done..

Nephew came out and I helped him install a double wide screen on the French Patio doors.. I am glad he was the engineer on this project,, It is so nice to be just a helper for a change.. I sat and drank coffee for a large portion of my participation.. Like I said, it was nice..

Windy Day here on the hill! Sorry for your bad day Ghost....I would get some aprons for the back of those hens. They make a world of difference. I like the Magees feed at embarrass, I live by marion and make the drive. Hope you can figure out the problems and have a happy coop again.

Nice pics unk...I have a harvest permit for zone B, however only Bores are interest to the harvest for me,besides sows with cubs aren't fair game. I think some electric fence is your answer too. The damage can mount up and worth the cost.

Venzun Loins grilled to perfection with ho-made tato salad and grilled ho-made buns....gonna wash er down with a nilla coke whiskey....thanks TO!

FYI, it wasn't state ppl that live trapped the bears last year,,,somehow the DNR pawned that duty off to the USDA, yeah the DNR still makes the $$ selling permits and mis-managing the bears for profit,,, just like they did the deer in the state.

anyway,,,to get them to trap the bears last year I simply told them the could bring the trap or the next time I had a problem I would remove the problem,,,,,,,repeated that same message today,,,we'll see if they get here with a trap again

yes electric fencing works,,,,I have the 1 acre garden fenced,,,,,but an electric fence to protect my backyard and outbuildings is a bit much,,,,,,,,,never had these bear incidents when the old rules of harvest were the law

black bears are called "woods pigs" for a reason,,,,,,,respond to bait like Pavlov's dog,,,no fear of humans anymore
