Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Anyone know if I can make pickles out of cukes that are slightly bitter? I'm getting these gorgeous Poona Kheera variety cukes, but the taste is subpar. They don't do taste tests on the veggies shown at the county fair, do they? I wanna enter those.

BBP, that happened to me once too. Was riding a new and stubborn little pony at Honey Rock Camp when I worked in their barn, and he just dropped to both knees in mid-trot. Sent me flying over his head into the dirt like a torpedo! Lazy little brute. He was a cute Paint though, so forgivable.

No diving broads here either, the pond's too shallow.

sorry kristip she isn't better.

BBP glad your 'boys' are ok. Yeay on the horse

ride. I bet that little trick 'worked' for your horse in the past. My horse days are over. Got a fractured skull at age 8 from one and was out of school for a year. Then got kicked at age 11 and thats about it!

I remember the old metal skates. I wasn't much of a skater though as my ma used to say our family had weak ankles.

he They hurt my ankles. maybe it was the power of suggestion.

I was admiring some little fawn prints until they led me to my beans. No beans this year. Cleaned the whole big coop out yesterday. Then redid my fly traps. I neglected them when it was real hot and am paying for it now.

Well Tiki, that smart of your ma. Weak ankles indeed. Bet she had that figured all out so you wouldn't get yourself killed roller skating!

Amy-Ha...ha..ha. I bet if you worked some on your pond, you could have a diving broad if you wanted....ha!

So, I happened to mention to DH our discussion on roller skates. He did not ask us why were were discussing roller skates. Instead he broke out with a song that is now stuck in my head. So being the good person that I am, I thought I'd share it and maybe get it stuck in your heads as well!!

*ahem*
OOOOOOoohhhhhhhh
Ya can't roller skate in a buffalo heard,
ya can't roller skate in a buffalo heard,
ya can't roller skate in a buffalo heard
But you can be happy if ya want to!!!!

Ok, I'm all done now....heheheheheeh!!

OK, I was going to be the polite one and not mention diving broads, until she corrected it and now they are driving into the pool..

Our chickens may have pulled off the save of the year.. we have 3 baby peacocks..

we have 18 keets that nobody wanted..

tomorrow morning the hen in confinement is heading to the freezer.. she thinks it is fun to kill the quails..

I got the shaft off the tractor.. yeah, me.. tomorrow i will take it to wausau hydraulics and see if they can duplicate it a bit less expensive than last time..

I think I found a mechanic who will overhaul the motor.. a good friend of DD#1.. He does a lot of her work for free, prolly will make up the difference on me..

I just might break the tractor in two and do the clutch myself.. the most difficult part of that will be cleaning out a space in the garage so I can hang the front off of the beam..

I will have to remove the whole loader frame also.. that's OK,, I have done it all before..

going online to see if I can locate tractor parts..

Sunday Evening All...late comment on the metal roller skates....we had them too. We were creative and tied a long rope to the bike. Then we took turns getting pulled around like water skis, if you took the corners on the siewalk to wide and run a ground, you were head over heels....thanks for stirring the memory Cind.

Good luck with the tractor Jim. Hope it goes good for you.

Gonna be another hot one tomorrow....sounds like only day of the extreme stuff...thank goodness.

Good luck with the sick chickn Kris...hate to see em suffer.

I have a light brahama broody again...been takin the eggs the last couple days. Gonna be awful hot sittin in the nest box tomorrow.

Froze a couple lb bags of green beans today...picked another half doz maters....sure was tasty on the venzun burger tonight.

Don't know about the bitter ones Amy....let us know how they turn out.

Sounds like everyone is busy! Good luck on the rebuild Jim! Didnt we have quite the discussion on "splitting" tractors a year or so ago? Is that what you have to do AGAIN? Or was that DrH? You guys always seem to be taking something apart!

I really think that your hen is an internal layer Kristip. Is her belly kind of balloon-like or is it hard? I had a hen with ascites(like a balloon filled with water) and I drained her a few times and she lives quite a while longer. THe internal layer thing cant really be fied though. (unless you have the $$ to have her spayed) That is what my parrot died of according to the necropsy; Egg yolk peritonitis. She only looked sick for two days though--then she was dead!

Speaking of...I had to put a chick down today. It was just standing in the door yard and when I picked it up I saw that it had a really swollen eye and around it's beak. It was kind of skinny too. I cleaned out the swelling and gave it some water and food but it didnt want to eat or drink. So I took care of it right away before I could think about it too much!

The garden is being quite stingy with it's produce...if I only counted on it to feed the fam we would be starving for sure! Here is what I picked tonight:

I could have scrabbled for more potatoes but I didnt have a shovel handy...we didnt have steaks...all the kids came home from sky diving (that's what they did today!) and we didnt have enough so we made burgers instead. Good thing I bought a dozen ears of corn yesterday! So anyhow, it was a delicious dinner...

Well, I am pretty tired and I have to go out and lock up the critters so I guess it's good night for me! Sweet dreams everyone and we will all talk again tomorrow I am sure! NIghties! Terri O

Don't tell me chickens don't think! And plan! And scheme!

Went out to close up and collect eggs. One of the feed buckets with not much in was dumped over so I went to pick it up and an egg caught my eye under the bench. Then I saw more. OK, they were hiding eggs, not unusual. Got up to get something to put them in and here come Jasmine all he1l bent and gets on the nest! Got her mad little but off and pulled out 22 eggs! That little sh!t made sure she was on the roost for treat time every night then would go on the nest when I was gone! She also apparently would get off the nest when I came into the coop. I was wondering why she was spending so much time in the coop but that area has gravel so I just figured it was cooler there. She had to have planed this!

And yes, that's a little pullet egg in the upper right!

I'm going to try to candle them but I don't really want little ones now. Why can't she go broody when I want her to? She is a really good broody though and a good mom!

Maybe I'll let her have a couple back

CU all later!

I give the Perfect Child Prize to... MLH!!! If I go to the mini bash post and post "Heather is the bomb" it will be about her because SHE LISTENED AND DID AS SHE WAS TOLD. I hate to be bossy (oh he!! who am I kidding) and she posted appropriately. I highly encourage others to do so as well. Or else I will keep whining about it. And whining, and whining...

Looks like I have 3 older chicks to cull. I found out of of the black split orps is a roo. And a nasty one already. Don't you dare peck at me little pecker. Broken neck coming his way. There's another young roo gonna get done, and a poor aussie ameracauna mix that has a leg thats not working. If I let her into the main flock like she is now, they're gonna kill her anyway, and it wont be quick. But Ive been watching this for a week now and it is no better at all. I also need to pick which 2 roos are getting locked up. They all seem to be wandering and making full use of the free ranging capabilities. But I hate when they stand under the window and freaking crow. Move on to someplace else, you've got 2 acres or more to cover. Like they need to be next to the house!

I moved the ducks pools and crate to the other side of the yard, closer to the coop. Baby steps I think. I am slowly going to get them closer and closer to the coop, so when its time for them to move in, it wont be so hard. Those big ducks sure are interested in my baby ducks. The want to peck the sh!t out of them. The muscovy just watches and follows them around the pool on the outside. The Aussie dot will jump in the pool with them and go right after them. So i have to babysit them in the pool and not let the big bad ducks eat them up. Those ducklings are such chickens...

I am jealous of all the garden talk. But eventually I will get something out of mine. I would love to try a jar of some other peoples pickles. I finally learned the ince bath tricklast year to make crisp homemade pickles. They are so good. I gave most of them away. But I hope to really get a big batch this year. We'll see if that happens...

Gotta get kids into bed. And yes... mentioning diving broads and shafts being out led me to think some terrible things....
