Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Well all we are home, I have never seen my dog so down as when they opened the kennel room door... there he laid ears sagging looking so very dejected and lost, he perked right up when he seen me and started doing his slinky happy your here dance wagging that tiny tail at me. He even ate an entire Tuna on toast sandwich for me when we got home........... my lunch hehehehe, Dr said he thinks he has some kinda lymphoma, that is causing his intestinal walls to harden and not absorb his food. They did give him a steroid shot this morning, so hope that is what is making him feel better and he continues to eat. They charged me another 169.00 dollars for the last 2 days, which is actually less than I thought it would be,, so that is at least some relief on my check book. They sent along 3 cans of SD canine hospital food, will try that at around 3 and see if he eats it. He has always been a fussy eater, and prefers people food over dog food, so will do what I can to get him eating anything. Burger, Chicken Tuna, Salmon, are some of his favorites, toast and eggs as well as cheese. Think I will buy him some cottage cheese and some yogurt. or probio to get his system flora BACK IF HE KEEPS EATING. so anyway will keep ya all posted. Kim

Sorry about your pooch.... SD is one of the worst foods out there... ugh.... the company gives alot of $$ to support vets and the research, I suspect that is why the vets carry it... much better off with your tuna, chicken, burger and salmon for sure!

Here is a recent pix of my Penedesenca partridge rooster I need to probably get rid of or my hens will be a stressed out mess with him and a BCM rooster... they both get along fine, and he is friendly yet cautious.... beautiful rooster and is getting the crowing down much better than last month...

My Swedish Flower Hens are coming from out East. Don't know anyone locally who has them. They are rare in numbers, so maybe people will get their numbers up if they are more well known. They are hardy for Wisconsin Winters, lay a lite brown egg, and tend to be mild in temperament. I will let you know as I experience them.

Pat

OurFlyBabies from Plover, WI carries the Swedish Flower birds... I almost got some from them this spring... but went with BCM and Penedesenca's instead... was nice cause I could pick them up rather than have them shipped.

Hello everyone! So far behind...hope all is well.
Got two beautiful Ameraucauna hens from Gneta this weekend. The kids named them Star and Joy. Had to pen them off though because the rest of the flock were picking on them horribly. Hopefully in a few weeks we can try again.
Looking for some advice on our red star Grace. A week and a half ago I noticed that the feathers on her back way back near her tail were curling. Today I was out giving them a treat and I noticed that her butt was really dirty. All the other birds have fluffy feathers, but hers is all matted with poop (I think) Any ideas what this is? She seems totally normal otherwise. Should I be worried? Thanks guys!

Afternoon all!
Well I've had a day....The critters are fine as are the cats and majority of the dogs. All except for one. Buddy, DH's dog, blew out his knee yesterday afternoon. I had to go to dinner with the DH and his boss, so I put the dogs out and brought then in right before I left. Everyone was fine and when we got home a few hours later, Bud was non weight bearing on his left hind. Took him to the vet today and they did x-rays-again. X-rays confirmed what the vet thought it was. Darn. So now, we have options but some aren't really options. Surgery is what is needed but we can't afford it so we have other avenues to go down. We are taking it one day and one step at a time. The first thing is to keep him quiet and rest his leg and take him out only on a leash. Then if in 1-2 weeks he's exactly the same, without surgery then we will have a hard and difficult decision to make. Another option is to try a "stabilizing" boot. She (the vet) is not to thrilled with those since the fit is crucial but the boot had to be molded and then it can be hard to fit. There is another vet in the practice who has a client using one, so my vet is going to talk with the other vet to get the down low on how it's going with that other dog.
Of course, there is a good to great chance that if we some how can manage to be able to afford the surgery for one leg, the other leg will need it to. Then there is the front elbow that has issues too, and after the other surgeries, might need surgery too.The surgery is ~$2,000 per leg and he is 8. That is getting old to be putting a dog through tough surgeries and hard/long recoveries. So there is much to consider. I'm having the x-rays looked at by the Orothopedic surgeon to get her/his take on how back Bud's joints are. Then we will know more, and what to expect.
So right now, we are in "wait and see" holding pattern for the next week or so. So lots of prayers are being said here...

Welcome to all the newbies!!! Great to see you here!

Vicki-! Whoo Hoo...Sheldon did indeed say that quote. I love Big Bang. Have all the seasons on dvd. Sheldon cracks me up although half the time I just want to smack him!

Good Morning from Bear Chase Ranch in the Northwoods of Wisconsin.

I just joined and am new to chickens. Have 2 Barred Rocks (rooster and hen) and 2 Black Australorps. Just purchased two Citron Spangled Hamburgs and three Swedish Flower Hens. Both new groups have a rooster. Looking forward to some great eggs and new chicks.

Pat
Hi there-I noticed you are from Butternut. My mom grew up in Glidden, and we have a cottage there. My aunt has a vacation home in Butternut. Actually a lot of my family is headed up there for the weekend. Beautiful place

Can't remember is she laying yet? Sometimes, some lay hens get smutty from the laying process. Also sometimes the heat can cause chickens to be a little smutty in the rear end area. You can give her some Vitamins and Electrolytes. That might help. Also maybe a little yogurt would help too. Since she is acting normal I'd just keep an eye on her and give her a little boost with the V&E's. If she starts to develop any illness symptoms then you'd treat according to what she "has"

Evening all!
GR~so glad the old guy is home where he is loved. If it is some form of Lymphoma, you are right. To heck with the "hospital" diet. Let him eat and enjoy what he wants. He's a good boy (tell him that a lot!) and has earned the right to be spoiled now. Hugs to you both and keep us posted

I am so sore right now I am very soon going to recliner and STAYING in recliner!!! So proud of myself when I started the day early and got a whole batch of chili starter made (will can later when it cools off in the house) and then I got stupid
sickbyc.gif
! Drug everything, literally, out of the coop, primed and painted the entire inside including the ceiling, cleaned the roost unit while it was drying then painted the inside a nice semigloss white. While the paint dried I gave the floor a good Oxine scrub. Hubby had to come see what I was doing and got put to work replacing the door posts and sill to fix air leaks. He then took pity on me and did the last coat of paint on the ceiling. Then it was drag everything back in, clean the windows, put the roost ladder back up and Sevin in the nest boxes, DE in the poop box and on the floor and finally new straw in the nests, new wood chips in the poop box and on the floor. Finally, place the new waterer with the duel thermostat. (Wiring for the waterer and lights goes in next week). Whew!

I think the chili starter canning may wait til morning. Now, where did I put that ice cream????

Wow Vicki! Good work! I am in my recliner too BTW...that lake house nearly killed me cleaning it today! I am not used to 6 1/2 hours work in a row for sure! To think I used to do 9 to 9's all the time and then go out on top of it and work the next days too! Sheesh...I sure wish I still had that stamina. I bet your coop looks awesome though! I need to start doing the winter countdown here too...first thing is to pick up all stuff that snags the hose! Man I hate that!

The hen in the barn had 9 as of this morning. SO cute! Many have feathered feet...not sure what to make of this cause there werent any feather footed roos in there! I know I gave her some eggs but I thought they were all Ameraucanas? All I can say is that I have some very interesting crosses here! I am going to take the camera out with me tonight and see what kind of shots I can get.

My horse is STILL lame! DD20's horse seems to be a bit better. SHe took him out for a quick farewell ride this morning (she went back to school today) and said he still had a little "hitch" at times...Commander wont even walk for me...I soaked his foot in Epsom salts yesterday and am putting a tee tree oil salve on the injusry to see if it will draw out some of the infection. Of course he got into something else yesterday and has some new skinned parts on his legs! I am thinking he needs a padded stall! He has not been here very long and has gotten so beaten up--I feel so bad for him!

Good news on the quail front...the one that was spraddle legged is fine now and the really little one that couldnt figure out how to get up (after 12 hours of being hobbled) is now OK too! I thought for sure I would end up culling it but it seems fine now! Now it just needs to GROW! I swear it is 1/4 the size of the others...maybe there is something else wrong with it?

On that constant broody...I had 2 BO's and that is how they were too! Maybe it is the breed? I was glad to see them go away for sure! I wont have any more just because of that! THey are very nice looking birds but had way too many troubles for me.

Separating roos from youngstock again this weekend...there is one that is way too aggressive and I dont want him in with the babies...now I just need some buyers!!! (or maybe a sharp knife)

OK--going out to get some baby pics...if I dont come back you will know that I have been eaten by my birds!

Evening All...Welcome bearchaser, glad you found us...good folks here!

Vick I buy mine from holostic horse www.holostichorse.com/poultry
Can you share your chili starter recipe?

I have a couple waterers sitting on concrete blocks in the shade for the flocks during the day. They prefer to be lazy in this weather...kinda like me.

Good to hear that L is doing fine Doc...Best Wishes for a fast recovery.

Hope your boxer is doing better GR...I know just being home helps.

Just received one of the eye doc bills today for the laser treatment...$1475.00....guess I'll be driving my ranger another year....dang. I know eyesight is priceless...dang

Later...bigz
Don't think that link worked...just google it instead.
