Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

brand new baby peeking out from under mom!

warm sun in the run so I let mom and baby out for a bit today. Mom's trying to take a dust bath and baby's getting caught in the "crossfire" You have to look close to tell which are spots (on her head and shoulders) and which is dirt!

Had them first in the garden by themselves but mom kept her in the shade and mom really wanted in the run so I let them switch. In the process the other 3 ladies got out and I held my breath but they each just checked Noodle out and then wandered off, whew! Kind of surprised mom let them near but she didn't seem concerned. Not bad for a first short outing. Wasn't planning one this soon but mom REALLY wanted out to be a chicken for a while

awww how cute!

Hmmm seems my post went missing again!!

Good morning BYC'rs!

Some advice:
Doing a thorough coop/run cleaning today-removing old pine shavings and sweeping out. Coop is aprox 10 ft by 25 ft...with mostly old cement uneven floors. How many of you wash and disinfect the coop? How often?
It would take forever to dry it out and dont want them in a damp coop for days.....but also thinking it may be time to wash it down?
I always put DE down under the pine shavings...and am thinking this will be the last clean out for the winter (Deep litter methods) unless it gets disgusting in the next month or two.

Vicki, what a cutie! I'm so excited for the next hatching season :)

I have a female cardinal that is really worrying me and my family. She has been running into the house windows, then perching on the car and playing in the mirrors, then hitting the windows again. I'm so afraid it's like sick or something, but the DNR hasn't even answered my calls

We had a chcikadee join me for coffee this morning-loiterally!!! Landed first on my kindle, then coffee cup then jump on my hand. Few mins later my DD went out walked up and it flew on to her shoulder! I will post pic later.
The cardinal is probably reacting to its reflection...then gets dazed

Early Afternoon All! First off I want to thank all of you for what I know are heart felt condolences! I was doing pretty good today until I got on here then the tears came again. Cheeks were wet all day yesterday. That's right I cry and I don't care what anyone thinks! But don't think I won't shoot you in the face if needed! Tiki that was very special Thanks!

Cind I started to dig a hole for him but couldn't finish it. Ended up using the tractor. Yes it is a very special place! That really sucks about the guinea! Agree with Vic but I'd handle it a bit differently. Guaranteed they'd never do it again! Bigz

Ang, one simple word. Never. I rake it, sweep it, get rid of the cobwebs & lay new pine shavings with a layer of DE or Sevin mixed in.
Like you said, it would take forever to dry it out, so I never get it wet in there. Mold is a worse enemy to chickens, IMHO. I'd say instead of washing it all down, get some Oxine, dilute it down and lightly mist the entire coop with a spray bottle. Oxine is a disinfectant that will do no harm if breathed in. Try to do it in the morning so it will be thoroughy dry in the late afternoon, then lay your DE & shavings sometime before roost time. But that is just what I would suggest.
