Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Hey all, finally getting to come see what I missed and everyone here is busy I Guess only 10 posts.......

Anyway, Just got off the phone with Adam he is in Erie PA. at the hotel already, Chuck his trainer is home with his family enjoying some needed time I'm sure, but this is alot to ask of a newbie, and his wife I tell ya. So now we are both bored and miserable alone.......Everyone says I will get used to it, and even look forward to him being gone, I can tell you all the same thing that I tell everyone else, thats about as likely to happen as it snowing in July here, we have been together 10 1/2 years, we are like 2 pea's in 1 pod, we do everything together, we think the same, look at things the same.....heck in 10 and a half years we have never even had an argument........... ever, my kids think we are weirdo's because we get along so well, and never fight, I always tell them whats to fight about we both agree how things are and how we want them......... and we work together to keep it that way. No reason to argue over anything. he is my rock and I'm his roll...............hehehehe He would laugh at that one. But its so very true. We support each other when things get crazy or go wrong, and we fix it together......
Neither one of us wanted him to have to go out over the road in the first place, we were hoping he would get a local route after school, and as soon as he can he plans to do just that, but things have not gone in our favor in a quite awhile, so we are doing what we must to get by. He really didn't want to drive truck, but it was the lesser of evils as too where to go after WalMart screwed him over after almost 10 years.........no jobs for untrained men in there 40's....... retraining would include 2 or more years of school, and just what does a family live on after unemployment runs out???????? Because you can only collect it so long.................let alone 2 years, we are sorta victims of circumstances, we really couldn't control.... he looked for work over a year, filled out more applications than I can count, and because he had no high school diploma, no one would hire him.......... so we made the decision for him to go back get his CDL and truck, only because of the circumstances we were facing, it was quicker fix to get us back on our feet. and solved the money issue......... will he always truck now probably, but hopefully after he gets some time in, it will be a local route so that he gets home at least 3 nights a week...........For now we are just gonna have to somehow manage to get by.

Anyway Cind....That would be nice. I don't want to butcher him but I want to have a break from his genes and add some new blood to my flock to keep everyone viable as long as possible. We could trade back in a year.........Graybeard is a nice rooster, he's good with his ladies, and a good protector, not a lap chicken, but you can handle him if ya must..... he is also very pretty and throws some wonderful colored babies....... I have 3 pullets from him this year each a different color, and he does carry the blue egg gene, because my SLW cross lays me a pretty mint green egg almost everyday/.....His match to my only hen this spring was his sister Fileen, and she gave me 2 beautiful males and 2 pullets, but they are like her tanish pink egg.......ask Jim how pretty those roosters were, I hated to butcher them but I can only keep so many and they were related to most of my flock by rooster at least........... so they
had to go..

Hurley what kind of chickens are those they sure are pretty............ I love the females face she is so cute with that floppy comb.....

David.......... I hate to inform you I lost one of your girls today, somehow she managed to drown herself in my stock tank............3 plus acres to roam and dig and bath in and she ends up in the tank............ not sure how it happened but I'm so upset she is gone.....been kicking myself in the arse all day for not keeping them locked up till I got home today.........So Sorry ......I knew I said I would take care of them, and I have, but I never expected this, I have never had any of mine even look at that tank like it was a perch........how she fell in is beyond me, and with 32 other chickens running around here what are the odds it would be 1 of my only 2 redstars.............:hit :hit

H&R I think we quit those at the age of 14, it seemed the kids really didn't want them anymore, so we just do a cake and they always want money so that is what they get...........

So anyway I beet go check them silly critters again, inc ase anyone else is thinking of bathing in a stock tank or getting into trouble...........
Later yall..............Kim

ODr.H is alive!!!!!! Have thought of you many times and was wondering how you've been doing. As a vet with kids know that you've been busy. Good to hear that there is meat coming in for some! Not many shots around here. GR driving truck is a paycheck whether it's long haul or local. It's a trade off money for time. Long haul is your gone for long periods, local is ungodly hours. Sorry to hear about the drowning! Stock tanks are not kind to chickens. Never got paid to stay in one of those fancy motels, slept in the truck. Bl4 wouldn't have a prob fittin in at that party, still wearin it. It'll come back. I swear. Can't wait until the meds are gone for Peatwo, he doesn't trust me anymore.

Evening all,

hope the hunters are happy.. I was a slug today and after 2 12 hour work days and and an 11 hour work day, I was exhausted so I took a 5 hour nap. It felt so good and I didn't want to get up, but the chows had to go for their walkies. Cleaned the coop, I swear the bantams are on a diet, they hardly eat at all. Ghostrider, Sorry about Adam, absense makes the heart grow fonder.
It is ok about one of the ladies. It was an accident. They happen. How are the others doing?

I spent time looking at hatchery reviews. Any one have Colombian Wyandottes? I loved the Golden comets but read they have high egg production but they have a shorty laying life span. Not sure

Have a good night

David

Opening Day To All... Congrats to all those folks that managed to bag some tasty venzun. We have one eight pointer and adult doe that my son shot. I passed on three does...just doesen't seem right. Kinda like butchering the pullets in my eyes. Tough seeing with the fog we had and my eyes.

Glad to hear from you Hurley. Tough about the losses I'll bet. hope you do find time to visit more.

Nice score on the cottage Vicki. you shoulda took two.

Whenever the soap is ready after hunting works for us bl4. Glad you didn't forget!

Time for supper and the lazyboy. Hunting is hard work here on the hill.

The other 2 are doing well David, Blackie is a bit shy and hasn't come out of the mini coop to check out the other girls yet, the 2 red stars were jumping at the chance to be out amongst the other girls, matter of fact that was why I decided after only a week to let them out if they wanted , because the girl I lost tried to sneak out on me almost everyday, when I cleaned up or filled water or food, she would try going around me and sneak out the door, she was also the bravest of the 3 even went after my Roo GrayBeard when he did his little dance for her, he was 1 surprised rooster, none of mine have ever done that b4......... Jewel will be missed, she had quite the personality, and always talked to me whenever I came near the little coop...........she was also I think a good pet she never gave me a fit when I picked her up, blackie does not like to be picked up at all and Star the other RS is a bit shy.......... It's always the good ones ya loose ya know.........:hit

I hear ya on the trucking thing Dr.H......... but I really don't think it should be too much to ask to give them boys some home time 2 days a week, besides that they could use the rest driving all the time is a hard stress filled job, it wears ya thin that's why so many companies have such bad records and tickets for fatigued drivers...thats also why the divorce numbers for truckers are huge....many that we looked up had terrible records for fatigued drivers and maintenance issues....... which could also be solved if they gave the guys a bit of time at home they could do what had to be done to the trucks as well........... I know there's a lot of young unmarried guys driving who would rather just run almost constantly because they want the big bucks, so I don"t see a problem with giving them what they want and the guys that want more home time what they want as well.... but it seems the trucking industry wants to keep them boys out weeks or months at a time, and to me thats just crazy and dangerous.......... Their job is hard enough without having to worry about everything going on at home while they are gone.......... I have read many newer companies are giving there boys more home time... and some use that as a selling point to join there team.......... somewhere there must exist a happy medium...........I hope we find that nitch.........

Well gonna go do dishes and see if I can find me a treat or something for this crazy house chicken, she is basically herself again and I'm wondering If I shouldn't put her back out with the girls, she is going stir crazy in the cage, knocking over the food and water, crawling all over everything at the front of the cage.... What do all think she hasn't yet gained much weight back, but she is frisky and bright eyed, eats good, her molt is almost done, alittle afraid of the 2 roosters chasing her again, and her injured hip???? do ya think she would be safe going back out so soon?..............Kim

Hi Hurley :frow  neat pics.  Sorry to hear about your summer losses.
Delisha~ we don't have the humidity problem as much up here away from the Big Water.  Oh, and thanks for the additional info on the Hedemoras.  Didn't realize they were that small.
TO~my main attraction to the Hedemora is they are a landraced breed that is proported to be the most cold hardy chooks in the world due to the true double layer of feathers and will continue to lay and play happily in the snow down to near 0 temps with no problems.   since we can have some pretty extreme weather up here I thought they would fit right in.  I am not as fortunate (or as obsessed?) as FT to have a barn and an abundance of critters to help keep my girls warm so I find their hardiness extremely attractive.  With that said, after hearing what Unkadan (aka the newest enabler) has, and seeing that gorgeous roo, I have totally been enabled!!!  :lau

Unkadan~That Roo is gorgeous!!!!  You must be willing to share (your price is a bit better than $50 per, right? :drool  )

Well, we have one hit and one miss so far.  Pa is outside hanging a nice 2 yr old spiker one of the boys got and is giving to us.  :celebrate  Nice little deer.  He will taste really yummy.  Our freezer was completely empty of venison and how can you have stew on a cold winter evening w/o venison???  The miss was one of the grandsons.  Dad spent quite a while looking but all eh could find was some white hair so maybe the kid (19 yr old) just nicked a tail or something :fl  .  I HATE IT WHEN THAT HAPPENS :smack

Well now it's time to check on the bird in the oven and get going on the rest of the feast.  Thanks again everyone for all your wisdom about the chooks :old  :hugs

Vicki ... What about Icelandics? They are a land race and very, very cold hardy. I also know someone on here that has some. ;) I'll watch their winter hardiness and let you know. But they sure are pretty!

If she is acting like that, I would turn her loose..

Hi All! Glad to see you popped in ODrH! Nice to hear from you and sorry about your heat stroke in the flock! That is sad for sure! I bet those boys of yours are getting into all kinds of mischief! How did school go! (I hope you passed--LOL!)
Spent the entire day de-mudding my saddle, bridle, pads and covers from the sink-hole episode. Everything is cleaned and reoiled except for the sheepskin cover...I will work on that some more tomorrow. I think most of the muck is out of it. My neck and my back (and my hands) are sore! It sure looks nice though!
DH took in two parts of the junk dump truck and got 300 some dollars. He said that he and DS23 are going to finish it up tomorrow...will be nice to have THAT eyesore out of the yard!

Sounds like quite a few of you will have some nice meat for your freezers! Congratulations! Has anyone gone as far as to figure out what the price per pound of venison ends up being? I always wonder how much it is when you factor in everything...I suppose you cant buy it so it doesnt matter anyway...
DD26 took a couple pics of the cat I found. Take a look:

I think he is a very unusual looking cat!

Well gee...I guess the site wants me OFF! It posted before I even hit submit! Weird...
I am uploading some pics of the birdies I took the other day. I also want to post a video of the horse and the goat playing. I wish I would have had my camera yesterday--they were hysterical!
Later! TerriOgladshedidntlosethepostalltogether!

(PS) now I understand Vicki--but gee those are LITTLE birds!

good PM< Nephew got a 8 pointer.. other nephew missed one.. brother didn't see any bucks. other nephew didn't see anything at all..

I suppose it is OK to worry a bit about winter hardy.. but,,, with everybody in Wisc having just about every breed there is covered, I think it is safe to say that almost all the breeds are cold hardy.. so , pick a breed or two or three and go with them..

just for the record.. feathered legs are not much protection from the cold.. what keeps the legs warm is the chicken squating on them on the roost.. I have never had a feathered legged chicken, and I have never had a chicken freeze it's legs.. just saying....

I have had big floppy comb chickens too that didn't suffer any frost bite.. somebody explained about the humidity.. I concur..

Kim, Adam has to put in his time and take his licks before the gravy position opens up.. some day he can be the one sleeping at home while his trainee sleeps in a motel.. You don't go right to the top during the first week on the job.. every job has it's drawbacks.. you can dwell on it or accept it.. nobody has a conspiracy against anybody.. the company has to schedule the loads..and somebody has to drive them.. If the driver doesn't like it,, it is like at the barber shop,, there is always the next guy in line.. next ?

If you are going to complain like this, it is going to be really hard on Adam..

as far as thanksgiving,, Annie has worked every one of them for the last 25 years.. and a few Christmas'es too.. It is really not that big of a deal when you get right down to it..

.........jimnotbeingmeanjustpractical..........
