Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Well, it's timet to start hitting the bottle again tonight !!! LOL

Went to Rhinelander to meet up with DH at his doctor appointment today. He has been coughing and hacking so bad for about a week now. When he started saying he was short of breath I told him I was going to make an appointment for him. Called today and got him in at 3:30pm. Wouldn't happen down in Racine that quick !!! lol
Anyway, he is on warfarin because of a history of blood clots in his legs and lungs and he has had bouts with pneumonia before he had the clots so better safe then sorry.
They did a chest xray, blood work (my request for an A1c) (I love telling doctors what to test for !!! LOL) and the doc did an EKG because his heart sounded weird (can't remember what he said so just calling it weird) I was surprised that they found his heart !!! LOL LOL LOL Anyway the EKG was normal but he has a slow heart rate which he said was ok, just the way his heart was. A1C and White blood count were good. His chest Xray did show that his lungs had previous damage or whatever from his clots or pneumonia but no pneumonia now but could have bronchitis.

So long story a bit shorter he put him on an antibiotic, an inhaler and codine cough syrup (so I can get some sleep lol ). So spent the rest of the afternoon waiting at Walmart for his Rx's.

So the reason for tipping the bottle tonight.............. I got home and found all three of my incubators NOT RUNNING !!! Now the reason I put two bators into lockdown was so I didn't have all of my eggs in one basket so to speak !!! BUT THEY WERE ALL PLUGGED INTO ONE CORD !!!! WHICH CAME UNPLUGGED !!! Probably by the Two Cats Playing Cat and Mouse !!!
I swear when I left at about 2:30pm they were up and running, all three of them. Didn't get into the house until around 9:30pm. The temp in one of the bators was down to 71 degrees !!!!
It took me forever to find my candler (found it right where I left it) and I did see some movement in some of the eggs so I may not have lost them
fl.gif

Then to top it off I lost three chicks today. One this morning, a LO that was teenie tiny and never grew. I half way expected to lose that one but then I lost two older ones when I got home. One was a lavender/EE cross. Beautiful chick. It was al feathered out. It had white feathers with Lavender highlights. The other chick was younger and was the only Blue Copper Maran I hatched out of two that I got when I was down in Madison the last time.
The only thing that I can think of now that might play a role in their deaths (at least the older chicks) is that I've sprayed some fly repellent in the brooder boxes that the ducks were in (cause DH didn't carry them outside for me) and their were flys that got in and I wanted to knip them in the bud and get rid of them.
Either that or they still had cocci. I'll never know.
But one thing I can say is I'm getting real tired of so much of my time is spent on chickens or chicken chores (not to mention all of the money) and it's keeping me away from spending time on my garden and keeping me from spending time and working with my horses. So after coming home tonight to this disaster I'm really fed up tonight.
At least tonight I'm seriously thinking of packing up the bators for good. Wonder what life without chickens would be like ????

WCC I just need one of the turrets (sp) reattached to the collar on the pony harness. I'll have to see if that same harness fits my smaller pony. The one I have is for the POA. Don't know why I'm in a hurry to get the harness fixed since I don't have a pony cart !!!! Geez another thing to add to my wish list.
I have my big beautiful brand new pioneer cart that needs some time too.
I got all of the goats dewormed yesterday. Now I need to deworm all of the horses, ponies and the donkeys and pigs. Bought peanut butter today to hide the dewormer from the pigs. Promised them peanut butter sandwiches !!! I love my pigs !!!

Ok, well now that I put everyone to sleep I had better sign off of this post anyway.
Oh and Bigz, I do type without looking at the keys !!! LOL

Hi All...

FT... I don't know if you should drink and type....last night's post was...well.... confusing
gig.gif
Those ducks are so cool! Wish I could have ducks, but the chickens are enough work for me
hmm.png
Sorry about your chicks
sad.png

Ken... You should send the comments you made to us back to THEM! Let them realize that not everyone that raises chickens is a 3rd grade drop out! Let them know too that in this economy, some people have more time than money! Sorry about your chick
sad.png

DrH...LOL I was thinking a chalkboard and a pointer... or maybe some fried chicken posters!

tiki... hope your Cochin recovers!

Carol... did you get my PM? Awww, cute babies!

Jim.... eating peas straight form the garden is my favorite way to eat them too....one year somehow we only had enough for 2 cooked meals for the family
hu.gif
had know idea what could have happen to them all
hide.gif
the fact that the pea patch was less than 10' ft from my car may have had a little to do with it.
roll.png
THANKS FOR THE TICK TIDBIT!!!
" I have to type fast so I don't forget my comments.. whoops, too slow.."
lau.gif
I got to remember that one! hehehe "I have a guinea egg sized pepper on one plant.. many blossoms on tomatoes and peppers.." Yep, only a true poultry person would describe size of something by type of "egg size"!!!
tongue.png

TO...did you see what I said about a fix it job? Sorry about the ducklings
sad.png

Ghost... 2' ? My girls would laugh at that!!! I use 4' and some still flew in!

I found a guinea nest!!! It was in the berry patch! 32 eggs and 6 of yesterdays missing chicken eggs. I think there must be another one out there somewhere.

Well, better get to bed... night all!

BTW.....IT'S RAINING!!!!
yesss.gif

Good Rainy Morning!
So here I was hoping to mow the lawn today...awwww shucks! LOL!! At least I don't have to water all the newly planted places!!

Just stopping in to catch up and avoid the rain a little longer. Chores are soooooo much fun in the rain.....

There is so much to comment on but can't remember all of it. But here it goes...the generic sorry for every ones losses on the poultry front. Glad every ones garden are doing well. Congrats on the new babies.

FT-Hope your DH feels better soon!

Jim-Cool tick removal info! Thanks!

Ok, well I'd best get gone....the rain I think has stopped for the time being...now on to critter chores!!
Later

Morning all!
jumpy.gif

dodged a bullet last night, whew. We got frost but the temp hit just below 32 and then bounced back up when clouds rolled in. Had everything covered so there was no damage.

Ok, so, anyone ever want to spank a chicken????

Here's the story; One of my four rescue hens (they are some kind of Wyandotte/Austrolorp cross, my guess, that Sunnyside Hatchery calls "Special Black" I will post pics when they all finally get enough feathers back that I don't run the risk of someone turning me in for chicken abuse) wasn't acting quite right the last couple days. She was always the one who had to be right there whenever I was doing anything and the first to come running when she heard me, looking for a treat. The typical moving a little slower, roosting a little early, just not herself. Anyway, yesterday afternoon I was just watching them for a while trying to get clues when she laid a "misfire"aka egg w/ no real shell. In fact laid isn't quite the correct term as she didn't even squat. Immediately the other hens ran over and started squabbling over it and it was gone in seconds. When I went back out later the hen seemed to be back to her old self and she was eating and drinking. Relief because she really is my favorite. HOWEVER! This morning I go out to open the coop and I hear a lot of "hammering" going on. I open the door and there is three of them, (including the favorite hen) with a fresh NORMAL egg on the floor, one end pecked open and they are eating away
th.gif
. Geesh! I was having a minor problem with this when the big hen was laying "misfires" until I got her healthy and then put a cover over the nest boxes to darken them. This latest incident must have jogged their memories.
Now what do I do!
smack.gif

Better get out and check the nest for more eggs before they go after those too.

I wanted to help these girls because??????????????????

Good morning!!!

Yesterday i received pictures from the guy that took my fav roo Donny-looks like he has a lot of natural open grass/brush to run around in!!

3 day count down until grad party here so have been crazy busy. I took the next 2 days off to finish cleaning/painting. Heres a pic of some of the painting in progress: (excuse the mess-boxes from furniture and things moved around while painting)

Then next week I am working from home on Tues and off Wed-Fri...as I have 8 different sexed pullets arriving from MPC!!!! yeah!!!!
Appears as though out of the 5 chicks I have-2 may be males-going to post the one LO that is about 6 wks on craigslist :-(
So I went out and brought a cute lil varigated boxwood bush for the chickens...2 hrs later I have sticks!!! LOL $28 salad bar for the lil brats....I should post pics.
Saw this next to the road a 1/2 mile from the house:

Awwww, such a shame. What a waste of a beautiful animal. Yep, I'm one of those. When we have problems with the "neighbors" (deer, bears, coyotes, wolves, cougars~we have them all and even an occasional moose passing thru) I just remind people that we moved into THEIR neighborhood, they didn't move into mine. Hubby and I do our best to just dwell in peace with all our neighbors, whether they be 2 foot or 4. Besides, Bobcats are incredible rodent control specialists!

Did anyone catch the news report on the national news this morning? Would have been easy to miss. All they said was "Hundreds of people have gotten sick with salmonella this spring from getting chicks from various hatcheries across the country". That was it, DUH
smack.gif
Oh, they did add a quick blurb about hand washing but made no connection about handling chicks, etc.

BTW~the paint work looks absolutely beautiful!!!!

Good morning--just wanted to say a quick "HI" I am off to work. I am seeing a new lady and her Hubby today...I hope there are easy to work with...the client list is picking up...thank Goodness 'cause the bill at the feed mill is approaching where they start to complain! Have a good one! Terri O
(PS) didnt catch the critter last night but found no more damage. The trap was closed and on it's side so I dont know what was messing with it either...

Thats just wierd!!! Another example of the news being biased against small time backyard flocks. They know who is paying their bills.

Angiebuds nice picture of the interior decorating. Glad Donny is having a good time!!! The poor guy at the side of the road.

Vik that is somewhat funny "hammering" away. Akk! Bad chickens. Golf balls and hot pepper sauce!@!

cindlady Thanks. lol He is in a small coop with one hen and he seems to be walking a little better. I can't imagine how, but his leg appears to be healing... I am reading backwards on this CH(only 2 pages so far) now I gotta go and try catch up later. Got a big day of cleaning ahead as someone is coming over at 3. Finishing up the laminate flooring but I have to go and get another package of them. East peasy till ya run out lol

good morning, looks like the frost did not get the blackberry blossoms.. I doubt if we even had frost.. a bit cloudy, but no rain..'

I took my car to my friends repair shop to get the brake lights fixed.. after two new aftermarket switches failed to work, we put the old one back in.. not working yet, have to go back today.. He is going to pick one up at an auto salvage yard.. that last tornado took a tree down just 8 feet from his shop. then it went across a 19 acre field and you can see where it tore into the woods..

baiting laws are set by the state.. counties can not lessen the restrictions, but they can elaborate on them.. technically, it is illegal to feed deer in your feeders.. people get around this by "feeding the birds"..

If we are going to hunt on equal terms, then no guns should be allowed.. or bow and arrow ?
It's just all about what degree of advantage we want to use.. I never baited, but I am not dead set against it, either.. I never turned down venison just because the guy giving it to me baited..
A lot of guys say they would not bait,, but I have seen them set up their stand as close to a corn field or hay field as they can get..

I guess I should uncover the tomatoes and keep the buckets close.. frost is predicted for tonight, again..

those news blurbs are meant to titilate people.. they give a couple of real facts, but the facts might not be connected in any way.. with as many people as there are in this country, it is just co incidence that some of them who bought chicks, also came down with some kind of illness.. and I would like to know who took the time to do the study about the correlation between the illness and the chicks.

chickens do not have a certain taste bud, (for lack of the clinical name), that they are not affected by the "hot" in pepper.. I have fed my chicks cayanne pepper and they loved it.. so pepper is not the answer to egg eating chickens..

one more thing,, just for the record.. I was here before all those bears and deers.. unless you can show me one that is over 69 years old..

So I just googles that news story about salmonella from hatchery chicks....FOX 9... (http://www.foxnews.com/health/2012/05/31/hundreds-salmonella-cases-tied-to-chicks/

And it is so misleading! So here is the scoop: over 300 cases since 2004 (Not recent) and 80% linked to one particular hatchery in the western US-doesnt state which hatchery. Also states that only one case so far this year. Last paragraph:
QUOTE:
During the eight years studied, the annual number of illnesses linked to the hatchery ranged as high as 84, with 29 cases last year and only one so far in 2012.
