Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Hi All!

DrH... Got the letter from the Humane Society.... $30 for spay or neuter for a cat and that includes rabies and FVRCP vaccines! Neil just got 2 cats! LOL
I would call and see if you can get in on the SNAP program.

Bl4... LOL My kids send me those pictures all the time! Nice little starter kit!;)

Wow... getting real tired already....

FT... hope all works with Codey and the kitty... her playmate will be ready end of Nov.

TO... that really sucks and is scarey! :hugs Could they have gotten into something? Bad feed. some leftover poison hiding in a corner, a poison plant?

Jim... I pretty much figured a puppy too, I think a while ago you said you found one on line but it was a ways away.

GR...Good wishes for Snowflake! :fl How long was she gone? Did you find Sissy too?

I'm sure I missed stuff... sorry CRS brought on by tired.

My plan to vote between 2 &3 worked great! Figured I'd go after the "lunch voters" and before the after work voters. Didn't have to wait at all!
Well, critters seem to be OK They are not happy with the cold... they'll adapt.
Night All!

Yes Cind I found Sissy, she was hiding behind the hay bale, and when I started calling for her she came out just then is when Adam got the pile down enough to grab the chicken and as soon as I seen her I knew it was snowflake, she is still alive this morning, bad leg still tucked under her, I made her an egg, gave her more water, and plan to give her a bath as soon as I get everyone else taken care of, then maybe start therapy on that leg and see if we can't get it going again........ she can move it like in pull it away from me, but other than that....... it doesn't look injured or broken but she is so dirty and full of yuck, its hard to say just yet....... yesterday I was much more worried about getting water and food in her...... her crop seems big yet for an over night and she didn't eat much of her breakfast, not sure if its because I added a 1/4 TS of Garlic powder, or she just hasn't yet digested last nights food......... I hope nothing inside is wrong or screwed up inside, that after so long she can't digest her food..... it would really suck to loose her now, after she has fought so hard to live.... how she wiggled her way to the very end of the pile after 3 weeks is beyond me, but had she not gotten to that small opening I would never have known she was under there, I looked several times when looking for her after she first disapeared with a flash light and never seen or heard anything...... this is just so weird.......
Any advise anyone on getting her a bath and working with that leg........???? Kim
I'll post some pictures from yesterday mornings breakfast session with the girls and 1 of snowflake later TTFN

Morning all!
Just getting ready to go outside and get the chicken chores done!

TO-I called you about your chickens.....left a message....Sorry about your show stock.

H&R-Best wished to your Dad for a speedy recovery!

GR-Good luck with your hen...I'm torn on whether you should give her a bath. The heat might help her leg since you might have some muscle atrophy happening but I don't know if she'd get to stressed by it. I'd try to avoid stressing her out. Some chickens like a warm bath and some don't. I'd keep her quiet and warm for another day or so and let her rest then re-evaluate her. She may just need time for that leg to come around. Their maybe a possibility that she broke her back. Without xrays you'll never know and the only one I'd trust to read them correctly would be an avian vet. I had a rooster do that when he hopped off a perch. Just landed wrong. He looked like he had bumble foot when he walked. We had a few vets look at him and finally someone took and xray. That vet had a visiting avain vet in for another case and he took one look at Guapies film and saw the break in his back immediately. The other vets never saw it. Not sure if I helped you but I hope your little girl makes it.

Good morning. Some of us wil be happy about results and some of us will not be, just the way life goes. Have this discussion daily with my competitive twins.

Chickens seem happy. Looks to be nice on Saturday so one last day to make sure the coop is ready for winter weather. Pup is doing good here. Really working on potty training. He is a very quiet dog and pnly has barked once or twice to get the kids to play with him. He stands by the door to go out and most times, he seems like he needs to. I take him out regardless when is by the door and give him a treat.
Speaking of that.. I am sitting in my tiny office at work and all I can smell is the bacon flavored dog treats in my coat pocket.

So Heather, I think you are taking the right step to see how Halden will react to the puppy... can I ask what breed you are looking at? Hope you get to see the Dr and all goes well.

I am investigating changing insurance companies and only have another week to decide. DH's company has three HMP options so need to make sure I have a good one. The one we have right now really jacked up their prices and while I think it is awesome coverage, there is another one that is half the cost that seems pretty good too. I will have to change Dr ( which stinks because I love my Dr) but the kids wont and DH rarely goes to a dr ever anyway. JUst need to see how prescriptions are covered.

Trying to figure out what we are having for dinner tonight. Just have not thought that far in advance.

good morning, voted for Romney, eh Vicki ?? He couldn't have stopped the snow..

Ah yes, now I remember, I did mention the pup and the long trip awhile back.. so much for Clara Voyance, eh TerriO ?

Kim, that chicken has atrophy, no doubt.. what you do not want to do is pull on it much.. It took awhile for it to "stiffin" up, and it should be worked with slowly to bring it around.. go ahead and give her that bath.. If the stress she was in didn't kill her, a bath won't either.. I really do not think that a broken back is the problem..

we had a chicken get locked in a car trunk for over a week.. and another one crawled into one of the holes in a cement block and got frozen in.. I pulled her out, left a few feathers behind, but both of these chickens came out of their ordeals without any mental problems..

Hummer, I like that.. can you just hear me calling for him loudly from the front porch ? "Come Hummer !! get in here.."

I like Pita ,,

He left four piles and a puddle .. Annie got up before I did and cleaned them all up.. I will have to make it a point to sleep in every day from now on..

I took him on a leash when I let the birds loose.. first off, he was never on a leash.. like a cyclone on a string.. then his first encounter with birds was the small flock of young noisy turkeys.. He didn't like that much.. Then he met the noisy geese.. not impressed with them either.. then I turned the 8 guineas and 38 pullets loose.. He just watched the flood of bodies mildly and indifferently.. I don't thing there will be a problem with him and the birds.. He has a couple more sessions with the leash coming, though..

I am going to walk him around the perimeter daily for awhile.. hope that will give him the idea where he should stay..

there was more, but now I forget..

Jim,

is that the best way to intoroduce a dog to the chickens? Keep him on a leash and let them loose? We were thinking of doing that this weekend when it is nice weather. Otherwise he walks out and around the coop with me every time he is out. Have to say hello to my girls!

We have just had the puddles (and I get to clean those up), no piles. Just hard to tell when he is peeing with those short little legs.

Morning again Peeps........
Well my chicken is doing good she has eaten all her breakfast, and drank almost all of the bowl of water, she is not any too happy with the sling holding her, and has been intermittently, trying to get out, she can move that leg back and forth but it is still kinda funny looking and up like pulled to the inside.. I do not think she has any breaks, just she must have been almost on her side with all her weight on the right leg, it is stiff and sore I bet but circulation has apparently been restored. So with some luck and some small exercises maybe she will be ok. She seems much stronger and her comb is no longer purple looking, its nice and bright pick/reddish. and she is now trying to clean herself around the bungees holding her in the sling. She has been pretty calm and not fighting too much. I haven't yet given her a bath, waiting for Adam to wake up he's on his first cuppa........ let him sleep in with the grandson this morning.

I think like Jim I don't think after all she's been through the bath will hurt her, and she must be very uncomfortable full of pooh and stinky....... so I will get that done soon.
Wondering if I should leave her out of the sling for a while, to exercise that leg some, or if that will do more harm than good at this early stage........ Jim What do you think? yesterday when she managed to get out of the sling, she flipped herself over almost breaking her neck trying to right herself.......... so not sure what would be best, maybe will just see how she does and if she just can't stay upright, will put her back in the sling... anyway pictures as promised, I made a big batch of warm oatmeal with yogurt, peanut butter and cranberries yesterday for the girls, and they were havin a ball getting messy with there breakfast......LOL maybe all the peeping and carrying on was what made Snowflake decide to try 1 last time to get out on her own. and TG she did because had she not got into the corner where I could see her she surely would have died under there, and then made my nightmare of last week that I found her dead under there in the spring when we started the coop, come true.....

Good morning....long talk with MLH about chicken diseases. I am doing a necropsy on the last hen today to see if it is the infectious laryngotracheitis or not. There were clear pictures last night while I was researching; having never heard of that particular one...sheesh, most chicken diseases are SO similar! I know that they didnt get into anything...this is a pen that stays inside. The only thing that changed was that I put plastic up to keep the wind out and I was gone for the weekend so they didnt drink the water with the meds in it and no one noticed...so they were stressed and dehydrated on top of it! BUT, no deaths last night...maybe we are clear?
fl.gif
I sure hope so. I have to go out and do a few more things in there...electrolytes and such. Hopefully they will be OK now. Thanks for your concern everyone!

Jim--I fugured if you didnt remember posting about Kansas then maybe you would believe me that I was clairvoyant! Silly guy...actually I was surprised that I DID remember!

I usually am the first one to suffer CRS.
It is very mild here this morning...I am thinking about going out for a ride if the rain holds off...doesnt look like it will though...as much as I dont like when everything is frozen it sure helps with the mud situation! I need it to dry up before it freezes though...I HAVE too run the skid loader through the barn and get my isle back before winter!

Vicki I hope your day gets better!
hugs.gif

Kris--I hope you are taking the pup out without a leash at times...you dont want to make a dog that you are afraid will run away if it gets out of the house!
Good luck Snowflake--I am rootin' for ya! That breakfast you made your chooks Kim made me hungry! I think I am going to come up to your house for my morning meal!

Better get out and finish up...have a great day! TerriOreadyforbreakfastnow

I would let her exercise that leg all she can.. treat it llike spraddle leg .. the more she uses it, the better.. and she is not going to break her neck or anything else by flopping around upside down or otherwise.. just set her upright a couple of times until she quits struggling.. then she will settle down and exercise the leg in a milder fashion.. she will figure out what works for her eventually..

Cind, the leash is a good idea.. that way if the dog lunges at a chicken, you have control and a firm NO will make it understand.. lots of exposure to the chickens while you are in control.. after a couple of days, with most dogs, will be enough training..
