My seasonal Russian immigrant egg customers(Boris and Svetlana, no chit) have quests this week and asked for 3 doz eggs a day

and bring the crew as well!

Ugh, what a day! It was fine until the very end! I won't bore you with the details, but instead of coming home to sizzling steak I came home to cold steak

, at least it is still mooing! DH has finally figured out that the kids can help us with the rooms; right now he and oldest DS are painting the trim in what is to be our bedroom. Tomorrow is going to be hectic! I want to be moved in to our bedroom tomorrow night which means furniture has to be moved, curtains and blinds hung, tops of dressers cleaned off..... maybe I will find my wedding ring....

I promised those boys at work cinnamon rolls, but I don't have time to make scratch rolls so I popped into U-Bake and snagged some of Rich's rolls. They are thawing out right now.... as soon as I finish with dinner I have to run to the store and pick up some cream cheese for the frosting.... those boys sure are spoiled!

I hope I have a big turnout of supporters at the ordinance meeting...... I bought chicken and duck stickers so the committee members could identify the poultry supporters from the anti poultry group. I just hope I am able to answer all of their questions. I have been in contact with the people in Appleton who are trying the get their ordinance changed there. CityPeeps has info from all of the mayors in cities that allow chickens that will help me out a lot.

Ok, off to the store! I have too much going on to sit still for long!

bl4- I'll be praying for you! You really are taking on an awful lot at this moment. Sorry to hear about the cold steak!

I have a strong feeling that our winter is coming early and that we will get a lot of snow. I hear a wide range of time frames in which everyone's birds are heading to roost. Mine are going in while its still daylight, not even dimming. Today the girls went into the coop around 5 and wouldn't come out.

unkadan-do you grow everything in the greenhouse? It seem like your crop is VERY productive by the numbers that you are listing. Do you use pesticide or are you organic?

My 2 cents on the roost thing. My girls have been going in before a hint of twilight all this week too????

Tried to candle the eggs that broody butt is sitting on that I took from under my neighbor's crazy muskovy duck. The egger egg was clearly a dud, darn. Cracked to check but it clearly was never fertile. the other 4 are are so dark that I couldn't get a good look (or any look) with my rigged up flashlight so since I had no idea if any were viable (was the crazy duck even keeping them warm enough?) in desperation I just stole one and cracked it. Wouldn't you know it? Looked like a viable chick possibly as old as 16 days?

Left her the last 3 and see what happens

Good evening! Oh Vicki--I am sorry! I hate when that happens! Here's to hoping that the rest hatch for her.
Bigz--you didnt say what was on the menu for FFF! I am shocked! And BL4 you are an overachiever! Sit down and rest a spell!
TOmorrow I am medicating with the Denagard. Got it in the mail yesterday. Of course yesterday morning I started the ones in the basement on Tylan50...they are already doing better today! YEAH! We figured that I need 2cc to a liter of water for the Denagard, it is going to take quite a while to use that whole 1,000ml!
Gotta run and lock up...we just watched a movie and my eyes are pinchy for sleep! Nighties! Terri O--ready to sleep

I know!!!! I tried coaxing some off the roost with treats. About half fell for it

Hi All,

This computer is dying! I got it kinda working tonight but last couple of nights I couldn't even read the posts! Sorry, didn't take the chance of trying to read too far back.

Weather has been great, wish I had more time to work outside. I have got to get those chickens moved around and set up better. Got to sort out the cockrels and fatten up to butcher too! Vicki... a couple of drops of food coloring on the vent works well.
Grrrr... it's screwing up again!
Night

Quote: in answer, only a few things in the gh, maters, basil, peppers,,,prepping a bed for spinach for over the winter that gets planted in the next week or two (pia with warm soil temps these plants will be started in flats in my basement then transplanted) I call it a gh but it's actually a 21'X60' high tunnel, unheated
no pesticides/fungicides that aren't organic approved, but I'm not certified organic, paperwork isn't my thing

cool morning in the north country 40º last night, fair weekend here is always considered for possible frost
might stop out there today or tomorrow and check out the poultry and eggs for future possibilities and maybe some more local contacts

on the dickering/haggeling thing,,, I can do it with the best of um, but when a set price is stated I don't and don't expect or accept it

dinner was great and I over ate, had a hard time staying awake long enough for lockdown,,,,my older hens are roosting a bit early but the pullets and younger birds are messing around until dark

Jim, nice to have that kinda "good company" and you didn't even have to go to church for the help

bbl, need to get picking again

I agree MLH, I love the cooler weather too, but not too cool.

I got caught up on all my laundry yesterday.

Carol, I had DH stock up on feed a few days ago also. Luckily it was still $12 per 50#, hence the stockup. Still need some scratch, though.

Yes dad, I mean Jim. I know the chickies go to bed earlier because it is getting darker earlier, but the day I mentioned it was a huge time difference, like 6:30 instead of 8pm like it was the night before.

Ang, the only true way to know is when they either crow or lay an egg.

Sorry! Hmmm...... you should pretty well know at 12, I'm thinking, but I'll have to look back at pics to be sure. The boys combs should be getting a lot redder. My boys were crowing at 5 months, I think. And so far, they are all really good as far as temperament. Hope it stays that way. I make sure to hand feed them treats daily. As far as laying, I think my girls started between 18 to 20 weeks. HTH

Gotta stop reading & get ready to leave. Road trip to Seymour today. Enjoy the day, everyone!

Thank you Terri and Tiki

flet so bad when I first cracked it (over my compost can) I just went "oh CRAP!" and didn't even look too close. Yelled at myself, went back out and took a closer look. It was getting dark but I could see well enough. Just wish now I had looked close sooner so I might have seen if the chick was still moving when I cracked the egg. I am hoping the others are viable but since I wasn't the one that actually moved the eggs (neighbor came running with them, remember?) I don't know if maybe they were viable but then were handled too rough? Wait and see?

Cindlady~ why would I want to dye Broody Butt's back end???? Already know she's not pooping!

(sorry , not enough coffee yet).

Got to get moving, another chipmunk needing to go for a ride to the state land, third one in 2 days. they aren't too thick because we keep up on them. Just want to be as rodent free as possible before the snow flies. The fewer things to attract predators, the better. Besides, MAYBE
fl.gif
I'm going to be a chickie grandma soon!

FT~did you get to FF? I went yesterday and Nutrena pellets are on sale @ 12.95 for a 40 (which is what it was but the new "regular" price is $14.95~ouch).

Terri~please keep us posted on your success, ok?

Unkadan~ you have a high tunnel??? I am soooooooo, incredibly jealous!!!! Know what you mean about the organic paperwork. My gardens have been "organic" for almost 10 years but when I looked at the hoops you had to jump thru to certify, I said "NEVER MIND". No clue how cold we got last night, I overslept this morning and my old high/low tracking thermometer died and I need to pick up a new one.

ANYONE~would really appreciate any tips/hints on how to candle a brown egg. Was going to get a candler but all FF had was a fancy flashlight with a cord!

Forgot to mention that I have NO clue what these chickies will be if they hatch. The "top" roo is a beautiful Lakenvelder and his flock is a mix of 2 lac hens, 1 black star, 1 polish mutt?, and 2 ???? The other, younger roo has a little brood of 1 BO, a couple production whites, and again???? Got my fingers crossed. Really hoping to get some pretty hens to go with my black stars (which I now know is what they really are).
AND, since they were being brooded by a DUCK, who knows???
