Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

I am so sorry to hear about Bob DrH
hugs.gif

Oh Tiki, that is beautiful! Thank you so much for posting that.

Well thanks BBP. I have been "fortunate" enough to have all sorts of sicknesses or injuries come up since starting my flock. Unfortunately, I share because it hurts me every time it has to happen. So i guess i shouldnt share since its bothers some...?

We all have differing opinions of what level or extent of additional care we are willing to put into our animals. When my children are older perhaps my attitude will be different. Perhaps not. It's too bad I feel that I have to explain myself. When was the last time you or someone you know had to say a prayer and cry for the chicken they had to cull? Oh wait, that was me today.

We are ALL different and should respect each other . Because one thing we ALL have in common is a human heart that get bruised easily by words written or spoken. Some easier than others.

Have a good night everyone
Heather

Yep CC. That is going to be one spoiled chicky baby if it makes it. Things are looking promising so far.
jumpy.gif
Was out drinking when I checked this morning and mom was trying to feed it her own pellets. Silly momma. Still parked on the nest by the way. Chicky baby, from here forth will be referred to as "Noodle" (well, I already have, if you remember, Stirfry, Crockpot, Fricassee and Soup) had found the mash I made from a little "chicky water" and starter crumbles and was pecking at it. 2nd attempt actually. First time mom ate it all! Can't blame her, she was hungry!

Wait til hubby hears of my next project for "us"
gig.gif
. I am working on plans for an addition to the coop. A little brooding room connected to the coop on the east side. Anyone gets bored, (yeah, I know right?) I would welcome some design suggestions.
Starting a little early, aren't ya, Vic?
lau.gif
I expect to hear that outta the old retired guys on here, but you?
gig.gif

And see, Bigfam? I get mixed up with Cind all the time. That's fine by me. I know who they mean, usually, when my senility isn't kicking in.
lau.gif
Yeah, yeah. I know it isn't often.
wink.png

I love the name of Noodle too. Too cute! And if you don't want mom trying to feed Noodle adult feed, which can be very, very bad for new babies, just feed mom the chick starter too. It won't hurt her. It doesn't have the extra calcium, but she isn't laying any eggs now anyway.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the next thrilling chapter of "As The Egg Turns", I had 3 broodies in the coop. One was on 8 eggs, one was on 2 eggs and one was on a golf ball.
roll.png
Well, I candled them & only found one infertile. (No Jim, it wasn't the golf ball). Well, my lone lav orp hen has repeatedly decided that the nest with the (now) 7 eggs in it is the only nest that she can lay her egg in. I have 7 nest boxes for 13 hens, BTW. So I have been removing her egg each day. Well, now one of the LO roos has decided that he has to "help" the LO hen "prepare" the nest for laying her egg in. By the time I discovered the shenanigans, one almost-due egg is missing & there is yolk on some of the remaining eggs.
somad.gif
And mama broody butt was naturally ousted from her nest and was too afraid to return. The following day, continuing the same pattern, the roo chases broody out from the nest so, in fear of any more eggs breaking, I stuff the remaing eggs under broody #2, who had the brains to pick the least desirable nest. I also stuck a golf ball in broody #1's nest just so she didn't think all of her eggs were gone when she finally returned. I then went back to the house to watch the drama on the cameras & prevent further stress on the ladies. In the meantime, broody #2 gets off her nest and all the eggs.
he.gif
Almost 2 hours later, neither broody have gone back to her nest.
barnie.gif
So, out I go again. I grab all the eggs (6 from nest 1, 2 from nest 2) and stuff them under Mrs. Golf Ball. I have no idea what she was thinking going from 1 to 8 in a matter of minutes, but I wasn't really caring. Just so long as she sat on them for long enough to get the bator up to temp, which was another dilemma since the darn thing only holds 7 eggs. Well, she did stay on them, even though one of her sisters decided that she had to lay in her nest with her. Thankfully, no roos wanted to assist even though they kept coming in there to supervise.
smack.gif
When DH got home, I put all the eggs in a box & had him help me move them & mama into a rabbit hutch in their own semi-private area. Unfortunately, we had to lock her in there overnight because she wasn't thrilled with the new surroundings, but when I checked on her this morning, she was glued to that nest. And the best part of the whole ordeal? I heard some faint peeping!
wee.gif
They aren't due to start hatching til tommorow, though, so keep your fingers crossed that my 3rd (choice) broody is going to be a good mama. The first 2 broodies promptly forgot about being broody, but the 1st one was on her nest for a month, so that is understandible. Long story short, my SIL & nieces came to lock up when we were gone overnight & decided to take her eggs, not knowing they were fertile.
hit.gif
At least they were only 8 days along. But now we've got peepers!
celebrate.gif
And you should have seen the looks on the flock's faces when they heard the peeping. About 9 of my hens were all laying down on hay bales in the corner and they were all tilting their heads this way & that trying to figure out the sound. This is the first time any eggs have hatched out there so this is a new experience for them. When the eggs started peeping, they all got super quiet & were all looking like a bunch of old biddies sitting in a waiting room waiting for a child birth. It was a riot! Now I know why they call chickens biddies.

And with that, I say sweet dreams, all!

HI All!

BBP... 10 years ago I would have jumped at the chance to get your goaties....now, I don't think I could "keep up" with them.
sad.png
Hope you find homes for them and your roo.

tiki... that was a nice post
hugs.gif

Bf4m.... You got to do what you got to do... If it's suffering or wasting away... it's better to end it early.

DrH...
hugs.gif
I'm sure you found a nice place for Bob.

Well, apparently one of the male guineas just couldn't stay off the road.... I now have 2 male guineas instead of 3.
barnie.gif
Now it didn't bother me at first (dumb bird) but on my way to town I realized that who ever hit him swerved into the other lane to get him!
somad.gif
rant.gif
barnie.gif
He was spread over about 25 ft. in the left lane! You could clearly see where he was hit and where he landed.
somad.gif
Intentionally hitting ANY animal pisses me off!
Momma and the keets are getting restless... going to have to rig up a safe place for them to move around. Watching the keets try to fly is so cute but I know it can also get them into trouble!

Well.... Got to make the girls their mash and off to bed. Long, long, long day for DH tomorrow/today... Sat!!! 7am. to about 10pm. at work! Poor guy

Cind... wishingpeacetoallthecritterswholeftthisworldtoadyandjoytothosewhoenteredit!

early to bed, early to rise.. I woke up at 5AM and couldn't force myself to go back to sleep. got up, made a pot o cuppa, caught the first cuppa in a cup, more like esspresso..

went back out after locking up the birds and used my secret weapon on the valve cover.. Annie suggested I use Easy Off oven cleaner.. I left it on over night.. I hope it works.. I don;t care if it takes the paint off, so much the better,, I am going to paint it anyhow..

Heads up.,.. this week is the steam engine and tractor expo over at Edgar, Wisc.. we try to get there every year.. they have a LARGE flea market along with the tractor show.. small gate fee..
a museum.. log cabin,, old school house.. steam engines running machinery, threshing, log sawing, rock crusher, lots to see.. somebody asked about this awhile ago,,

Kim, might want to add an extra day of "vacation" to go with us ? Friday would work for the outing.. bring the kid's computer with you this time,, then out of sheer boredom he will feed the critters..

quite a few roosters singing this AM.. I had only one, but the new guys are learning the song.

Once the young roos start to crow, the pullets should not be far behind with egg laying..

I bought 10 bags of laying crumbles just in anticipation..

going to go turn the inmates loose.. check the trap .......

chilly morning in the north country,,,,,,,38º

Heather you made the right choice, too many folks play nursemaid and extend the suffering to both the critter and the caregiver

Jim "man of rainbow colored tractors"--- kinda late to mention it but there is a great line of products out there called "Krud Kutter" bio-degradeable cleaners that work well,,,,Menards, Ace, FF, Home Depot

after it dries off I plan to pick beans and decide if the plants get tilled in yet, planted bush beans for the 1st time in years and won't do that again, I have much better luck with pole beans "what was I thinking?"

the voles continue to feast in the gh even though my cat is spending the days out there,,,,maybe she is just napping in the warmth

I need to get some of the tillage radishes planted in the rested garden area, that involves setting up the garlic beds 1st so I don't over seed that,,,,decisions, decisions

found a BCM and a BlueBlkCopper Marans rooster of very good quality, now for a 4hr road trip to get them,,,no matter how hard I look every chicken I find is always a road trip here,,,grrrrrr

MORNING ALL!
frow.gif

Jim~that would be me that asked and thank you! We have it on our calendar and plan to go either Friday or Saturday ourselves, depending on weather.
CC~ that was the "chickie" out drinking!!!
lau.gif
WOW! your eggs have more "mileage" on them then my Noodle had before she hatched
big_smile.png

Great morning read!
caf.gif

BF4ME~ Ditto
hugs.gif

CINDLADY~ That's the difference between a sad accident and MURDER! I have been known to chase down people that I see intentionally hit an animal
rant.gif
(or hit someone's pet then not stop)!!! Yes, I do tend to overwork my guardian angel at times
wink.png
(my poor hubby)

WE HAD FROST THIS MORNING! Fortunately it was just a tap and mostly out in the field. Probably another chance for us Sunday pm. I buttoned up the coop last night, have to keep the baby warm
hugs.gif
big_smile.png
No picking on me, FT.
wink.png
BTW~Broody Butt is shaping up to be a very good chickie momma! Even let me "babysit" yesterday while she popped out for a quick dust bath and a major "broody poop"WOW!
ep.gif
the fumes from that stuff could peel paint! Soon as I put Noodle down and she peeped, in shot mom and right into the nest they went
thumbsup.gif
Later, I gave mom a small piece of a sweetcorn left over from dinner and it was cute watching her tear off little bits to feed to Noodle. Like I said,,, a very good momma
cool.png

Now it's outside to take the covers off the maters and get some work done before the rain.

HAPPY WEEKEND EVERYONE!

Morning everyone, I was up early too, 5am is extra early for me.
I have a ailing Boxer who's 10 and he isn't eating, not sure whats wrong with him he's going to the vet Monday, but he woke me this morning by trying to get up and falling back on his bed next to mine and slamming the nite table and scarring the bejesus outa me................ So I just got up............ I love my dogs but when they get older they sure can have you running before your feet even hit the ground........... sheeesh thought the house was coming down.
Speaking of dogs, Jim how is Momma and the pups? Are they liking that new puppy food better still or have they reverted to refusing to eat it unless Annie gives them a can of yummies too .....LOL I miss them coming running when I go out in the morning, and we were only there a weekend, LOL
We would love to join you guys for the show, but don't think it will work, Adam has school till 2, then a 40 minute drive home, pack up and then the long drive up, so unless this show starts late, it won't work for us. I think Adam would have really enjoyed this kind of thing though Maybe next year. Glad the parts are coming along, I still think you need purple hehehe. Oven cleaner just may work on the grease, I never tried that 1 b4, so let us know how that goes. We will see ya sometime Friday Late afternoon 6 I'm aiming for, but could be a bit later.
LOL about the computer and the boy, he would just play his games or guitar so that probably wouldn't work............... I hollered enough after last time if he don't feed my critters this time, he's in hot water, because my neighbor is gonna be checking on the animals, early Am b4 the boy wakes up, and also at night. So she will feed if she see's empty bowls, then the boy will loose his privileges of driving my car, and his internet. Well gotta go finish chores horses are probably ready to go out in the field, and I need to clean my baby chickie pen.....feathers every where!!!!!!!!........ Have a great day all.........Kim

brand new baby peeking out from under mom!

warm sun in the run so I let mom and baby out for a bit today. Mom's trying to take a dust bath and baby's getting caught in the "crossfire" You have to look close to tell which are spots (on her head and shoulders) and which is dirt!

Had them first in the garden by themselves but mom kept her in the shade and mom really wanted in the run so I let them switch. In the process the other 3 ladies got out and I held my breath but they each just checked Noodle out and then wandered off, whew! Kind of surprised mom let them near but she didn't seem concerned. Not bad for a first short outing. Wasn't planning one this soon but mom REALLY wanted out to be a chicken for a while
