Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

DrH) No sign of him?

Well today I am going to my girlfriends house to eat some fajitas on the grill then we are driving out to hartland to see her mom's farm! I am so excitied! She told me her mom has a HUGE garden for just herself and I should get veggies to take home. Which I am grateful for! I guess her mom has a boyfriend that lives next door and also has a farm. So two farms!

I'm really excitied. She doesn't have goats or anything. Just chickens and a garden. Oh well. I really wanted some goat milk!

I'll take pictures!

Nope Raiquee. I've been weeding the garden the past few mornings and listening. Sometimes I think I hear something and call out but no response. I know that these things happen but the problem is I've gotten more attached to the important things in life. Don't know how many times the tears have slid down my face and I don't care who knows it. I care deeply about my animals and the people I know. It's the way it is. If someone thinks it's weird or funny then I feel sorry for them. As of this morning I now have 3 viable canidates for Peatwo. He already has a name. It translates into Strong, Brave, Smart, and Beautiful bird. Peatwo son of Peaches! I'm going to wait 3-4 more days and how many ever eggs I get are going in the new bator. Storing them in a carton pointed end down in a draft free constant temp area. Thanks fm for the info on getting them started and thanks BCC for sharing that info with her! And again thanks to all of you good people for your kind words, hope, and for caring. Words can't express how much it means to me. Now I have to go make bread. A warm heel is headed my way. President Starky has a saying. "things are getting better" Hope you all have a good day!

Geesh, lots of tears reading all the posts since last time I was here.

Babylady4, I read about Clyde over in the duck forum last night, and I posted there.

Dr. H - I'm crossing my fingers for a Peatwo from those eggs!

Okay, so I've finally physically started the new Call duck pen. Now, I can hear all you men out there laughing at me, but here's all I got done so far

I just tacked the ends on - I want to frame out the bottom, but being that it's an A-frame and I'm not exactly a math wiz (I failed Algebra 1 twice), I had to tack the ends on to get a measurement of the bottom width. It's going to be 8' x 6' - the enclosed plywood "house" area will be 6' x 2.5' on one end, and the rest will be covered in wire mesh as a "run" area. I'll house all the Calls together in there this winter, until I get around to figuring out what to do about breeding pens in the spring, and then this pen can be re-purposed as a grow-out pen for young birds.

I have a really neat idea for the doors on either triangular end of this pen - I'll post pictures when I get that far. Right now, it looks like that's going to be awhile yet!

So, laugh all you want guys! I know what I'm doing, I really do!

Looks good! Annarie, I can see it! It will look cool!

DrH, what breed was Peaches? I seem to get big mean Roos! Maybe one of his babies could migrate over here??
big_smile.png

Looked into 4H and there are several meetings in my area. one meet on Monday night but no one wanted to go with me so I stayed home. ......next month maybe

too ta loo for now!

Good for you for checking RAIMNEL! They will see how fun it is soon...

Annarie--it looks to me like all you have to do is throw a blanket over that and you will have a cozy little tent to sleep in for tonight! Or maybe your sisters would like to try it out for you just to make sure the ducks will "like" it?

My son used to love when we got big boxes because he would make stuff out of them and sleep outside in them until it rained and the whole thing fell apart. Man, I havent thought of that in a while!

DrH--I know just how you feel....having lost a few creatures myself in the past year...anything can set me off at any moment.

I think I have to trim my turkey's wings. Every morning now there are 1 or 2 out of the pen and I am getting sick of catching them! It never fails that I get a wingtip right in the eye or splattered with mud! Taking a scissors out with me tonight.

I am having a nice iced coffee and then I am off to go and visit my critters...I havent sat out there and talked with them for a while. Tomorrow is plenty of time to tackle this house! What's for supper everyone? Besides Raiquee who is eating fajitas on the grill...dont burn your backside! I hope you score tons of veggies that you can put up to your heart's content! Gotta find that scissors....Terri O

annarie basic algebra always had me befuddled. Unless I could apply it to a real life situation. Never understood it's rules, you know i before e except after c. To me geometry made more sense. But it looks like common sense wins again. Keep goin your doin fine. TO think you know this one. Give a kid a present and they play with the box. That's the truth! I still have a hard time trying not to crawl in one and rolling through the yard. No more down hill though. I felt the hug too. Thanks!

right back at you. Raimnel I will do my best to start you a roo that will be gentle yet in charge, it will come from very good stock! You'd have to confirm from fm but think Peaches was a red/brown sex link male. RIR male with can't think of it now. But I will deliver him to you or anyone just to propogate his genes. N/C! He mated with my red/brown sex linked hens so that's the stock he will come from. Brownie hid from the other girls yesterday until bed time because they were picking on her. But to my relief she came in when called by L at bedtime. The city girl has a way with them too. She too is heartbroken over the losses. One more morning in the gardens then back in the woods. Didn't have the energy or the will to get back out there and kick butt. Will process one more tree then over to the BFF's to clean up what he has. He told me that his neighbor had a cougar in his back yard the other day and that a guy about a mile from him had his horses attacked. The DNR told him that the claw marks on the horse was from a bear. What there's no cougars around here or wolves oh wait there goes one now. Oh that's a yotee or a house cat.

I have certainly heard of a cougar attacking a horse but never a bear! I dont think a horse would stand still long enough for a bear to "creep" up on them.
gig.gif
Now a cougar...that is a different matter since that is what they do. I guess it was just a dumb DNR man. If they pretend they aren't there then they aren't--right?
idunno.gif
Someone in Watertown area supposedly had a cougar attack and kill one of their horses but when the law went to investigate the folks said they buried the horse already. I cnat remember if they dug it up or not but it was proven that it wasnt a big cat. THere was something weird with that situation but alas, I cannot remember.
old.gif
Yup--the old memory is rotting right away!
I am glad that you are making another Peaches Doc! Good for you! Not the same but ya never know...might be even better!

Since I am planning on a big day of getting this place in order tomorrow I think I will head off to bed! Sleep well my friends--talk to you tomorrow! Terri O

DrH) Know I am crossing my fingers for you

If not for the return of Peaches, then for a little one to carry on his name!

Welllll I forgot my camera

Oh well. She had a wonderful farm. We ate fajitas, and rejoiced for her garden is AMAZING. She had banana pepper plants that were as big as tomato plants, and were sooo full of big banana peppers they were choking the plants out! She gave me two gigantic handfuls of those, a handful of the longest jalapenos i've ever seen, a bag of spring greens, a bag of green onions, and about a half dozen pickling cucumbers. Also, 2 dozen farm fresh eggs!

All have been cleaned and nestled into our fridge. I haven't been able to buy fresh veggies lately because me and DH's unemployment got canceled so we have no income
sad.png
And let's face it, veggies are expensive! That's alright, we make do and I'm very grateful for her giving me a grocery bags worth of veggies. She said her favorite thing about her garden is giving produce away to people that would enjoy it
smile.png
How sweet of her.

Next time I go up there I want to bake her some bread for her produce
smile.png
Although she doesn't eat white flour, so I'm going to have to find a yummy recipe with no white flour in it!

Hope everyone elses day is good!

Oh Doc!!! It's been days since I've signed on and I got sick to my stomach reading your post. I'm so sorry brother, I do feel your pain. Having lost six hens to a dumb dog on July 3rd I know how crappy it is. I lost my favorite bird and Jerry Lee is still limping around. I guess this is the downside of being a chicken rancher...
