Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Morning!

Jealous of those of you up north getting all the rain again. We MAY get a bit this morning yet.

Someone DH works with came and picked up our only rooster last night, a buff silkie(the one in my avatar). They recently got chickens and their rooster was too aggressive. They free range them a lot and wanted a nice roo, silkie will be perfect for them. I want to get a Penedesenca roo so I can hatch a few of my hen's eggs next spring, so now there is room for him.

I've got 5 little fluff balls running around in the bator this morning!! So far there's 2 SFH and 3 Wheaten Marans in there.

We jumped the gun and made our fish fry last night instead of tonight. Think I finally got down how to make a great beer battered fish! Used crappies this time and they were wonderful! The kids even asked for more! Just don't like how the house stinks after frying them all up.

morning everyone!

IT'S RAINING AGAIN!

I'm trying to share, honest!!!

Another 1" over night and it was pouring when I went out to the chooks this morning. In a break right now but there is a tight low pressure that is rotating practically over top of us so we are going to be soaked all morning
rant.gif

Poor chooks! Forgot to put the food in the coop before it poured just before dark last night and the feed dish got filled with water. Figured no problem, I'll just start it fresh in the morning, right.

Opened the pophole in the pouring rain this a.m. and Crockpot (of course,
hmm.png
) would run out, grab a beak full of pellet "mash" and run back into the coop!

Rain quit long enough for me to be able to grab the feeder, dump it into my compost can, put fresh in and put it in the coop where there was already a nice egg! yea!!!

Couldn't just sit and behave myself yesterday so now my arm/shoulder is hurting again. Guess I may have to break down and go visit the dr., well, maybe after it quits raining

Morning all!
Just thought I'd catch up before chores and getting on with the day! Made some cajun fried chicken last night. It was good!
Other then that, today is clean the rabbit pen and cages day. I also have to fill wild bird feeders, and finish up weeding the garden. I had one of the Bleeding Hearts in my flower bed kick the bucket so I need to dig that up. I think even with watering, the drought was to much for this one.
Also need to vacuum and I have to call around and see where I can get it serviced. It's almost 5 years old so it's getting a little tired. Heck, I'd be tired to dragging up fur and hair from 8 dogs for the last 5 years!!

CC-We had that same storm you did. Your right! It hummed the whole time. I kept waiting it to go from a hum to a freight train.

Casie-Wish I had more ideas for your bumble foot problem. Lowering the perches might help. Thanks for the link to that recipe! I love Allrecipes! I added it to my "recipe box" and will try it in the next week or so. I have to thaw out a chicken first! Wonder how it'd work on rabbit......hmmmmm

Cind-I did not know Bubba could scream either! He was terrified. Such a baby that one....TSC and Purina have a "thing". Your best bet for Nutrena is to either get it from F&F. Either their house brand or they are carrying the Nature Wise layer pellets. They also are carrying the Nutrena Country Feeds All Flock. While I'm so not a fan of the All Flock, it is at least better then nothing. Or I'd have to take a look at who is your area carries Nutrena. You can always have a store that carries Nutrena order it for you if they don't carry the feed you want.

Well, best get my day started and my coffee finished!

Good Morning All! Here's the recipe I use for relish. Makes 4 pints. 7 large cuc's, 4 large sweet onions,1/4 cup canning salt, 3 cups white sugar, 1/2 cup flour, 1 teas turmeric, 1 teas ground ginger. 1 teas celery seed. 3 cups white vinegar. 1 cup water. Grate or shread cuc's and onions in a large bowl sprinkle the top with the canning salt, cover tightly with Saran wrap, and let it set on the counter overnight. Squeeze as much liquid out as you can get and set aside. Whisk together the sugar, flour, turmeric, ginger, and celery seed. In a large cooking pot heat the vinegar and water over a med-high heat whisk in the spice mix until smooth stir in the cuc mix and bring to a boil and cook for 15 minutes stir often until thickened. Load up your jars, remover any air with a knife and water bath for 10 minutes. Good stuff! We're headed Nort so I'm packing. Have to go to the bank for some cash and drop off some carrots for L's work. Fill up the Jeep and........ Maybe post on Sun. Have a good weekend everybody!

Morning all....

Kris, I sent an email to Mr Powell yesterday. I'll let you know if I get an answer.
That dog is my problem 'child'....a rescue with separation anxiety and OCD when it comes to birds. He points the chickens till he's just shaking. Yours looks nice and calm...pretty dog.

DrHaHa, thank you for the recipe! I was also thinking of doing a corn relish this year but can't find my recipes since the move. Sorry, had a brain bubble the other day....I meant hwy 13 not 21.

I'm 3 hours late checking the flock due to the rain/lightning...gonna have to just make a run for it I guess. Have a good day all!

I am confused about my egg situation.

Stella was laying an egg a day, perfect shell and all. Then yesterday I went out to retrieve the egg and there was one whole egg and one broken egg. This morning, I went out and there was one broken egg (maybe Stella hasn't laid her egg yet).

I assume that one of my Red Stars is also starting to lay.

How do I tell if Stella (or another) is breaking the extra egg or if the 2nd egg shell is weak?

DH did put "Grower" into the feeder instead of "Layer" recently, so I just switched it out today and put out some Oyster shells and Mealworms. Hopefully, if its a calcium issue, these steps will help!

What is the consensus of the crowd???

Huntress- have you done any training with your dog? Our dog did this too (she is at least 5yrs old maybe older), but doesn't anymore. I introduced her to the area that the chicks were in until she started whimpering and shaking. I'd sit there with her correcting her behavior until the shaking and whimpering stopped AND she was laying down quietly for a while. Then we'd leave on a good note (meaning the unwanted behavior stopped). We'd come back the next day and be able to move closer to the protected chicks. We did this over and over until she could be in the presence of the birds without the unwanted behavior. I DO NOT EVER TRUST HER WITH THEM UNPROTECTED OR UNSUPERVISED! Related to the anxiety, do you cage your dog when you leave? Dogs sometimes need a feeling of protection which their owners often provide. But when the owners leave, the cage provides that protection.

Speaking of Purina feeds... they have a recall just out today for lack of vitamin D.

Includes some Dumor that they make as well.
Yep! there is a big posting by Purina Poultry about it on FaceBook. It's the feed that was produced prior to July 20 @ the Land-o-lakes plant. It has no vitamin D supposedly (wonder what else is missing) tho my crumbles weren't listed, I still wonder if that wasn't the "deficient" feed I was feeding my girls til 3 days ago. Already doing better by the way!

Huntress I had a rescue Vizsla years ago who had lived in a kennel for the first 5 years of her life. I lived in town then and when I was taking her for a walk one day she stealthily snuck up to a canadian goose statue in someones yard and set point on it. I was so proud. LOL She looked beautiful. One time a chicken got loose from it's enclosure and when she saw that I was trying to catch it she took after it. I thought the chicken was a goner. She caught it and it looked like she was biting it on the ground. She then picked it up and brought it straight to me. Not a feather was missing!!! I had to crate her whenever I went out though because she had seperation anxiety pretty bad.

I had to get purina this week so I suppose my chickens will be off their normal routine.

IThey always seem to run out of it faster too. Must be they have to eat more of it to get their nutrients.
