Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

I have to do all of my birds..depends on how old the chicks are when you get here if I need to do those or not. I have 20 birds and a prospect of 20 chicks. Half of those are for eating so I do not think they need to be done but I am not sure. My NYD hatch of RIR's will need it eventually at least.
When we get our chickens tested yearly, our tester does all our fowl 4 months or older, this includes our peafowl and pheasants as we are a WI tested flock. There are several different chocies as to what certificate you can have for your flock; Individual bird testing- this is only good for a few months, this would be if you are going to just taking a couple of birds to a show- we did this route the 1st year our kids showed chickens at the fair for 4-H. There is WI tested flock and NPIP which needs every bird 4 months or older on your place tested yearly. Hope this helps.

Evening All...Congrats on the job bigfam..hope it turns out perfect for you!

Nice to have the sunshine today. Amazing how much of a difference it makes here.

I have internal pips on the Muscovy eggs! Oh, I hope they hatch ok. Would seriously be a bummer to bring them all this way, clucking over them for over 30 days, misting, cooling periods, hand turning....you ducklings better hatch! 9 look good, got at least 6 internally pipped today.

good weekend evening everyone!

tried to post this from my Kindle earlier but it didn't work. There is a posting on Craig's list in the northern WI (farm and garden) for Edgewood Acres Poultry in Winter WI and they are listing an amazing array of bantams as well as Amaracaunas and among other standards they have 2 breeding pairs of Standard Double bearded Spangle Russian Orlaff hatched on 8/9/12!!!! Too much else to list here but definitely worth checking out!!!

yes, I have caught the enabling bug

hey... I am alive in some sense, My stomach/intestine thing has subsided for the most part, or so I thought. Today it came back a bit but I over did it last night after thinking I was a-okay again.
I am battling a headache, fatigue and a cold...
So now off to take a bath and climb into bed.
snork....that was my nose, it apparently decided to say something...

I don't know if I posted or not, last Saturday apparently the young jaerhon rooster I had in with my other small birds and young uns decided he wanted to be top bird.
SO he and Handsome my Serama roo got into it. I found him Sunday all hunched up and not looking good, so I brought him home with his girl friend Beauty another Serama.
He seemed to rally on Monday and Tues, but was hunched up again despite being in a warm room with a heat lamp, he passed away Weds night/Thurs morning..
I am sooo soo bummed, i brought home Beauty's foster chick a Jaerhon/silkie cross, I almost don't want to take her back to the barn.
I have him in a safe place where I can wait to bury him...

Anyone know of some one with a japanese rooster OR a serama roo?
Let me know...
Off to go kill my nose and sinuses!!
JK...

Oh David...so sorry! I am at this point with my 23 soon to be 24 year old. I came down this morning and there were many, many beer cans and most of the Whiskey DH got for Christmas was gone and there was a strange guy sleeping on my couch! I was silently cheering Tommy on as he crowed. THe kid's head was about 4" from Tommy's cage!

It is a good thing that all was cleaned up by the time I got home today!

Ang--I answered Tash on the hatching thread...I think JIm's eyes are not so good tonight?

Terri, Isn't parenting fun, Back in our day, i don't think we would have dared to do half the crap they do. Hope your 23 year old figures it, out, and yes what fun it is to find a stanger sleeping in your house. My 18 year old is just a junior so if I don't take him back, he basically has a future in fast food. Hopefully he grew up in is absence

Jim, glad you can see a bit better, sounds like you are getting around

BigFam, congratulations!

My neighbor got some chicks yesterday. No clue what type, glad I have another rule breaker in the neighborhood. I will have to stop over and check out the chicks. I think it is a bit early to be getting chicks for me, I want them in the house, then outside as soon as possible. They are so dusty.

have a good night everyone.

even though they are chicks instead of ducklings they will know I am wishing them the best! (their "siblings" got cooked up for the birds yesterday--dont tell them!) I tried to trade them for something, but no takers....

I am waiting for my friend to call to say we are going to Menards...she is another perpetually LATE person (haha BigFam) I am wondering if she will show?

SO, the MEN in the house just had a competition to get the cobweb off the ceiling....DH could not get the whole thing and DS23 hardly jumped, hit his hand on the ceiling and BAM---no more cobweb!

I guess he's good for something!

H&R--that is what I do for my birds seeing as I really only do one show a year (the single bird testing) I dont really know how I would do the whole NPIP or tested flock thing with all the birds I have! I certainly would like to have some type of certification...but really dont see how I could do it. The main reason is that I have an outlet for quail eggs and a chef that is looking for them...but good grief...what a bunch of testing just to sell some eggs?

OK--she has still not called--good grief, the store closes at 9...I need to LOOK at stuff!

we are eating pancakes tonight.

our friend who does our testing has alot of birds themselves(180 +) and they just round them up and do the testing. I'm guessing to takes them a good part of the day.
