Anyone want to come build me a new chicken coop?

I have the "Chicken Disease" too!

My aunt is looking at her old 12'x12' chainlink dog kennel today to see how hard it's going to be to disassemble and bring it over here for me - her husband says no more dogs, so I get the kennel!

It's split into 2 separate sections, so I'll have two new runs, but now I have to get the coops built. I have the plans all sketched up - I even made an extra little area for a broody "box".

The new Cochins are settling in nicely - I love that rooster, he's so gentle! Except one of my little Columbian cockerels is very offended by the new addition - he stands there, all puffed up, looking at him all day. He tries to crow too, but he still sounds like a frog being strangled or something.

Here's two quick pictures of the new guys:

And the Call ducklings and two Indian Runners out swimming the other day....after all my theorizing about the color of those Calls, I think they're just mis-marked Blue Bibbeds after all. I think the brown penciling on the chest-feathers that made me think they were Blue Fawn is just from lots of iron in our water here (fun fact - the color "Blue" in ducks is highly affected by iron levels in the body - lots of iron = lots of brown coloring on the feathers)...you can see the pretty Apricot color coming in on the biggest Runner's chest:

BTW - amyable, did Julie ever get a D'Uccle pullet? I was trying to get a pair of Bantam Brahmas from someone just 20 minutes away from me (I haven't heard back from her though), and she had a D'Uccle pullet too. If I ever hear back from her, I'll get the D'Uccle pullet too - if Julie doesn't need it, I always have room!

Annarie, my calls have the same brown in their feathers as well, and I do not think we have high levels of iron here. I am alse worried about the dark headed one. He seems to be pretty quiet and is spending time just sitting and taking naps. His breathing seems to be a bit labored too. No bubbles or funny discharge coming out of his mouth or nose, but I also do not know how well he is eating right now and what his stools look like. His appetite is a bit off but he is making the effort to catch the minnows in the pool so I am thinking he just has something and will get over it????

Enjoy the day everyone! Looking forward to getting the henna tats tonight!

It wouldn't hurt to get some Poly-vi-sol infant vitamins (the kind without iron - it'll say on the front of the package if it's the kind "with Iron"), and either put a dropper-full in all their water, or mix a few drops of it up with some plain yogurt and honey for him - it just gives them a little boost. Either that, or put a little Apple Cider Vingar in their water - it's supposed to give them a little boost too. I use both whenever a duck seems a little "off".

And I dunno about those brown feathers.

They sure are pretty though!

I love how, in that picture I posted, they're all in their little water tub going, "Hey - we barely fit in here!". They got booted into the smaller cage for a few days because I needed someplace to put the new Cochins. I'm working on the new outside Call duck pen this weekend though! I need to have it finished by the 18th when I go pick up my new White Calls! By the way - babylady4, you don't want a spare solid-Black or Butterscotch male Call duck, do you? The lady I'm buying my white pair from has a few spares! I can send you pictures if you're interested. How many Calls can you fit in that postage-stamp sized yard of yours?

Annarie, Julie hasn't heard back from Amber yet. I think she called 2 weeks ago. Hmm, maybe we will have a chicken train after all

I am dying of heat today, I don't know why but it feels much more steamy than earlier in the week. Keep cool, everyone! DrH, have a nice trip to IN; maybe you should pack some good beer too, huh?

Thanks Amy! Will do! Going to be fishing the Kanakee river for the first time since the late fifies or early sixties tomorrow afternoon. I'm excited! And I guess old-er too. A BIG box of Point in the fridge to take along. My only hope is that there aren't too many want to sample it. Taking a large assortment of cheese, sausage and crackers. Wi. cookin! Hope you all have a good weekend! Sorry about the heat Amy! It'll get cooler... probably.

NE!

We are no longer the knights who say Nee, we are the knights who say...
Geez, Doc, see what you've done!

Hey folks, the volunteer coordinator for the Fox Valley animal shelter sent this out today, thought the Cheeseheads might want to help:

"Dear Volunteers,

Our friends at Clark County Humane Society are in the running for a major grant through the Pepsi Refresh Everything Project.

CCHS would like to use the funds to build a much needed facility to help puppy mill dogs and to provide for their vet care. It goes without saying, this project and organization are NEAR and DEAR to our hearts.

PLEASE vote daily and ask every one you know to do the same!!!"

I voted

Voting goes through the end of the month, you can vote every day.
Almost the weekend, yay...

Well I just lost my entire message and I am way too tired to type it all again...was just adding a couple pics of the new ducks and the story...well, here are the ducks:

And about my Anconas...again too tired:

Dont know what happened...gotta go to bed! I will try to reconstruct that most excellent message tomorrow! Good night! Terri O--wiped out from the fair

That's exactly what I was going to say Pongoid...I LOVE that movie. Cracking me up just thinking about it right now! OK--the Anconas are the ones that I got at the swap in Beaver Dam; arent they gettting big already?

And the story of the ducks is that I saw them peering out of this door:

and watched Mama calling and them struggling to decide what to do. So I run in the house for the camera because they looked so cute with their heads just over the ledge. By the time I got out I found this: and that was the pick I posted previously (my last message) with her outside and all eleven ducklings behind her!

Good safe driving on your trip DrH! Do you have to have an out of state fishing license to fish there? Dont get caught if you dont have one! Might be a pretty expensive catch!
If anyone is going to build coops...please come here too...I think I have overrun my capacity! When those little chicks that just hatched get big I will definitely need more room. I have "Abe" my salmon fav from FM and his girls sleeping in a makeshift one now....they wont go into the big coop because there is no more room to roost and they are a bit timid.
Well, gotta run to work now and then to the fair so have a good one everybody! Terri O

BL4 and I and her 2 daughters had a wonderful girl's night out.
smile.png
I never get that! Thanks again BL4! You are a wonderful friend!

Gonna enjoy that sun today. Yesterday morning I cleaned the big coop out. Day I will clean the little one and the ducks. Then maybe some weeding.
