Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Casie, if you have 4 birds with bumble, I'd guess your roosts are the problem. I can't see that many cases being caused by splinters, unless you've one heck of a rough piece of driftwood.

Good luck on the surgeries.

If anyone is interested, this is an excellent link to info on bumblefoot, complete with step by step instructions on how to do the procedure. But be warned that there are many graphic pics on this site, so the sissies (not mentioning any names, Bigfam) should maybe not check it out.

CC that is the post I used to know how/what to do. I picked up the Vetericyn last night. Great tutorial!
The roosts are 2x2, very clean and not rough. So it must be that they are too high up and they are hurting themselves when the drop down to the floor of the coop.

Casie-I have to agree with CC on the roosts. The only other thing I can think of is if they are free ranging, maybe they are all going into an area with stickers or thorny type plants. Or if you have a garden with prickly vine type plants, maybe they are scratching at those? That might explain why all of them have bumble foot. That's all I can come up with at any rate....
MLH - no free ranging here. Just in their run that has sand in it.

Evening All... store bought just ain't right bigfam! It doesen't take long to whip up ho-made, and it costs way less, is better for you, tastes better, and looks better before you eat. just sayin. Just a few kids around is no big deal.

Kept the flock locked up today til we got back from town.....had to pay the second half of the taxes today. Kept one eye and ear open all day...nothing showed....prolly gonna be good and hungry tomorrow.

We froze another 5 lbs of green beans today....It's just dang fun saving the harvest and eating all the fresh stuff daily for a few months. Folks that hate summer, need a garden for changing their minds.
The maters are changing fast now....won't be long til we are makin juice, stewed, and salsa again.

I'll have to take a head count on the remaining relish to Doc....like you said, can't compare to store bought....ring a bell bigfam?

We didn't have any rain here either...had to finally fence off the zukes...the flock wasen't savin any for me and suzie.

Have fun and keep the women happy!

1/2" earlier and it's pouring again! I know so many of you need it but we don't!
I can't keep up with my gardens and I'm going to have to make little rain boots for my chooks!!!
barnie.gif

I mean really! I appreciate the break so my arm can heal but I popped out between the showers this evening just to take a look at the gardens and came in with a full basket of paste toms, saw a good bushel of beans on the plants and my zukes look like boat oars!

I've fed so much swiss chard to the girls they're starting to give me the stink eye!

More poor onions are probably floating out of the ground. Don't want to think about my poor potatoes. Good thing my garlic is already safely hanging on the back porch tho with all this humidity it isn't curing very fast. I should be dehydrating my first cut of herbs by now but it's been too humid.

Oh well, my pumpkins and squash are loving it anyway. Just hope they don't explode.

I should bring my Kraut to the Bash next year....... good old fashioned crock Kraut....

I was treated with a surprise tonight when I came home from work; my DH had replaced the nasty hollow core bathroom door with a solid wood one!
wee.gif
We had been having issues with the doorknob for the past few weeks and so it is really nice to be able to open and close the door with NO resistance!

That's about it here.... another day tomorrow doing battle with EAA traffic and listening to planes zoom over the plant all day....

good evening folks,

another long day in the north woods, had 1.5" yesterday and rain held off until an hour ago, as vickie said the garden is lovin it, hope it spreads around the state for you dry southern people. The first year attempt at sweet corn looking good, 2-3 ears per stalk, 7' tall or better, full tassel can't wait for the first pickin

getting set to butcher some roosters one of the next cool mornings, actually looking forward to the process and the taste testing. a few are getting brinned and smoked by a friend who has the knack

forgot to close the garden gate checked at 8pm had 2 bucks(6+8pt) and a doe working the clover strip that is planted next to the gh,,,one had to test the fence, a repair is in order tomorrow,,,actually funny when he fell and bounced, shook his head and jumped back through the tear,,,the other 2 then bee-lined it to the gate,,,,,,,,,,critters,,,geeze

egg count dropped a bit the last 2 days,,,storms? humidity? maybe because the layers are feasting on the grower feed in the other feeders? still got another couple pullet eggs,,,nice DARK Marans eggs
woot.gif

stuck 2 broodies in the jail cage next to Jerry,,,that'll fix um

early morning run to Antigo, FF and the butcher for sure, maybe the co-op check some prices on seed and organic ferts

tc folks

I ain't got nuthin', so sweet dreams, all!

Oh, I lied. Vicki, we had a wicked storm roll through here around 1:50 AM. A really nasty hum the whole time too. I was just waiting to be seeing sky. Then we had a weak line come through late this afternoon, maybe 3:30? I went to chase the chickens in before the rain, but they were having none of it. So I left them out. The Moosettes & parents all ran for the carport after a few minutes, but those stupid lavs just stayed out there, getting soaked. Dumb birds. But at least we've been getting some rain now, thankfully.
Ok, now I'm going to bed.

Hi All....

Ain't Broodies sometin'! LOL

TO... I know what you mean about shuffling chickens.(well, some of you got more to shuffle! LOL I still haven't made another pen yet and the young roos got to get separated! There are a few real nice ones I prefer not to butcher, but the rest have to fatten up a bit... then freezer camp! The plucker is at a standstill... need to come up with the money for the fingers and a couple of other parts.

MLH.... LOL.... I thought it was so funny about the cat screaming to get in... never had that happen.... then we got rain this afternoon and little Moses got caught outside! LOL you should have heard him! This was his very first rain he was in!

He was NOT pleased! You should talk to DH about getting some "good feed" into our TSC!!!! I was not happy when I was stuck getting Layana... or whatever that garbage is.

vicki.... I sometimes add dry dog food to the morning mash.... it's a good no corn dog food so they get about 1 cup of dog food to 8 cups of layer and 1 cup of cracked corn. I know you would have to reduce that allot. Love that "Rain, Rain, go away" .... we still need allot! Thanks!

Casie... good luck with the bumblefoot! Hope it clears without a hitch! Might try that chicken recipe too.

Bl4.... I LOVE crock Kraut!!! I haven't made it in years! I miss all the "snitching" just to make sure it was OK
wink.png
If you bring kraut, maybe we can bring something to go with.

unk... 3 ears per stalk? Great! Cool but irritating about the deer.

CC... Most of mine headed for the coop right away when the rain started but a few young ones held up under a piece of plywood...when I looked a little later they were just standing in the rain! Silly chickens! The guineas were way in the back and held up under the pines.

Yep, we got about an inch of rain!!! We still need lots more to get the water table up. The farmers are still pretty much sunk. Maybe some will get at least 1 cutting of hay. Corn is pretty well shot though. Grains are sparse. Too little too late. Worse drought since the 30's!!!

Well, guess that's it... night all!
