Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

okay question for anyone who makes pies and freezes them. What is a good receipe for pie crust to follow and what steps do you take to make sure it doesn't come out mushy/soggy.

Our 4-H club is working on making Dutch apple pies for the community center food pantry holiday baskets- we made 50 pies today that will be frozen and then put with the baskets so that the people who receive the baskets can bake them following the instructions given.

We used to freeze pies and the best way we found to defrost them was @ 400 degrees

Now I can pie filling and freeze squash for pies.

Just came home from the theater downtown. We were treated to the inaugural concert of the Waupaca Area Orchestra. They were fantastic! If any of you have a chance, you should check out Wega Arts online http://wegaarts.org/ For this little burg, it is one of the few positives. The Theater has been restored to what it looked like in the '40s; it is like walking into a time capsule. The acoustics are phenomenal for live music! The only drawback of the evening was the smoke surrounding the town from people burning leaves..... you cannot have a few chickens but you can pollute the entire town burning your yard waste.........

Today I spent time doing a little comparative shopping; checking to see what houses were selling for that were comparable to mine.

Hi All!

Hope things are going better for everyone! Pretty much same old here.
I did do one thing interesting today. I had an item appraised today. A local church had some experts in.

This was my great grandmother's Iron Lion Bank. She saved dimes in it to pay the taxes on the house! There are hundreds of iron lion banks out there but neither I, or the experts there had seen this style. He's pretty big as these types of banks go too. 7" x 9 1/2". I don't plan on giving it up, but I wanted to get it appraised for insurance reasons. Also, I think my kids would respect it more if they knew it was worth something.
Because it's so different (try looking up Iron Lion Bank) he's valued it at a min. of $200 and perhaps as much as $500. I found a place on line that dose appraisals for $10. I sent them a bunch of pictures and what else I knew of it. They will even certify it. I'll let you know ow it goes. IF YOU EVER SEE ANOTHER ONE LET ME KNOW PLEASE!
Anyway, that's my big deal for while! LOL

Well, better finish up and get to bed.... Night All!

Good Early morning! At least that's what the clock says. judge it's that time of year for less eggs as well as all winter with the less light factor. Was getting 5+ a day then the other day got 2 then 4 yesterday got 5 again.

Cind that would be a neat family heirloom to pass on some things are worth more than money. I have more of that type of things than I really should but can't let go of them. Laura wants to come along to see her fam so the trip to get Moe would be on a weekend. We'd come and get him on a Sunday morning if that works for you? You figure out which one would work for you. Think the back needs to get some exercise feels more like muscles than anything now. Should do some stretching today. Have a hearing test tomorrow good thing it's not a listening test.

I have not been on for a while and I skipped a bunch of posts. Happy Birthday to all the October baby's. Sorry about all of your losses and illnesses.
Leg mites= Neem oil and NuStock..works wonders
The batch of chicks are not thriving outside..the weather sure is cold even for Wisconsin. I was almost tempted to bring them in the house. Almost..
The imported Orpington are doing quite well on the other hand.
My egg production is way up since starting the FF. I have 6 egg layers and was down to two eggs a day. Now I average 4. Feed cost so far is reduced by 1/4. I add ACV to drinking waters too, plugged in now. Only part I hate about winter. I have one Muscovy duck that should be hatching out her eggs this week, I am worried about the other one who is not due to hatch till the end of November. Dang cold weather.

Best pie crust for freezing!!

All-Butter Pie Pastry:
2 ½ cups unbleached all-purpose flour plus additional flour for work surface
1 tsp. salt
1 Tbs. sugar
½ cup unsalted butter (2 sticks), cold, cut into 1/2-inch cubes and frozen for 10 minutes
3 Tbs. sour cream
1/3 cup ice water, more if needed (Vodka works too)

Good Morning all!
Not much going on here! Just drinking my coffee and then I'll got out to the critters and take care of them.

Judge-DrH is right. It is the time of year for hens to not lay as well. They need at least 12-14 hours of light. Some breeds lay well no matter what and some breeds are seasonal layers. I use lights in my coop. I just turn them on when I go out to do chicken chores and turn them off at dusk. If I was serious I'd put my lights on timers early in the morning and then have them shut off at duck. Jim keeps lights on his 24/7.

Ghost-Sorry about your Tigger.

Well back to the coffee..

The last two days our 17chickens gave us no eggs at all. Is that normal?

What type of chickens?
How old are the chickens?
Sometimes certain breed chickens take a break during the winter. Others slow down during winter. A break is good and allows them to get back into production come spring.
If you have cold hardy Wisconsin chickens and they are under 5 or 6 years old you should have some laying.
